ONLY ONE SENIOR SIDE UNBEATENHOW. THE NEW TEAMS IN EACH SECTION

ARE FARIN GJan Howard

With one-third of the 1980 Season completed, Collegians is the only undefeatedSeuior team. Last Saturday saw the first loss for the other two who had won fivematches straight - De La Salle ( A Section) were beaten by St. Bernard's O.C. andSt. Pius (E Section) were beaten by Elsternwick .

Two Junior teams have not yet been defeated - Therry C.C.O.B . in JuniorT~\ o and Thomastown in Junior Three - and no less than six Reserve teams have\,:t to be conquered - Bulleen-Templestowe (C Reserve), St. Pius (E Reserve),U niversity Reds (F Reserve) and three teams in D Reserve : Old Carey Gram.,St. Bede's O.C. and Heatherton.

This point in the Season suggests itselfa good time to look at the position s

of the newcomers to the various sec-tions . After six matches some indication: s to form should be available .

In A Section, newcomers A.J.A .X .after a timely win last Saturday nowfind themselves just outside the four onpercentage - having won three matches .~farcellin, also winners last Saturdayhave not started so well with only two«ins recorded. They are currently occu-p~ ing eighth position on the ladder.

Kew have only lost one match so farto Old Xaverians) and are second ont11e B Section ladder ahead of OldScotch on percentage . It was, in fact,Kew who inflicted Old Scotch's onlydefeat . St . Kilda C.B .O .C. are lying sixthbut only five per cent . out of fourthplace. They have won three of their six1980 encounters, though their losses havebeen to the top three sides . OldParadians are not faring so well pre-sently have recording only one win -against Parkside in the opening match. It is only percentage which is holdingthem in eighth spot at the moment .

Bulleen-Templestowe are certainly do-ing the best of the four new sides inC Section . Their only defeat was at thebands of Geelong in the first match andhen the margin was only three points .

%I .H.S . Old Boys have won thre e

matches - all at home . Old Hailey-burians have won only two matches andOld Trinity Grammarians have recordedonly one win - that against Old Cam-berwell Grammarians - who are justabove them on percentage.

In D Section the new-comers arefairly well polarized. The two from CSection are in the four, the two up fromE Section are ninth and tenth . Alphing-ton have lost only one match (narrowlyto State Bank) and Old Ivanhoe havewon four of the six . Beverley Hills havewon one game (from Heatherton) whilstA.M.P. Society have yet to record theirfirst win .

St. Pius and West Brunswick are occu-pying the first two positions on theE Section ladder having lost one matcheach . Elsternwick (last week's "giant-killers") are fifth on percentage withtwo losses recorded - to West andNorth Brunswick . Princes Hill are find-ing it a little more difficult . at this stagehaving won only two matches.

The five new teams in F Section areenjoying mixed successes. Thomastownwith five wins and one "error" are ontop with Peninsula Old Boys (4 wins)in third spot . Coolaroo Rovers have twowins whilst Banyule and St . John's areeach showing four points .

Coburg have won three matches inJunior Section One, whilst Kew have ye t

to break through .' They are seventh andTespect i~ ci~"• 'ninth

- Bulken_T-xptestowe have won fourmatches in Junior Section Two as haveMonash>Blues and are holding third andfourth places on the ladder. Marcellinhave, won three whilst Old ScotchCollegians have managed only two wins .

In Junior Section Three the five newsides are well spread through theladder. Thomastown are undefeated, St .Kilda C.B .O.C. have lost only once -,to St. Kevin's who are fifth on per-centage with four wins . Parkside havewon three games whilst St. Bernard's(B) have yet to notch opening points.

PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAM ESA SECTIO N

After selecting five winners in the openinground for 1980, 1 have slowly gone down-hill

to ❑ n all-time low last week with two winners .La Salle have tasted defeat - to an up

P and nally comin

g Put it St. together. and Marcellin

finall y t veDe La Salle O.C . are at home to North O.B .

