From the President’s CornerA sincere and heartfelt welcome to both our new families and those returning in 2017. This is my first year as President and it is a great honour along with my fellow Benwerrin Committee members to work hand in hand with the exceptional teaching staff at Benwerrin in 2017.

Both myself and the recently elected committee members are fully committed in supporting the growth of the kindergarten and our key principal focus area is providing a safe learning and fun environment for all. A list of your 2017 committee members is displayed on the main entry notice board.

Benwerrin is presently experiencing strong interest and close to all 2017 places being filled.

The first term has been productive for all. Along with the challenges of daily classes, the Benwerrin Committee and teaching staff have been meeting regularly to review the process of assessing and identifying the future requirements of the kindergarten to meet head on the challenges of tomorrow. These range from, learning resources to future growth plans and financial modelling to ensure the centre remains strong and well placed to cater for future needs.

Our recent Bunnings sausage sizzle and ‘Welcome to Benwerrin/Easter BBQ’ where both big success stories and very well received by all. I would like to express my personal appreciation to both the fundraising committee and to all those who supported the events for a ‘job well done’.

As we near the end of term, I take this opportunity to wish all a safe and happy break.

Thank you.

Year Old Koala Group NewsDuring first few weeks of term Christine and I had the pleasure in meeting both staggered Koala groups of children and families. Having the two half Koala groups allowed an opportunity for educators to get to know each child individually before bringing the whole group together. This also allowed those children who were feeling a little unsure or teary, a smaller group of children a better ratio of staff to sit with them and give them the time they needed.

One of our main goals at this time of the year is to ease the children into their new routine, and help them to feel a sense of belonging as quickly as possible. We aim to provide a warm, safe and secure environment where new friendships can form and the children can quickly develop relationships with the staff and other children.

There were many opportunities for indoor and outdoor experiences to encourage small and large group participation. Some include: train set, dolls, trucks, dinosaurs, play dough, bikes, climbing frame, jumping mat, trampoline and books. A selection of dress – ups, some cultural and a variety of open-ended props in our home corner were provided for children to role-play aspects of their family life. We have developed our Chinese lanterns during Chinese New Year celebrations and have displayed our finished work in the kinder room.

To support children’s ways in which they connect and participate with others and the natural environment, we have started our Belonging Tree prints and these will be displayed for all children to observe and recognise their right to belong to the Benwerrin Kinder community. Our preparation for Easter celebrations continues. We will further support the Koala children in forming reciprocal relationships and in building friendships throughout the year supporting children with their interactions, negotiating roles, expressing themselves, listening to others, sharing, turn taking and showing empathy for others.

To support children’s wellbeing we have continued to engage in consistent daily routines such as morning activities, group mat time, snack times and outdoor play. We have also provided many opportunities where children could enjoy moments of solitude and enjoy a variety of books in the reading area. Much interest was shown with the primary colours at the painting easel.

To support confidence and to develop dispositions for learning we have been encouraging the Koala children to become independent in taking responsibility for their belongings – placing artwork in their locker or the koala art basket, unpacking own bags, opening/closing snack boxes, or when using the bathroom. We also encourage independence with children’s choice in play areas and the materials provided.

Children have been expressing wonder and interests in the environment using their senses to explore with the nature sea table, coloured rice trough, rock pool, magnet fishing, Easter imaginative table, jungle animals and dinosaur enclosure. Everyone is enjoying their time outdoors with plenty sunshine and physical play as this is important for their health and physical wellbeing. Children have demonstrated curiosity and enthusiasm during our cooking experience.

We enjoyed making pancakes together, mixing ingredients and exploring maths and science concepts. For children to broaden their learning about the world and explore using imagination, we have provided a range of tools and creative art experiences: such as marble paintings, hand prints, textured brushes, crayons, a variety of textas, open ended three dimensional art and natural materials on the play dough table.

We continue to interact with the children and support their interactions with others and are always encouraging positive language towards others. During conversations and conflict and we continue to reinforce these skills at group time. We sing a variety of songs and have read a series of books of interest. We have also begun to act out an old time favourite “Old McDonald Had a Farm” song. Many children have

shown enthusiasm and interest with this interactive song. We have also provided many ways of communicating ideas through a range of media. These include: arts and crafts, music and movement, play dough, kinetic sand, sand play and block play.

