8WHAT IS DERMIZAX?Dermizax is a waterproof, windproof and wicking membrane that is specially developed to protect against all kinds of weather while remaining as comfortable as possible.

The Dermizax membrane is a hydrophile material that utilises moving molecules, as opposed to most other membranes which have micropores. This has a number of advantages that makes Dermizax shell clothing the very best on the market thanks to the high performance and superior durability.

3-LAYER DERMIZAX: Consists of three layers that have been laminated together to make one fabric. The outer layer is made from water-repellent microfibre. The Dermizax membrane in the middle ensures that the garment is waterproof and wicking. The inner layer, closest to the body, consists of a mesh lining that protects the membrane and provides extra durability.

2,5-LAYER DERMIZAX: An extremely lightweight Dermizax fabric. Garments made from this material are mainly characterised by being very lightweight and offering minimal packing volume, as well as being windproof and waterproof. The lining is replaced with a surface treatment on the inside of the membrane. The superior durability of our other Dermizax fabrics is not achieved, but super light shell clothing is not intended for daily use.

2-LAYER DERMIZAX: Consists of two layers that have been laminated together to make one fabric an outer lining in microfibre and the Dermizax membrane. There is also a loose mesh lining closest to the body. This lining wicks moisture away from the body, protecting the membrane and retaining body heat. Since garments made from 2-layer Dermizax have a loose lining made from the wicking Fieldsensor material, they often feel warmer than 3-layer Dermizax.

NO PORES MANY ADVANTAGESMORE THAN 200% ELASTICITY! The Dermizax membrane is extremely flexible. The elasticity is more than 200%. This means that the membrane can be stretched up to twice its own length in four directions. This ensures that Dermizax garments are very comfortable to move in, while reducing the risk of delamination during extreme activities.

REGULATES TEMPERATURE. The moving polymer molecules also have the ability to move faster at high temperatures or high levels of activity. This means that breathability improves when you get hot and sweaty. When it is cold and you wish to retain excess heat, the polymer molecules slow down and the heat loss is reduced to a minimum.

DURABLE FUNCTION. The Dermizax membrane does not have micropores that can be obstructed by dirt and salt crystals from salt water. It also prevents water from sticking to the pores and expanding when the temperature drops below the freezing point. Dermizax retains its unique functions even when dirty and after many years of use.

EASY MAINTENANCE. The high quality of the membrane endures even after innumerable washes with regular washing powder. In contrast, the quality of materials made from micropores deteriorates after each wash as the ceramic particles of regular washing powder clogs the pores.

TOTALLY WATERPROOF. The water column, i.e. the value of waterproofness, is min. 20 metres for Dermizax materials.

HIGH WICKING ABILITY. The breathability is up to 30,000 g/m2/24h for 3-layer Dermizax and up to 40,000 g/m2/24h for 2-layer Dermizax.

CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT. The Dermizax membrane is continuously developed, which means that we are able to offer new and improved products each year.

NO IMPREGNATION NEEDED. Basically there is no need to impregnate Dermizax garments. The garments will retain their waterproofness even after long-term wear and tear and innumerable washes in a washing machine. However it may be beneficial to reimpregnate the outer lining to ensure that the water is repelled quicker from the garment surface, ensuring that it maintains its great breathability. If you wish to do so, we recommend using impregnation intended for breathable synthetic materials. The Dermizax membrane will nevertheless remain waterproof and breathable, as it is well protected on underneath the outer lining.

Wind is easily repelled.

Drops of water (10,000-2,000,000 diameter) are too big to penetrate the membrane.

Water vapour molecules pass freely around the Dermizax membrane's moving polymer molecules.

DERMIZAXNX. Provides maximum protection during particularly demanding activities and weather conditions. The wicking ability is twice as high as for traditional membranes (30,000-50,000 g/m2/24h for 2-layer Dermizax). Despite this, the DermizaxNX membrane maintains the same high waterproofness that Dermizax is renowned for (minimum 20,000 metres). This is the ultimate fabric for those who want a waterproof garment with the best breathability on the market as well as extremely good freedom of movement that is ideal for active use. Winner of the prestigious European Ski Award by ispo in 2011.