De La's shock defeat last week will certainlyb ;ve Gavin White some coaching ammunitiontor his boys this week . The bubble had toburst at some stage, but a defeat can be a nss9t and today we will see De La Salle back

on the straight and narrow. North O .B. arejabouring each week although Griffin, Malone, and Maguire have been doing their bit. TheirLig game will have to to move a good dealquicker if they are to hold out the fasteropposition . the La Salle to win .

AJAX venture to University Blacks today.slacks showed a more solid accomplishmentlast week and finally showed that they cando it . Christie and Chapman have put someload consistent games together and withthese two doing well and the side lifting as❑ whole they are certainly going to be hardia beat . AJAX showed O .M .'s what pressureis last week, but they generate this down attheir home ground . Away from Oval 2 theyseem to be a little tamer and for this reasonthis game will be very close . AJAX howeverwith their quicker movements to just win theirfirst away game for 1980 .

Two solid winners last week meet todayat Bulleen . Marceliln O .C. take on St . Ber-nard's O .C . Marcellin will be looking to followon from last week's good win against Ormon d

t Ormond . Crimmins and Aloisio showedwhat had to be done, and along with whatthe whole Marcellin side has been threateningto do for some time - they have put ittogether . St . Bernard's are now the giant-killers after last week's great win againstthe La Salle . They have now strung threewins in a row together and I think that theyhave fought too hard to let the fourth slip .in a hard fought game St. Bernard's to scrapehome .

Ivanhoe play host to Ormond this afternoon .Ivanhoe are not enjoying the best of seasonsbut today on their home ground and with theopposition taken aback after two successivedefeats, this may be the day if Morcom andBaker can show them the way . Ormond, onthe other hand, are shocked at the last twoweek's results and coach Peter Murphy willbe out to make amends before any more"rot" sets in . The Monds will have to showmore fighting qualities if they are not to letthe Hoes' have their first win for the season .Ormond to win, but there could easily be asurprise result here !

At "Headquarters" this afternoon, Old Mel-burnians play University Blues. ElsternwickPark has been the venue for their last two

encounters, with the score being one all .O.M .'s were given a!esson last week inhow to get the ball and unless you have itall the talent in the world goes wanting . Uni .Blues have many good players and over thelast four weeks have had two-thirds of theirside in the best players. This makes thema talented team with many winners such asDavies and Wood all around the ground. TheO .M .'s could make this a great game if theydecide to work hard, but I feel the Blueswill take the score to 2-1 .

Selections: De La Salle O .C., AJAX, St .Bernard's, Ormond, University ®Iues . - PETERROBERSON .

B SECTIO NA perfect score last week has steered your

intrepid tipster clear of relegation territorywithin whose bounds 'Plastics Man' Nathanand the cosmopolitan Willy Pickham now liesecurely.

The top game today sees Kew visit Collegians, with the knowledge victory will take them tothe top of the ladder. Kew's strength aroundaround the ground will stand the side in goodstead today . Walker, Hayes, Smith and RoccoZerbi have repeatedly given Kew first use ofthe ball around the ground. Their Collegian'scounter parts must stop these moves if theLions are to win . McColl and his fellow Kewdefenders must limit the opportunities ofParsons, Hibbins and Bennett each of whomhas been an effective Collegian's forward . Asboth of these sides are potential finalistsvictory today, will serve as a great phycho-logical boost . I believe Kew will emerge vic-torious largely because their "never say die"attitude will enable them to persevere andbreak down the Collegian's spirit .

Long standing rivals and former footballneighbours Old Paradians and Old Scotchmeet at Bundoora . Paradians, who are havinga dismal season, face a determined Scotchwho will be mindful victory will strengthentheir double chance prospects . Paradiansgood players have been hard to find recentlyso my reporters tell me - Paul Johnston, ona wing, and Michael McCarthy roving, havedone well despite limited opportunities Scotchhave only nominated a total of fourteen playersas their best during the first five rounds. Thisindicates to me that Laurie Aghan has hischarges playing a consistent team game inwhich all members contribute . Today Scotchveteran Ross Duke will be all out to showhis former teamates at Parade that age hasnot dimmed his form . Old Scotch should winthis game comfortably.