Thank you to our parent helpers who have supported our kinder program this term.

Upcoming Learning Experiences:

• Work on Identity • Scissor work • Autumn Exploration • Wiggerly Worm Drama Incursion • Show and Tell • Recycling • Mothers Day/Anzac Day

Belonging – Who We AreWe are enjoying learning about each other and getting to know the individual children that make up the Possum group. The Possum group continues to evolve as new children arrive and we are all, as a group learning, about each other and what makes us individuals

and what makes us special. Our 3 year olds are a good mix of children and Treesje and I are busy developing their sense of independence and confidence in themselves to do tasks on their own. We demonstrate, encourage, and support the children (scaffold) and they have lifted to our expectations.

Our 3 year old’s are learning how to share and to take turns, they are being supported to respond with words rather than their bodies and sounds, they are learning to take the initiative and to determine their own path following their own interests, they are sitting at the table to eat and waiting while others finish, patience, listening, confidence, friendship skills, following instruction, there is so much happening in a very short time.

Already so much growth has occurred as they learn about our kinder environment and settle into the routines and expectations of kinder.

Term one’s main focus is on developing the children’s sense of security and belonging in our kinder environment and as we still have children turning 3 and commencing in Term 2 out group dynamic continues to evolve. In Term 2 once we have all our group at kinder, and settled, we look forward

to extending them and continuing to develop their curiosity and developing their friendship skills as they grow and move towards more interactive play with each other.

Chinese New YearChinese New Year was shared and celebrated with lantern making and stories that many of our children identified with and they shared their memories with the group.

PancakesPancake making was lots of fun and our Possums really enjoyed adding ingredients and stirring the mix. They worked well together taking turns and observing each other as they worked.

Possums To encourage a sense of belonging to the Possum group we have investigated Possums briefly but will touch on this again next term. We enjoyed watching a YouTube about Possums and followed this with an art activity decorating our own Possums. The children really enjoyed working with the stickers.

EasterActivities have started for Easter and this is a great time to be creative and let the children really express themselves through their art. We have used marble

art to decorate eggs and it has been interesting observing those children who don’t like to get their fingers dirty work with the trays rolling the marbles through the paint.

They love stickers and enjoyed sticking dots and stars onto an Egg shape, using fine motor skills and spatial awareness to place them carefully. All our children participate in our intentional art activities as by choice some would not. Exposure to new experiences is learning in itself as the preparedness of an individual to try new challenges, or to extend themselves outside of their comfort zone, are learning dispositions that we take with us on our lifelong learning journey.

Floor TimeOur Possums love floor time., They are very musical and enjoy songs and dances. We all love “Fuzzy the Clown” and are happy to bounce around to “Rubber Ball”. They respond well to music and singing a song will quickly get their attention and engagement.

Treesje and I are having lovely moments with the Possum children and are looking forward to an amazing year of growth and discovery with them.

 Year Old Echidna Group News

First Week at Kinder Our first week of 4YO kinder was so exciting for the children. They all settled very well into their long day program. They confidently and capably participated in all areas of the program while enjoying the beautiful indoor and outdoor environment.

The children learned to collect their own snack boxes from the trolley for morning and afternoon tea. They will need to practice their new routine a few times before they are confident with this. In doing so, we hope to develop their sense of autonomy (do things for themselves) encouraging inter-dependence and self help skills.

To celebrate “Chinese New Year” the children made paper lanterns with coloured paper, scissors and crayons. Chinese eating and cooking implements were added to home corner for children to explore and include in their dramatic play. We invited a parent to make some fried rice for the children to eat. This broadens their understanding of other cultures, making connections and being respectful of being and doing. (LO2)

All these experiences enable the children to explore their environment, engage in shared learning experiences which support small and large

group participation (LO 1) and social interactions (LO 2) during their early stages of getting to know each other and re establishing friendships at kinder (LO2).

Chinese New Year To explore the diversity of culture within our group we intentionally set up the learning environment with small and large group participation utilising cultural resources and experiences for children to engage in.

