RTE quota students atGoodwill Girls High School inFraser Town have been payingfees every year ever since theyjoined the school. A parent,whose daughter is in class 3,said the school had been col-lecting the fees right from class1. “In class 1, the school collect-ed about Rs 2,000 and in theclass2,aboutRs5,000.Inclass3, it hiked the fees to about Rs6,000.Ifwedonotprotestnow,it will go on increasing the feesnext year and the year afterthat,” said the parent, who re-fused to be named, fearing ac-

Speaking to Deccan Herald,Vani, the headmistress of theschool,said:“Wearenotcharg-ing any tuition fees for thesestudents. The amount beingcollected is meant for books

and uniform. In any case, thegovernmenthasn’t reimbursedus for admitting students un-der the RTE quota for the lasttwo years.” The State govern-ment pays Rs 11,848 for eachstudent in class 1 and Rs 5,924forthoseinthepre-school level.Anumberofschools havecom-plained about the delay in re-imbursement.

In a programme aimed atspreading the spirit of adven-ture, climbers Captain Man-mohan Singh Kohli, SonamWangyal, G S Bhangu and DrMulk Raj were felicitated by HS Chauhan, president of IndianMountaineering Foundation(IMF), and Dr N NagambikaDevi, principal secretary,DYES, here.

Going down memory lane,the four climbers shared theirexperience.

“I am an ordinary person.My life story simply proves thatevery human being can scalethe highest peaks of achieve-ment in his or her chosen field.Nooneisborngreat.Onlychal-lenges make one so. I am aproduct of supreme chal-lenges,” said Captain Kohli.

“To achieve, we need co-op-eration and not competition.An individual can’t climb amountain alone; what is need-ed is team work and team spir-

it. It is ‘we’ and not ‘I’. We canachieve wonders with teamspirit and enjoy the feeling ofadventure,” said Dr Mulk Raj.

Chauhan spoke about theimportance of adventure and

disaster management. He en-couraged theyouth totakepartin mountain expeditions. Healso spoke about the opportu-nities and courses offered bythe IMF.

Confirmingit toDeccanHer-ald, the MLA said he receiveda call from a person identifyinghimselfasRaviPoojaryat12.30pm, demanding Rs 10 crore.

The caller spoke in Tulu. Af-ter the first call, he called theMLAthrice.Later, theMLAin-formedUdupiSPKAnnamalai,who in turn asked the MLA toseek police protection.

The MLA is yet to decide onseeking police protection.