In what could prove a vital game in thefinal relegation analysis Monash Blues visitParkside . Monash have played some goodfootball of late but have only managed onevictory . Olds, McKenzie and Ludeman regularlyhave been good players while Rodger hasproven a regular goal scorer . Parkside have

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - May 24, 1980 Page 5

PREVIEWS (cont.)no such reliable Spearhead . The 'Red Devils'have named eighteen individual players amongtheir weekly Best - the equal highest numberin B Section, only Chilcott and Jones haveregularly been named among the Best Players .Monash will take the points providing theyconcentrate on the game and don't think theresult is a formality .

As Fawkner meet Caulfield Grammarians atHome their winning Chances arise sharply .

The "Blues" double standard must giv enightmares to Dennis Groves. Today Chard andWard will need close checking by Caulfielddefenders . Bob Macdonald will have a worry-ing afternoon trying to stop this pair bootingtheir side to victory . Surprisingly Fawkner hasnamed eighteen separate Best Players . Thismust indicate the team's lack of individualstars. Caulfield see victory today as theirmeans of regaining the top four. Their leadingplayers Watson, Cooney and Griffiths couldwell prove the architects of victory . Goalscoring for Caulfield will be a worry althoughKanis, Fletcher and Matthews are all provenand reliable avenues to goal . At home Fawknerare my selection .

C .B .C . St. Kilda, with a splendid away fromhome record this season, visit. Old Xaverians .The St. Kilda side has won on the groundbefore (1977) . Victory today could carry eitherSide into the Four. For Xaverians,, Ace Ruck-men Noonan and Brimacombe will vie for aerialsupremacy with St. Kilda Stalwart "Ox" White .Vale and Curtain will present two big problemsto St . Kilda defenders and if not closelychecked they could kick the "Red and Blacks"to victory . St . Kilda's consistent players in-clude "Dino" Dynon, Kellaway and Delaney-The key to this game may well be that theSaints have no reliable goalkicker to comparewith the Xaverians Duo . To forecast the out-come is a real gamble - at home I selectOld Xaverlans to win narrowly.

Selections : Kew, Old Scotch, Monash Blues,Fawkner, Old Xaverians .-NORM NUGENT .

C SECTIO NMy decision to select some roughies last

week now that the tracks are becoming heavywas certainly incorrect and today we willbase our selections on form, being one thirdof the way into the season .

Bulleen-Templestowe are now to be recog-nised as a force in this section . When oldtimers like Quaiffe appear in the leading goal-kickers they must have a nice blending ofexperience and youth . They should relish thethought of experimenting against the visitingOld Trinity Grammarians as they race away toan easy victory.

Hampton Rovers made mince meat of Gee-long last week and should have no troublein accounting for St. Kevin's O .B . when theytravel to Como Park . While Craig McPhersonwas leading goal kicker for the Rovers lastyear he has been eclipsed by Spurell thisseason who can expect another bagfull today .

Possibly the hardest game to make a selec-tion in is Old Haifeyburlans at home to OldCamberwell Grammarians . The visitors wer e

Page 6

thrashed by the B-T's last weak while Hailey, bury to some extent kicked the game ay,ayI guess Don McQueen has provided more Ofthose VAFA Insurances posters to Haifeyburythan any other side and this would be enoughto fire any team to victory .

M .H .S .O .B. are maintaining contact with thefour but they will be in trouble when theytravel south to play Old Brighton Grammarians.Although captain Geoff Delaney will be tryingto lift his side all round the ground by per-sonal example he will find that the home sidejust has too many good players.

The question being asked around Corio Bayis whether the Geelong side has collapsedwith two successive defeats. Today they awaitthe arrival of their long standing friends andrivals Coburg. The verbal battle off the fieldamongst Messrs. Fidge, Middling and McGeechywill be every bit as entertaining as the gameon the field . Coburg are just the side tocarve up a team that has dropped its bundle .Nevertheless I feel the Geelong side will steady,re-think their game and come out winners .

Selections: - Bulfeen-Tempfestowe, Hampton,Old Haifeyburians, Old Brighton, Geetong .~PETER NATHAN .

D SECTIO N

Last Saturday Alphington retained top spoton the ladder with a good win over St . Bede's,whilst State Bank just hung on for a onepoint win over Heatherton .

