You could do this by giving up food, desert, electronics, coffee, extra busyness (like playing a game on your phone just to pass me), etc. Although, giving up things in our life is great, the important thing is to drawl closer to the Lord. The purpose of lent is to stop focusing on ourselves and start focusing on Christ. If we give something up, but do not use that extra me to meet with Jesus through prayer, bible reading or meditaon...we miss the point. In fact lent reminds us that Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness enduring temptaon while he prepared to begin his ministry. Jesus gave up food for 40 days, now we cant do that. However, Jesus showed us that He sacrificed food and was tempted so that He could really focus on communicang to His Heavenly Father. Luke 4:1-13 says, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, leſt the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.Jesus answered, It is wrien: Man shall not live on bread alone. The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. If you worship me, it will all be yours.Jesus answered, It is wrien: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. If you are the Son of God,he said, throw yourself down from here. For it is wrien: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will liſt you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Jesus answered, It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to the test’. When the devil had finished all this tempng, he leſt him unl an opportune me”. Have you ever parcipated in lent before? If you have and you are honest did you completely follow through with staying away from the item you gave up? If you did follow through, that is amazing, but did you grow closer to the Lord? If you didnt follow through, that is okay, but did you grow closer to the Lord? You see lent is not just about giving something up it is about communicang to the Lord. I dont think Jesus really cares if we give something up. However, I know he cares that we grow with Him. If giving something up will help us to build a stronger relaonship with Him of course He wants us to do that. Not because He doesn't want us to enjoy the things in life, but because He doesn't want those thingsto consume us. John 10:10 says, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. Do you want to live life to the fullest? Lent

The month of March is exciting because we all know spring is just around the corner! I don’t know about you, but after a cold winter I always look forward to the soon to come warm breeze and flowers everywhere. Just thinking about it brings a smile to my face. In the spring many will choose to participate in spring cleaning. The typical scrubbing, dusting and possibly even doing away with some items. Have you ever thought about spring cleaning your heart? You know looking real deep to see if there are any struggles that you need to give over to the Lord? Well March is a great time to give up some things in your life for... lent! You could do this by giving up food, desert, electronics, coffee, extra busyness (like playing a game on your phone just to pass time), etc. Although, giving up things in our life is great, the important thing is to drawl closer to the Lord. The purpose of lent is to stop focusing on ourselves and start focusing on Christ. If we give something up, but do not use that extra time to meet with Jesus through prayer, bible reading or meditation...we miss the point. In fact lent reminds us that Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness enduring temptation while he prepared to begin his ministry. Jesus gave up food for 40 days, now we can’t do that. However, Jesus showed us that He sacrificed food and was tempted so that He could really focus on communicating to His Heavenly Father. Luke 4:1-13 says, “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.” The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.” The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test’. When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time”.

Have you ever participated in lent before? If you have and you are honest did you completely follow through with staying away from the item you gave up? If you did follow through, that is amazing, but did you grow closer to the Lord? If you didn’t follow through, that is okay, but did you grow closer to the Lord? You see lent is not just about giving something up it is about communicating to the Lord. I don’t think Jesus really cares if we give something up. However, I know he cares that we grow with Him. If giving something up will help us to build a stronger relationship with Him of course He wants us to do that. Not because He doesn't want us to enjoy the things in life, but because He doesn't want those “things” to consume us. John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. Do you want to live life to the fullest? Spend more time with Jesus.

Luke 22:14-20

When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table.

Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins.

For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”

Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.

For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.”

He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.

FEAR IS A LACK OF TRUST IN GOD

I was listening to FamilyLifeToday Radio and a speaker defined “Fear” as a lack of Trust in God. I sat back in my seat and had to really ponder those words. When we look around at the world today it’s so easy to be drawn into fear. It plays such a major role in our culture, news, media, movies, schools, community etc. How often do we allow fear to control our decisions, perspective and world view? Why do we forget that at the end of the day, after every tragedy, after every natural disaster God is still in control? When I was little and I would get stressed out, overwhelmed, or scared my dad would look at me and open his hand. Each time he would tell me “look at this”. I would drawl my eyes slowly usually out of frustration to look at his hand. Then he would say “God has you right here in the palm of His hand”. This powerful statement has stuck with me over the years. When I look out into the world and become fearful I look down at my hand knowing that God has me right where He wants me in the palm of His hand. Do you know and believe that you are in the Palm of His Hand? 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”. Fear can not overtake you or define you if you trust God more than anything going on around you. It is your trust in Him and His abilities that will allow you to overcome any fear. So the real question is do you trust Him? -Tiffany Schlup

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS & SERVING CHRIST

“Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the Instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
