Brisbane Strategic Transport Model (BSTM) Model Improvement Program
Overview
AITPM National Conference Adelaide, South Australia
12 – 15 August, 2014
AITPM Transport Modelling Seminar 22 May 2013
BSTM Model Improvement Program – What is it?
• A medium term program of works to improve modelling products and processes in all their aspects
•A joint program with Brisbane City Council (BCC) for a single BSTM model (now 2 versions) with TMR as the model owner
•This program will provide significant improvements to both TMR and BCC model processes and practices
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Where is it?
SEQSTMBSTM-MM
(BNE)
•Southeast Queensland:
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Why is this being done?
• Existing models aging – some components go back pre-2001
• Last significant update was about 2008 – upgrade to full multi-modal capability
• 2011 Review and Audit Recommendations (TMR and BCC joint)
• Questions asked of models increasing in complexity and detail
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – When will this Program happen?
• Program of works started in earnest at the end of 2012
• Program is expected to run to mid 2015 depending on resources
• The program is designed to balance product quality and product delivery
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – How will this project happen?
• Improvements were identified through:
- BSTM-MM Experience
- The Review and Audit
- Local/International experience
• Works are separated into task componentsto manage work streams and provide contractor opportunities
• TMR contract out most components (subject to funding)
• Timelines dependant on resourcing
• A Program of works was developed from identified improvements
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Key Elements of the Program
• Governance and Control
• Quick Wins
•Performance Fundamentals
•Additional Functionality
•Design Fundamentals
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Governance and Control
•Meso (SATURN) Modelling Guidelines and Criteria (Complete)
• Ownership - Responsible custodians of transport modelling for the State.
• Consistency – Evaluate & compare across projects in a robust consistent way
•Macro Modelling Guidelines and Criteria (progressing)
•Efficiency – How we do our work with fewer resources
Tools & techniques can provide options assessment and consistency
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Quick wins
• Python Scripting
– reduces run times
•Meso (SATURN) Modelling Guidelines and Criteria
– consistency in SATURN coding, methodology and outputs
– improve ability to compare projects from differing models
•Standard Outputs
– Based on Reporting Sectors
– Suite of matrix and link based model output values
(avg. O-D speed, distance, vht, vkt)
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Design Fundamentals – Zone Revision
• Consistent to ABS SA1 geography
• Model boundaries consistent to LGA boundaries
• Increased zone detail in green field areas
• Increased zone consistency (population, trip productions, homogeneity (land use))
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Design Fundamentals – Zone Revision
Zone numbers standardised by District – DDxxRegular nodes consistent to zones by ‘District’
DDxxx
– Refine connectivity (arterial connections / through-connections)
– Separate PT walk accessfrom other access (green versus pink)
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Design Fundamentals – Network Build
– Existing Consistent to as built (SDRN, aerial photo, plans)
– Link bendiness
– Efficient Link-based intersection delay
– Future Consistent to design standards(transport & town planning)
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Design Fundamentals – Network Build
– Single 2-way vs. separate 1-way links on divided facilities
– Remove intermediate nodes – efficiency
– Maximise network consistency 2036 to 2011
– Standardise node numbering by districts
AITPM National Conference, Adelaide, SA 12 – 15 August 2014
BSTM Model Improvement Program – Design Fundamentals – Time Period Refinement
– Facilitates implementing peak spreading