Today there are some real cut-throat games, with a position in the form to the victors, and for the losers, a week's wait and anothertry next week.

In selecting a winner in the game betweenState Bank and Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, Ithink a toss of the coin is the best way.State Bank are the only side to defeat Alphing-ton, but their only losses were caused bylast quarter lapses . Old Ivanhoe after losingthe first game to Heatherton, have lost onlyone other game, and that was by one pointto Power House . Even though State Bank havethe home ground advantage, I think that thiswill be a tight game all day, and that OldIvanhoe's strong finish in the last quarter willgive them victory.

St. Bede's have the chance to regain thesecond position on the ladder they lost lastweek by de defeating Old Carey Grammarianstoday . St. Bede's were not at all disgracedagainst Alphington, and they will be out toget back on their winning way. Old Careywere defeated by the last pick of the daythe previous week against Alphington, but theymade up for this loss by completely shuttingCountry Colleges out of the game last week .I think that Old Carey, with the home groundadvantage, will be still in second place onthe ladder at the final bell .

Heatherton make the journey north to visittop side Alphington and they will be tryingto notch up a win after two successive fosses. They came home strongly against State Banklast week, but if they are to win today theycannot affort to give Alphington a start.Alphington have shown that they are capableof scoring a run of goals at any stage ofthe game, and I think that this ability wil l

; " 'hoe too strong last week, but they are backtheir home ground where they defeated

'{eatherton two weeks ago . Power House havecorded some good wins this year, but losses

3 occurred because of lapses at vital stages,f games . I think Power House has too much;t stake to lose this game today .

A.M.P. Society have shown an improvementform over the past two weeks, and this was

a ;ident last week, when apart from letting?ower House get a winning break in the third❑ uarter'they put up a good effort . Their op-ronents, Count ry Colleges, put in a really bad, iame against Old Carey last Saturday, after

owing the game away the previous week, gninst Power House . This is a crucial gamefor both sides, and desperation rather thans'' :ill could be the winning factor . I thinkCountry Colleges will be the more desperateside today.

E SECTIO N

Knowing I would be out of town last weekmy emergency tipster Peter Lemon did theiob for me, and in the past I have admiredhis tipping ability, but with only a score of15 I am moving nearer than ever to thewooden spoon .

Big surprises as each end of the ladderunbeaten St . Pius could not handle Elstern-wick on their home ground, (who can whenyou look at their home record this year.)A .N .Z . with only a seven point loss two weeksago nearly managed their first victory, andfollowed up fast week with a ten point win .

St. Pius will be smarting over last week'sloss and A.N .Z. will be out to prove theycan give an account of themselves but Ithink the task will be too great and St . Piuswill win .

North Brunswick should be too strong forBulleen United but it makes it difficult to predictwhen they fail to a low team. I will givethem the home ground advantage to win.Mentone back on the winning list again

should be too strong for U .H .S .O .B ., but itwon't be a runaway victory .

Princes Hill have been consistent last twoweeks. A good win over Old Geelong anda close runner-up to Mentone last Saturdayat Mentone . They will have the advantage ofhome ground and could be too strong forLathrobe .

Elsternwick appear the better side, but theiraway games have not been good . if theyfollow on the good work of last week theywill get the points at Thornbury.

Old Geelong seem to fall in a heap whengo away from Como and unless they can

overcome this weakness they will be beatenby West Brunswick.

Selections : St . Pius, North Brunswick, Men-tone, Princes Hill, Elsternwick, West Brunswick.- NUGGET STEPHENS.

F SECTIONBrunswick v St. John's

Brunswick went down to Uni Reds but notby much and St . John's had the pleasure ofopening their account at Clayton's expenseand prevented my hopes of another perfectday, I share St. John's pleasure in their winbut doubt if they can repeat it this week .

Clayton v Thomastown . After pulling in aheap last week, it would require a miracle forClayton to get up against the Northern Terrors .

Footscray I .T . v Common . Bank should bea good match . The Bankers went for thedoctor last week and picked up points andpercentage but the Fillies at home will bea vastly different proposition .

