Reg Kelly Shield Cricket ‐ Round 2 v Ashtonfield PS

Last Friday our Open Cricket team played Ashtonfield PS in the second round of the Reg Kelly Shield. The condi ons for cricket were perfect and even though it was Black Friday, both teams were about to produce one memorable game. Ashtonfield won the toss and elected to bowl which suited us well. Our openers Chaise C and Beau W started well, scoring 19 runs off 4 overs before Chaise was run out. At the 12 over mark, we were well placed to score 100 plus with 2 for 47 and wickets in hand. Ashtonfield PS came out and reduced the run rate over the last 12 overs with some good bowling and fielding. Beau W, Zak S, Ben S and Jordan L all contributed with the bat, however we lost 6‐40 off the last 12 overs, giving us a score of 87. This was a defendable score, but we know how strong Ashtonfield are and we also knew that another 15‐20 runs would have been handy. This did not deter our bowlers or fielders, placing Ashtonfield under pressure at the 12 over mark with 3 for 35 and 12 runs behind our score at the same me. But we know that cricket is a game that can be lost on the last ball and it was going to take a mighty effort by both teams to win this game. At the end of the 18th over, Ashtonfield were 5 for 52. Jack S had taken two great catches in this me. Needing 36 off the last 6 overs at a run a ball and the game looked to be ours un l their number 7 batsmen took to our bowlers scoring 26 runs off two overs with 5 boundaries. This was star ng to look like a Black Friday when Beresfield PS stood up and gave a performance that was as good as I have seen in any school sport in my 21 years of teaching. Ashtonfield required 10 runs

Page 3: Beres eld Bugle€¦ · 3/4C—1L Full Cream Long Life Milk 3/4E—2 Minute Noodles 5pk or larger 3/4L—375g Peanut bu ©er 5/6D—Crackers any flavour 5/6E—500g Jam 5/6W—575g

off the last 4 overs with 4 wickets in hand and seemingly had the game in their grasp un l Jordan L and Chaise C took a wicket in each of their overs for only 3 runs. With only two overs le , Ashtonfield required 7 off two overs with 2 wickets in hand. Alex B bowled the first ball of the 23rd over and Ashtonfield hit a single to take the score to 81 with 11 balls remaining and on his second ball Ashtonfield found the boundary with 4 runs. Three runs required off 10 balls with two wickets remaining. It almost...almost seemed academic from this point, and then a wicket on his third delivery, bringing Ashtonfield's final batsman to the wicket. The game was now evenly poised and on a knife's edge. The next two balls were dot balls and on the last ball of Alex's over, Ashtonfield decided to take a quick single when the ball was picked up at square leg and thrown to the bowlers end, hi ng the bowlers leg and then hi ng the stumps, running out Ashtonfield's last ba er. The game was over and Beresfield won the game by 2 runs in an amazing game. Our team is diverse in its makeup and has lots of determina on and enthusiasm. It was a great game and one that I will not forget. Both teams played the game the way the game should be played, demonstra ng high levels of sportsmanship, skill and enthusiasm. Well done to all of the players and thank you to the handful of supporters who witnessed a memorable moment.

Tomorrow we play Paterson PS at Paterson. Please see me if you are able to assist with transport and also see the office to provide Travel and WWC details.