To celebrate Year of The Rooster we discussed what roosters looked like and the children constructed their own roosters utilising a variety of materials.

We watched a Dragon dance on the IPAD, traditionally performed during Chinese New Year and leant to say Happy Chinese New Year … Gong Xi Fa Cai (Mandarin) For group work we constructed a Chinese dragon using a

variety of recycled silver tubing, small boxes, plastic tops, pipe cleaners and feathers. The children applied thinking strategies such as problem solving, researching and investigating skills and with perseverance and anticipation we finally completed the Chinese dragon. (LO 4.1/ 4.2)

We were ready for the parade. While I led the parade some children lined up along the dragon and others played musical instruments. Gong Xi Fa Cai!! It was so wonderful and rewarding watching everyone engage in a meaningful experiences exploring and acknowledging the cultural heritage of our group and giving children an understanding of other cultures.

It is more than having items displayed in the room. We recognise that a family is a child’s central learning environment and that is why we encourage open door policy for all families. We aim to understand and incorporate each child’s family background into the kinder, conveying awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of our community. Children respond to diversity with respect as well as giving them a sense of belonging to our Echidna group (LO 2.2).

Onsite Evacuation Russell from F.E.S (Fire Emergency Services) visited the kinder. He engaged the children in a conversation about his role as the F.E.S Officer. He checked the different fire extinguishers and the fire blanket in case of an emergency should arise.

The children were problem solving, inquiry, hypothesising and using reflective thinking to answer his questions. They were given meaningful learning, building knowledge and understanding about their world.

To meet the National Regulations the kinder is required to be equipped with

Page 7: Benwerrin BULLETIN - Benwerrin Kindergarten 1 2017 WEB.pdf · Benwerrin Bulletin | Term 1 Newsletter of Benwerrin Kindergarten | March 2017 Page Term 1 | March 2017 Benwerrin BULLETIN

Page Benwerrin Bulletin | Term 1 Newsletter of Benwerrin Kindergarten | March 2017

the appropriate resources in case of an emergency should arise and practice the kinder EMP Emergency Management Plan each term (QA 2). In a large group situation we discussed the ON SITE emergency plan with the children and practiced this scenario. The children approached a new safe situation with confidence. (LO1.1)

Water Recycling – Sustainable Practices To further develop sustainable and environmental practices within our programs we had a new water pump and tank installed at the kinder. The children learned about water recycling and looking after our natural environment.

In small group situations we observed the spouting and tubing leading into

the tank. What is this for? We also discussed about water wastage and how we can become a water conservationist

The children all had an opportunity to use the pump; they were able to coordinate the pumping using their hand and arm, with some assistance from their peers and waited their turn to fill the containers with water. Through ‘hands on’ experiences the children learn about caring for the environment and increase their knowledge of the natural environment and encourage them to become socially responsible and show respect for the environment. (LO 2.3)

We will continue to use the water pump for outdoor experiences such as building channels, observe water move through piping, mud and sand digging.

Our Belonging TreeStarting a new year in a new environment can sometimes be difficult emotionally so we have created …our own Belonging Tree.

During Term 1 we have been exploring belonging and identity with the children. They were excited to hang their photos on the tree. This is aimed to facilitate and contribute to

a child’s sense of belonging to their new environment and social group and teaching children that they are all special individuals that make up Our “Echidna Family.” During this process the children explore and share their self identity which contributes to a child’s feeling safe, gaining confidence and developing a strong sense of well being. Upon reflection the Echidna group children have already developed such a strong sense of identity and belonging to our Echidna group.

We look forward to Term 2 with dancing with Miss Vanessa (Jitter bugs), Mother’s Day Luncheon, Wild Action and so much more!!

Year Old Kangaroo Group NewsIt has been a busy start to the term!! The Kangaroo children have settled well into their new environment, getting to know their Educators and their peers. The children have been confidently and enthusiastically engaging with social and physical environments both indoors and outdoors through their relationships and play.

One of our main goals at this time of the year is to ease the children into their new routine, and help the children feel a sense of belonging to their kinder group as quickly as possible.