Monash Whites v Banyule will be a battleof the lesser lights and I expect Banyule toregister their first victory of the season . Iknow they have four points on the boardbut other clubs bookkeeping errors do notoccur often enough for lesser lights to makethe four .

Therry v Reds at Oak Park should be aclose tussle with the visitors a bit in front atthe finish . Reds have a spearhead kickinggoals each week whilst Therry seem to relyon their Chinaman "Sum Wun" to do thescoring which could be the difference .

Coolaroo v Peninsula O .B. Coolaroo didn'tderive much joy from visiting their neighbourslast week and unless they improve out ofsight they won't get any real pleasure out ofthis week's clash with the P .O .B .'s .Selections: Brunswick, Thomastown, F.I .T .Banyule, Uni . Reds, Peninsula O .B.'s - SYDWHITFIELD .

JUNIOR SECTION 1

Last week's round produced another big up-set with the defeat of Old Haileyburians thenthe division leaders by De LaSalle .

St. Bernard's returned to winning form, while Melbourne University and North OldBoys consolidated their place in the Four withgood wins . The thriller of the round wasCoburg's four point win over Ivanhoe justpreventing the "Hoes" from notching theirfirst win .

This week we have Ormond facing Ivanhoeat home. Ormond showed woeful form lastSaturday whilst Ivanhoe have been improvingevery week . I am sure this will be a toughand close game and although my heart iswith the underdogs I'll give the Ormondbrain's trust a chance to pull this one outat home . A great improvement will have tobe shown by the "Monds" and an upset isa real possibility.

Coburg versus North Old Boys on their ownpitch and their form has been good in recentweeks . Their confidence is high and will giveNorth Old Boys stiff opposition but I believeNorth Old Boys desperation to remain in thetop four will carry them through to a win.

PREVIEWS (cont. )The highlight of the season to date should

be the match between St . Bernard's and OldHaileyburians. These two top teams havesuffered reverses in recent weeks and thishas brought them back to earth .

St. Bernard's bounced back after their defeatby Coburg and "Old Hails" will be lookingto do the same this week . I am tipping St .Bernard's greater tenacity to get them thefour points .

Kew vie with De La Salle at Kew's ground.Kew have yet to gain four points despitesome good performances because they havenot been able to put it together for 4 quarters .De La Salle on the other hand are cock-a-hoopafter last week's win against the divisionsleaders . De La Salle will be keen to get intothe Four and are sure to make every post awinner and I'm confident they will win today .

Hampton Rovers after two good wins foundthe going tougher last Saturday. MelbourneUniversity on the other hand showed a returnto form last week with a good win . The Uni .side know they can't afford to lose a matchat this stage because the competition forfourth position is so intense .

I think the Uni's high marking game willbe too much for Hampton Rovers today .

Selections : Ormond, No rth Old Boys, St .Bernard's, De La Salle and Melbourne Univer-sity. - M. J . ARNOLD .

JUNIOR SECTION 2

Your correspondent has had many thingsgoing against him in this section in recentweeks, like form reversals, improvers but themanagement decided to make things even moredifficult by redrawing the fixture in this section .Despite this, last week's score was the maxi-mum so I'il expect another redraw soon(courtesy of John Adams) to confuse us all .

Last week's perfect score also elevated meto second place so I guess it won't be longbefore I'll again show these fellows a cleanpair of heels .

First things first . Another five winnersshould help today .

West Brunswick and Therry at Royal Park. This should result in a comfortable win forthe visitors who even at this early stage mustbe the side to beat for the premiership .

Marceltin are at home to the big improversfrom Bulleen-Templestowe . The home side'srecent form has been a little topsy-turvy withsome big losses and some not very impressivewins . Their biggest disappointment was againstO .P" which makes me think they may be onlyan ordinary combination . B-T, however, havegone on with the job after a slow start andseem to keep improving week by week . Thevisitors to win .

M .H .S .O .B . and Old Scotch could be a trickyaffair. Old Scotch have been somewhat of anenigma but won well enough last week againstCaulfield Grams . Old Scotch though seem tobe better suited when they play the 'Old boynetwork' so I'll tip them today .

