Principal’s Message Week 8 Term 3
Congratulations to everyone involved in last Friday’s Book Parade. This is always a highly anticipated
event on the Ben Venue calendar each year and involves months of preparation
by parents, staff and students. I must admit I always feel a little out of my comfort
zone at the parade but I especially felt uncomfortable as this year I conducted
enrolment interviews in my 101 Dalmations outfit! Needless to say the prospective
family were enthused by our sense of fun!
Student Safety
At the moment our playground has significant areas that are bare dirt. During the
periods of high winds this causes the playground to become very unpleasant for
everyone. Please be advised that outdoor lessons may be cancelled and
playground areas closed if we feel the area is too unsafe.
Casual Teacher Shortage
As you may be aware there is a shortage of casual teachers available in the
Armidale area. This means that on many occasions we have been unable to
replace teachers who are unwell. On some days we have had many teachers
away due to illness or professional learning. This means that we have had to split
classes and send students to other rooms to be supervised. I understand that this
is not ideal but unfortunately we do not always have an alternative solution.
Creative and Practical Arts Evening
Don’t forget the night begins with a BBQ from 5:30pm. Students involved in the
showcase must be in their allocated room by 6:15pm. The showcase will begin at
6:30pm. This is a wonderful event and fabulous opportunity to share with you all
the learning that has occurred in classrooms this year.
School Photos
We are aware that many students missed the opportunity to have their school
photos taken during the scheduled school photo days. We are currently
negotiating with Stephane to find a suitable alternative date. We will let you know when we have a
date.

Term 3 has been very busy and exciting in 1D.
In Mathematics we have been learning to read and record time to the half hour on analog and digital clocks.
Students have enjoyed participating in number talks, communicating a wide range of
strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems.
1D have been exploring the effects of push and pull forces in their everyday lives.
Students created boats out of foil to see which boat could hold the most weight without
sinking. They had a lot of fun working with some year 6 students to predict, measure and
record their results. We identified that the boats with a larger base held the most marbles
as the weight was spread out across the boat.
This semester we have been enthusiastically participating in drama. 1D have been looking
at how characters emotion is depicted through their facial expressions. While viewing the
book The Day the Crayons Quit written by Drew Daywalt students created freeze frames
displaying the various emotions each crayon is feeling.
Students have been completing the full writing process this term: finding facts, drafting a
report and publishing their reports using digital technologies.
A Dolphin is a mammal. Dolphins live in the ocean. A group of dolphins is called a
pod. Dolphins can eat over 20 fish at once. Dolphins are playful creatures.
Tom Snow
Horses are a mammal. A baby horse is called a foal. A horse that is medium size is
called a miniature pony. Horses can be all different sizes and breeds. Horses are
found in Armidale NSW. They are also found in America. Most horses live on farms.
‘Relax Me’ is something we feed a horse whenever it is nervous to go to a show. Chaff and pellets is a
horse’s dinner. Grass is afternoon tea. Horses like to be ridden. Horses are a kind animal. Pippi McClelland
I can’t believe we have passed the half-way point of the year. Students continue to strive towards achieving
their learning goals and are displaying greater independence in the classroom.

Dear school families, recently I have become very aware of people in our community who are homeless and
in need. A lot do not have enough warm clothes, blankets, and food to eat. This makes me very concerned.
To support these people, I was hoping that as a school we could donate items to help them. I have spoken to
both the Salvation Army and Vinnies and they need second-hand winter clothing, blankets or sleeping bags.
They also gratefully receive non-perishable food items including tinned food, rice and pasta.
We will be opening the canteen for the next 3 Friday mornings till the end of the term between 8:30am and
9:10am. If you are able to donate any of these items, please bring to the canteen during these times. The
dates are 13, 20, and 27 September. We will then make a donation to these charities on behalf of Ben Venue.
Thank you very much in advance for your generosity.
Items that might be difficult to bring in to school can be donated directly to The Salvation Army (open until
12:30pm Saturdays) at 100 Beardy St, or St Vincent de Paul (open until midday on Saturdays) at 162 Rusden
St.
Thank you for your support.

2L Term 3 is whizzing past and students have been flat out engaging in the wide range of opportunities available at Ben Venue. We loved our excursion to Thalgarrah earlier in the term, which set us up really well for our Geography unit about Indigenous Connection to Country. 2L also enjoyed our NAIDOC celebrations a couple of weeks ago. More recently, 2L have enjoyed seeing how fractions are a part of everyday life and can be used to do common things such as telling the time, baking our favourite recipes and dividing things into equal groups. Students have especially enjoyed learning some coding as part of our Digital Technologies learning, using online websites such as Turtle Academy and fantastic digital systems such as the Blockly app paired with fully programmable Dash-bots.
As if we haven't had enough fun, 2L had a great time dressing as our favourite book characters at last Friday's Book Parade.

5T have been working hard this term to finish off their Friendology units as part of the
URSTRONG Program. There have been opportunities for the students to practice their new
skills and I am proud of the maturity demonstrated.
Also this term, students have been working extremely hard on developing their informative
writing skills using the Seven Steps Program to produce some quality pieces on the highly
endangered Corroborree Frog.
Last week, I challenged the students to choreograph a dance routine for Sphero to the song
‘We Will Rock You’. It was a real test of perseverance and teamwork, but all students were
able to produce some block code which directed Sphero to move in time to the beat. It was
lots of fun!
At this time of the year, the students need pencil case supplies replenished as items begin to
wear out. Please check in with your child to see what they need.