Angie and I aim to provide a warm, safe and secure environment which builds healthy relationships and supports children’s wellbeing and social development. These relationships will provide children a base for lifelong learning.

All About MeThis term we have begun our work on strengthening children’s identity and further support a strong sense of belonging to our Kangaroo group. We are learning more about ourselves. We have been sharing our ‘All about Me’ stories.

We have begun our inquiry about what we look like, by drawing self portraits using mirrors to examine our features.

We have also made 3-dimensional creative art of ourselves adding recycled materials to display on our Belonging Tree.

CookingDuring term one cooking proved popular with our Kangaroo children. Participating in food preparation experiences provides the benefits of shared learning explorations for children, to use their senses (see, hear, smell, taste and touch), explore the purpose of a range of tools, builds confidence, develops language and turn taking skills and allows us to explore mathematical and science concepts such as weight, and changes to consistency when ingredients are mixed (EYLDF Outcome 4: Learning). So far we have made pancakes, and

made chocolate play dough and dyed hard boiled eggs for Easter celebrations. During Term 2 we will invite families to cook cultural foods at the kinder.

Friendship TreeTo help our Kangaroo children develop a sense of belonging, build social skills and positive relationships at Benwerrin we have engaged in a project to develop a poster and an area in our yard which we named the ‘Friendship Tree’.

Our Friendship Tree is a place where the children can sit when they are feeling sad, lost or don’t have anyone to play with and other children can approach them and talk or play with them during

outdoor play. We have discussed what we can say when we notice someone sitting at the tree when he/she needs someone to play with. Together we have a made our poster to hang on our tree. I am very proud of the Kangaroo children as they have displayed such respect, maturity, empathy and care towards others in the group. Keep it up!!

Love is in the Air

This term we have begun our discussions about feelings. Saint Valentine’s Day being celebrated this month was a wonderful opportunity to discuss our appreciation for the people we love.

Having the skills to express feelings is considered extremely important and we will constantly take the opportunity to practice this. Children are still discovering who they are so to think about someone else can sometimes become difficult. During our morning meeting, to help prompt further thinking and encourage expressive

Page 9: Benwerrin BULLETIN - Benwerrin Kindergarten 1 2017 WEB.pdf · Benwerrin Bulletin | Term 1 Newsletter of Benwerrin Kindergarten | March 2017 Page Term 1 | March 2017 Benwerrin BULLETIN

language, I asked the children questions. Many expressed love for family members and friends. Then each child was invited to decorate a heart shaped card and we added a message to give to that special person.

Swim Safety IncursionThis month Swim World Glen Waverley came to visit our kinder. The Kangaroo group learned about the importance of how to stay safe around water. The children met Squirt the Swim safety mascot, learnt a water safety song and received a free show bag. The children showed much interest, listening attentively and were enthusiastic

participants in gaining awareness about swim safety and the importance of the ‘NEVER SWIM ALONE’ message. This interactive group experience also strengthened community links to meet the needs of our Benwerrin families and their children.

Harmony Day To celebrate cultural diversity week and Harmony Day, we have engaged in a range of experiences to investigate our own cultural heritage and other cultures from around the world. To help celebrate we had cultural dress up day. It was wonderful to see the various cultures that make up our Kangaroo group.

Thank you to Navkirat’s mother and aunty for sharing information about the cultural garment the ‘Saree’ from India.

Thank you to our families for helping to make this day a success. Inviting the children to dress up in cultural

attire allows us to appreciate, share knowledge and become aware of connections, similarities and differences within the kinder group.

Year Old Wombat Group NewsBelonging – Who We AreWe have enjoyed learning about each other and getting to know the individual children that make up the Wombat group.

The children are learning each other’s names, participating in shared activities and enjoying playing together. We are observing friendships developing and encouraging new ones as our group grows. The Wombat group continues to

evolve as new children arrive. We each stuck our face on a body and decorated it, we graphed our group hair and eye colour identifying commonalities and differences.

This is a numeracy activity with one to one correspondence and counting, and more importantly it is an activity about Identity. Who we are as individuals as well as who we are as individuals within this Wombat group. We are all similar but we are also different and that is what make us individuals.