Old Paradians certainly found their weak-nesses out last week when they suffered their

Page 8

first loss at Oak Park. I feel this will makethem all the more determined to recover theirlost prestige (and hold second place) so Ifeel sorry for Monash today .

The final encounter for comment is down atAlbert Park No . 3, when the home side, Carfield Grams, take on Fawkner . The home sidehave continued to disappoint and find it hardto salute the judge . The visitors, on the otherhand, seem to have improved of late andshould be suited by the small ground . Fawknerfor mine .

Selections : Therry, Bulleen-Templestowe, OldScotch, Old Paradians, Fawkner. -- RONHANCOX .

JUNIOR SECTION 3Both Heatherton and Old Brighton Gram-

marians were defeated last Saturday so today'smatch takes on even greater significance forboth . Old Brighton have been performing thebetter of the two and should bounce backwith a vengeance today.

St . Kilda moved into second spot last weekfollowing their win over Old Brighton andat home today they should prove too strongfor St. Pius .

After their defeat last Saturday, St . Kevin'sOld Boys now find themselves out of the four.Their visit to Old Ivanhoe Grammarians todayis most important - to both sides . The homeside only managed a three goal win againstSt . Bernard's last week and wiif find St.Kevin's a much tougher proposition . Thevisitors should be able to avenge last week'sdefeat today .

Banyule and Parkside both had impressivewins last Saturday, and the home side shouldwin again today . Their position in the fouris at stake and I don't think they will surrenderit easily.

Thomastown continue to sweep all beforethem and their "victim" today will be Clayton, who despite their first win last week will beno match for the section leader.

Power House have another chance to "breakthe ice" today when they welcome St. Ber-nard's (B) . Both teams feel the effects ofschool holidays but Power House seem tobe suffering more. St. Bernard's have beenimproving steadily and should be able tocapitalize today .

Selections : Old Brighton Gram ., St. KildaC .B .O.C ., St. Kevin's O.B ., Banyule, Thomas-town, St. Bernard's (B) - RAY IRVING.

BALL BRIEF2nd TON TO OLD BRIGHTON VETERAN

The Old Brighton Grammarians F .C. con-gratulates Reserves v.c . Barry Gartner, whotoday plays his 100th game for the Club . Thisachievement in itself is noteworthy indeed, butwhen you consider that Old Brighton is thesecond Club with which Barry has performedthis feat and that in fact today's game ishis 222nd amateur match, then this milestoneassumes considerably more significant propor-ticns .

Yet despite this mammoth number ofgames, Barry still trains twice a week, stillgoes for 100 minutes every game, still yellsencouragement to his fellow players, and giventhe fact that he recently purchased a newpair of football boots, one suspects thathe has no intention of changing and thatthe big 300 may not be beyond him. Con-gratulations, Barry !

BALL BRIEF S100 GAMES TO O .M. FULL-BACK

Rick Pisarski played his 100th game fo rthe Old Melburnians last week, Rickjoined the Club in 1974 and has playedevery game with the Firsts. The 'Pole' hasrepresented his State and last year gainedthe great honour of being selected to playwith the All Australian Team. Known forhis ability to mark anything that comes hisway and a prodigous kick, the 'Pole' Isalso known to have a wager or two - afew happy people can vouch for that . Heis a very popular member of the Club andwe all congratulate him on achieving thishonour .

Geoff Frankish has now played 50 gamesfor Caulfield Grammarians and all at theClub congratulate him on having reachedthis first milestone . Coming to us fromSydney three seasons ago, he soon forcedhis way into the Reserves as a utility player;finally settling down this season at Centre-half-back . Geoff is a solidly built, determined, straight ahead footballer with a generallysafe pair of hands and this style of playhas on odd occasions earned for him gameswith the Seniors. His quiet friendly mannergoes down well with both team mates andmembers and for this reason alone we hopeto retain his services not only as a playerbut later on as a potential Office Bearer ofthe Club .

All at Old Carey congratulate Mick Rooneyon playing his 50th game last week. Mickhas shown his legs are young and his goalkicking as good as ever . Keep up the goodwork and go flat out for your 100th, Mick.
