countries – Canada, New Zealand and Japan!

About Race Across USA

According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled

in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. At

the present time, 12.5 million children, ages 6-19 in the United States

are obese. Many more are overweight.

Starting January 16, 2015, an international team of athletes will

begin a 4 1/2 month journey, running the equivalent of 117 back-to-

back marathons across the United States with the goal of sparking a

renaissance in childhood health and fitness. Runners will run stages

that are approximately 26.2 miles (a marathon) long and

participate in expos with students and the local community to get

the word out.

The event will start in Huntington Beach, California and pass through Arizona, New

Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina,

North Carolina, Virginia and finally Washington D.C. On June 2, the runners will finish

the day at the White House in Washington D.C. The coast-to-coast running distance

will be 3,080 miles.

Welcome to Virginia, the 12th state on the Race Across USA route.

Virginia, officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a U.S. state located in the South

Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to

its status as a former dominion of the English Crown, and “Mother of Presidents”

because more U.S. presidents have been born there than in any other state.

Virginia’s eight presidents are:

George Washington,1st President of the United States

The 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson

The 4th President, James Madison;

The 5th President, James Monroe

The 9th President, William Henry Harrison

The 10th President, John Tyler

The 12 President, Zachary Taylor

Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President.

Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe were among the Founding

Fathers of the United States,

Virginia has a total area of 42,774 square miles, including 3,180 square miles of water,

making it the 35th largest state by area. Virginia is bordered by Maryland and

Washington, D.C. to the north and east; by the Atlantic Ocean to the east; by North

Carolina and Tennessee to the south; by Kentucky to the west; and by West Virginia

to the north and west.

The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge

Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Many of Virginia's rivers flow into the

Chesapeake Bay, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James.

Forests cover 65% of the state, primarily with deciduous, broad leaf trees.

The population of the Commonwealth is over 8.2 million.

Several European expeditions, including a group of Spanish Jesuits, explored the

Chesapeake Bay during the 16th century. In 1583, Queen Elizabeth I of England

granted Walter Raleigh a charter to plant a colony north of Spanish Florida. In 1584,

Raleigh sent an expedition to the Atlantic coast of North America. The London

Company was granted land rights to this area and financed the first permanent

English settlement in the “New World”, Jamestown. Named for King James I, it was

founded in 1607 by Christopher Newport.

Jamestown 2007 marked the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the

Jamestown Colony. That year Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and her

husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited Virginia during a state visit to the

United States. Queen Elizabeth is not only a direct descendant of James I of

England, the settlement's namesake, but also the direct descendant of George III of

Page 4: BENEFITING - Race Across the USA · Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Many of Virginia's rivers flow into the Chesapeake Bay, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James

the United Kingdom, under whose reign Great Britain lost the same territory in the

American War of Independence.

Virginians have played a prominent role in the shaping of the nation. In 1776,

Virginia declared independence from the British Empire and adopted George

Mason's Virginia Declaration of Rights, which was then included in a new

constitution. Another Virginian, Thomas Jefferson, drew upon Mason's work in

drafting the national Declaration of Independence. James Madison, who became

the 4th President of the United States, is hailed as the “Father of the Constitution” for

being instrumental in the drafting of the United States Constitution in 1787and as the

key champion and author of the United States Bill of Rights in 1789.

The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous law-making body in the New

World.

Virginia's economy has many sectors: agriculture in the Shenandoah Valley and

federal agencies in Northern Virginia, including the headquarters of the Department

of Defense and CIA.

Virginia Beach is the most populous city in Virginia with a population of around

438,000. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond which was founded in 1737.

The city now has a population of about 204,000. During the American Civil War,

Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America.

The city is home to many monuments and memorials, most notably those along

Monument Avenue. The first monument, a statue of Robert E. Lee, was erected in

1890. The avenue also houses a statue commemorating Arthur Ashe, an African

American, who was the first black player selected to the United States Davis Cup

team and the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the US

Open, and the Australian Open. In 1993, Ashe was posthumously awarded the

Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton.

Virginia’s best known landmarks include: Monticello, designed by President Thomas

Jefferson based on the neoclassical principles described in the books of the Italian

Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio; and The University of Virginia, also

conceived and designed by President Thomas Jefferson, and established in 1819.

In 1987 Monticello and the University of Virginia were together designated a UNESCO

World Heritage Site.

Congratulations! You’ve reached Washington D.C., the final stage on the Race

Across USA route and a truly fitting place to complete this epic race.

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as

Washington, “the District”, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States and one

of the most photographed and recognizable cities on the planet.

Pennsylvania Avenue, which connects the White House to the United States Capitol,

is called “America's Main Street”.

The signing of the Residence Act in 1790 approved the creation of a capital district

located along the Potomac River on the country's east coast. The U.S. Constitution

provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and

the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state. The federal district was named

Columbia, which was a poetic name for the United States in use at that time.

The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district.

Named in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States and

one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, the City of Washington was

founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the

land originally ceded by Virginia.

President Washington commissioned Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French-born architect

and city planner, to design the new capital and his plan was based on cities such as

Paris, Amsterdam, Karlsruhe, and Milan.

Washington, D.C., has an estimated resident population of around 647,000. If the

District was a state it would rank 49th in population, ahead of Vermont and

Wyoming.

The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are

in the District, including the Congress, the President, and Supreme Court. Congress

held its first session in Washington in 1800.

Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are

primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign

embassies, many of which are on a section of Massachusetts Avenue informally

known as Embassy Row, as well as the headquarters of many international

organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The federal government accounts for about 29% of the jobs in Washington, D.C.

Millions of visitors flock to the capital each year making tourism Washington's second

largest industry.

Six of the top 10 buildings in the American Institute of Architects' 2007 ranking of

"America's Favorite Architecture" are in the District of Columbia:

The White House, the official residence and principal workplace of every

President of the United States since John Adams in 1800

Page 6: BENEFITING - Race Across the USA · Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Many of Virginia's rivers flow into the Chesapeake Bay, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James

The Washington National Cathedral, the second largest in the United States,

after the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and the highest

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, an

American Founding Father and the third President of the United States

The United States Capitol, the meeting place of the U.S. Congress, the

bicameral legislature of the U.S. federal government consisting of two houses:

the lower house known as the House of Representatives and the upper house

known as the Senate

The Lincoln Memorial, built to honor the 16th President of the United States,

Abraham Lincoln is consistently ranked both by scholars and the public as

one of the greatest U.S. presidents

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial which honors members of the U.S. armed

forces that fought in the Vietnam War.

The National Mall is a large, open park between the Lincoln Memorial and the

United States Capitol featuring the Washington Monument, the tallest structure in

Washington, the Jefferson Pier, marking the second prime meridian of the United

States and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The Mall receives approximately 24

million visitors each year and is the location of presidential inaugurations.

Nearby is the Tidal Basin which features rows of Japanese cherry blossom trees,

gifted by the nation of Japan, as well as the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the

George Mason Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

The National Archives houses many important American documents, including the

Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

On Capitol Hill is the Library of Congress, the largest library complex in the world with

a collection of over 147 million books, manuscripts, and other materials.

Most of the nation's official museums and galleries in Washington, D.C. are

maintained by the Smithsonian Institution created by Congress in 1846. The

Smithsonian's locations have about 30 million visits each year. The National Museum

of Natural History is the most visited museum in North America.
