OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

900 EAST WASHINGTON STREET OFFICE: (336) 517-2225

August 2018

Greetings, members of the Bennett College Class of 2022! I am Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, the 18th President of

Bennett College, and on behalf of the Board of Trustees, our Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumnae, let me congratulate

you for making a very wise choice to attend Bennett College. You certainly could have chosen another institution of

higher learning, but I am delighted that you chose Bennett College, where we empower women to become leaders,

analytical thinkers and excellent communicators.

As you will quickly realize, Bennett offers everything you need to mature into

competent, confident and committed women to social justice. We also

encourage you to step outside the box. Although you may not have traveled far

from your hometowns, Bennett affords the opportunity to visit countries you

have seen only on maps. During my presidency, I have traveled with students to

South Korea, South Africa and South America – all of whom returned with a

deeper appreciation and respect for other cultures.

As one of only two all-female HBCUs in the country, Bennett is already unique.

However, what truly distinguishes Bennett above all else is the sisterhood that

permeates our campus, as Bennett women bond like no other. In the most recent

Belle Ringer, an annual Alumnae publication, there is a story about four women

who returned to campus in the fall of 2017 for a reunion – 50 years after they

initially became friends during their Freshwoman year! You, too, can establish

close bonds with other women now that you are a Bennett Belle.

My Leadership Team, the Faculty, Staff, current Belles, Alumnae and I are so

excited that you have joined us this academic year! If there is anything we can

do to help ensure your first semester as a Bennett College student gets off to a

fantastic start, please don’t hesitate to ask for help.

And again, welcome to Bennett College!

Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, Ph.D.

President

Welcome Bennett Belles Class of 2022,

The Division of Student Affairs is excited to welcome you into the Bennett

College family. As you embark on this exciting journey, we have prepared a

series of programs and events to help you better acclimate to the Bennett College

way of life. The primary goals of the Division of Student Affairs are to support

the success of all students through an environment that encourages the

development of the whole student, intellectually, culturally, socially, and

spiritually. As educators, we assist students in developing the life skills (integrity,

civic and social responsibility, self-respect, trust, and accountability) necessary to

make effective and informed choices, promoting their well-being and preparing

them for life beyond the college experience. The Division acknowledges the

worth and value of all persons and strives to strengthen community through

diversity.

As the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, I oversee the following five departments on campus: Campus

Life/Residential Life, Career Services, Civic Engagement & Leadership, Counseling Services/Health Services, and

Religious Life/ ACES. When you connect with us, you will have the opportunity to explore how to become involved in

programs and initiatives to help you become a successful Bennett Belle.

Over the next few months, you will begin to learn what it means to be a Bennett Belle. Your introduction to Bennett Life

will begin during Welcome Week. The theme for Welcome Week this year is “Drippin iN Succe22,” because we have no

doubt that each of you will be successful while at Bennett. You are required to attend all Welcome Week events as each

program is selected to help in your transition to Bennett, and are opportunities to get to know your Bennett sisters. Your

involvement and engagement matters as it will shape your four years at Bennett. I expect each of you to step outside

your comfort zone and seek out different opportunities, such as: internships, study abroad, start or join a student

organization, organize a community service project and more. We are here to help you succeed.

This year you will play an integral role in Bennett’s re-launch of Living Learning Communities. Each residence hall will

have a specific theme where you will work with faculty, staff and students on programs and activities on the theme

associated with the residence hall that you live in. Your participation throughout the year will be a critical component to

the success of the living learning communities.

I am looking forward to connecting with all of you and sharing in the many successes you will have as a Bennett Belle.

Lorraine D. Acker, Ph.D.

Associate Vice President of Student Affairs

About Bennett History

In 1873, Bennett College had its beginning in the unplastered basement of the Warnersville Methodist

Episcopal Church (now known as St. Matthews United Methodist Church). Seventy young men and women

started elementary and secondary level studies. In 1874 the Freedmen’s Aid Society took over the school which

remained under its auspices for 50 years.

Within five years of 1873, a group of emancipated slaves purchased the present site for the school. College level

courses and permanent facilities were added. In 1926, The Women’s Home Missionary Society joined with the

Board of Education of the church to make Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., formerly co-educational, a

college for women. The challenges that were overcome to establish Bennett demand that today’s challenges be

met and overcome to ensure her survival.

For 144 years women have found Bennett to be the ideal place to foster the constant rhythm of ideas. Each

student’s individual need for self-expression and desire for achievement is constantly nurtured. The College

fosters a strong respect for every student. Today, in the midst of a very active renaissance, Bennett is preparing

contemporary women to be well educated, productive professionals, informed, participating citizens, and

enlightened parents. The College offers twenty-four areas of study in Education, the Social Sciences, the

Humanities, and in Natural and Behavioral Sciences and Mathematics. Numerous opportunities to study at other

higher education institutions at home and abroad are available to continue the educational enrichment of

Bennett’s students.

The goals of the College continue to focus on the intellectual, spiritual and cultural growth of young women

who must be prepared for lifelong learning and leadership. Since 1930 more than 5,000 women have graduated

from Bennett College. Known as Bennett Belles, they continue to be among contributing women of

achievement in all walks of life.

Mission

Bennett College is a small, private, historically Black liberal arts college for women. The College offers women

an education conducive to excellence in scholarly pursuits; preparation for leadership roles in the workplace,

society, and the world; and life-long learning in a technologically advanced, complex global society. As a

United Methodist Church-related institution, Bennett College promotes morally grounded maturation,

intellectual honesty, purposeful public service, and responsible civic action.

The College welcomes students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds, recognizing that the educational

experience is enriched and strengthened when multiple voices are represented and heard. Operating in an

interdisciplinary, learning-centered environment, students, working with faculty and staff, will learn to use

sophisticated intellectual skills, think analytically, and solve problems in ways that respect a variety of

viewpoints and deepen their understanding of different cultures.

At Bennett College, education takes place in an environment of open inquiry where teachers and students are

immersed in educational processes that build community, foster authentic research, create knowledge, and

advance scholarship and personal empowerment. Students will leave Bennett College prepared for success in

the world of work and further studies, possessing a greater appreciation of the history and culture of Africa and

the African Diaspora, the struggles and accomplishments of women, and a realization of their own ability and

the possibilities to help change the world.

Philosophy

Bennett College’s undergirding philosophy is that a high-quality college experience should provide its women

students with strong academic and co-curricular programs that encourage their personal development, endorse

life-long learning, and prepare them to meet the needs of an ever-changing society.

Bennett College values and respects every member of its community. As a United Methodist Church-related

institution, the College believes that education should be related to humanitarian ends.

Drippin’ iN Succe22: Welcome Week

Belles of 2022,

We welcome you to one of the most transforming weeks you’ll

ever experience. The Bennett College community works

together to play a part in a week filled with a variety of activities

made just for you. All events during welcome week are

mandatory for all incoming Freshwomen to attend. The

activities will vary from sister bonding to late night gatherings.

Student Leaders are going to work very closely with you all to

ensure that your experience is one you will never forget. Keep in

mind that sisterhood is a major part of the Welcome Week

experience. We welcome you to share your culture and

traditions as we share Bennett’s with you!