Chinese New YearChinese New Year was shared and celebrated through a variety of mediums. We use books to share foundation knowledge of the celebration with our students sharing their experiences with the group, and then art activities making lanterns and

a group firework poster, completing our investigation with the group making fried rice - this experience identified how few children are actually aware of where their food comes from so we spontaneously extended the experience to discuss each ingredient in more details using the computer and printing off images.

We will have an in-depth investigation into food in Term 2.

Page 10: Benwerrin BULLETIN - Benwerrin Kindergarten 1 2017 WEB.pdf · Benwerrin Bulletin | Term 1 Newsletter of Benwerrin Kindergarten | March 2017 Page Term 1 | March 2017 Benwerrin BULLETIN

WombatsAs the Wombat group we identified what prior knowledge we had as a group about Wombats then enjoyed watching a few YouTubes on them. Following this we discussed what we had learnt and extended this learning into our art drawing pictures and making our own and a group box Wombat. The discussion as we decorated our Wombat was fantastic as I heard what the children had learnt from our discussions and the YouTubes. “this is the hole where the baby lives, these are its whiskers, it has sharp nails for digging”

RecyclingWe have just started on the 3 R’s. Reduce Re-Use Recycle. Learning about sustainability and increasing our awareness of our impact on our world and how we can make simple changes in our lives to make our world a better place – these are really important lessons.

We watched a YouTube on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and saw how our rubbish is floating in the sea, impacting on marine life, and a second one which followed our recycling rubbish to the factory to be separated out and recycled. We discussed our 3 rubbish bins we use at kinder, the yellow recycling, the green compost/worm

farm organic bin, and our blue bin that we put our rubbish in (which goes in the dark green bin at home). We will continue to investigate this but already the children are discussing where to put their lunch rubbish.

Finger Gym/RoutinesThe children are quickly getting used to our class routines. Already when they come in after our afternoon play they take their hats off and lay on the mat for some relaxation.

We use small round glass pebbles that we place on their forehead and they lay still so it doesn’t fall off. After some quiet time, we transit into finger gym

and each child spends 5 minutes at a table doing the required activity then moves on to the next table for another 5 minutes. The activities swap every 2 weeks so the children have 4 sessions to participate in each activity.

When we spend too much time outside and don’t have time for finger gym the children ask why we are missing it. This is a beautiful 4 year old group who engage quickly and deeply in activities for extended periods of time. Christine, Chloe and I are really enjoying being them and looking forward to an amazing year with them.

The Committee is solely run by volunteer parents. The Committee is responsible for the functioning of the kinder including all aspects of financing, adhering to Acts and Regulations, employment of staff, enrolments and other administration matters.

The Committee’s role is extremely important and without the generous support of parents every year, our educators would find it difficult to have the time to plan and deliver our high quality programs that in the end directly benefits our children. FundraisingThe 2017 fundraising year has started with a bang with the Bunnings sausage sizzle held on the 5th of March. We got off to a slow start with variable weather (starting with drizzle then rain) but it turned out to be a nice day, and our volunteers did a great job to raise a total of $1,063 for our kinder.

Thanks to all who helped with this event, whether in the BBQ tent, or spreading the word to friends and neighbours who came to support us.

The Welcome BBQ was held on Sunday the 26th of March. Many of our families came out to enjoy a sausage, a drink and had a chance to get to know each other just a little bit better. We hope that everyone had a wonderful time.

Special thanks to Kate and Chris Denmead, parents from our Wombat Group, for contributing bread for both the Bunnings sausage sizzle and

the Welcome BBQ. Many thanks to everyone who came along and to those that helped in setting up, cooking and packing up.

Term one is always a busy one, with the Welcome BBQ and Easter. A huge thank you goes to all the families that kindly donated goodies towards our Easter hampers. The hamper raffle was drawn at our Welcome BBQ and the winners are listed below. Through the raffle and BBQ we raised a total of $273.

Thanks to Connie Yin for getting creative and doing a wonderful job wrapping all the hampers. Thanks also goes to Neil Angus (MP) for kindly donating a hamper for the raffle.

The team at Bakers Delight Burwood One helped the kinder to raise money with their delicious Hot Cross Bun fundraiser. Just in time to enjoy them for Easter!