The mountain and hiking jackets from Bergans are very technical and ad-vanced clothing. These clothes have a job to do. All the jackets have been designed to protect the body from the weather in dif-ferent climates. Many of them also feature special functions for expeditions or moun-taineering. This is functional clothing.

Shell clothing Dermizax Our shell clothing are waterproof, windproof and breathable. Their breathability increases in high temperatures, allowing excess heat and misture quickly to be transported away from the body. When it is cold, and you want to be able to retain excess heat, heat loss is reduced to a minimum.

BERGANSLABORATORYIn Bergans own laboratory , we continuously test new fabrics and run quality checks on finished products. Before a fabric can be released into production, it must go through a number of demanding tests to ensure that it meets our high standards. Our products are used frequently in all kinds of weather. This is why we try to simulate the wear and tear and the forces of nature in our laboratory and we set our parameters high in order to have a good safety margin.

The water column test shows whether the membrane meets our requirements and whether the seams are waterproof. The apparatus exposes the fabric to water under pressure. Reading the pressure means that we can measure how waterproof a garment is.

We also test the tear strength of our fabrics to ensure that they are strong enough. First we make a tear. Then we measure how much force it takes to tear the remaining fibres.

The pilling test is also very important. Bobbles occur when loose fibres clump together when the fabric is exposed to friction, as parts of the fabric are continuously rubbed against other parts. The pilling test simulates how the fabric will be used. This gives us an indication of what the fabric can handle

before bobbles occur and the garment starts to look worn.

Tear strength is vital to fabrics such as Dermizax and Bergans Element. It is garments made from these types of fabrics that are subjected to the toughest use. We therefore use an ISO standard for workwear as standard. During the test, we rub a rough piece of sandpaper (100 grains per cm2) against the fabric. The test is run until two threads are torn and a small hole develops. The tear strength of a fabric is determined by the number of rounds the fabric can go on the machine before a hole develops. Bergans have very strict requirements about how many rounds a fabric must handle before it is considered for production.

In addition to the results from our laboratory, we also get invaluable feedback from our team of testers. They use our products over time, sometimes during extreme activities and in all kinds of weather. There is no better test than reality itself.

BERGANS'SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYAs a major supplier of outdoor equipment and leisure clothing, Bergans is committed to protecting the environment. We are conscious of our social responsibility and aware that everything we do affects the environment. We work actively with challenges concerning ethics, the environment and social responsibility, both within and outside of the company. Through this work, Bergans hopes to protect natural resources and contribute to sustainable development.

Through development and design, we aim to make conscious material choices in order to minimise our products' environmental impact. We also have very strict requirements for chemical content, and work with our suppliers to find good solutions that will minimise the use of chemicals.

We carry out checks of our suppliers' environment and working conditions, and implement improvements to ensure that the conditions are good and meet our standards.

As part of our responsibility, we try to improve energy efficiency, waste management, transportation and logistics in order to reduce emissions and minimise the environmental impact.

BERGANS'SOCIALRESPONSI-BILITYEthical Trading Initiative NorwayBergans became a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative Norway (IEH) in February 2009. Through this membership we have committed ourselves to work in accordance with the IEH's ethical guidelines for purchases, such as making improvements with regard to human rights, employment rights, development and environment.

The work of the IEH is based on the assumption that trade promotes development if safe working conditions can be ensured during the production of the products. Exploitive working conditions, child labour, work accidents and environmental destruction suppress development in countries that otherwise develop positively from international trade.

IEH membership entails our commitment and drive to contribute to improving these conditions.

Mountain PeopleMountain People is a voluntary organisation operating in the mountainous countries of Norway and Nepal. The organisation allows mountain people in Norway to help mountain people in Nepal to establish long term sustainable projects.

Bergans produce mountain equipment, and it is therefore natural for us to be involved in this project. We have contributed to building and running a school in Solukhumbu (near Everest) and another in the Makalu region, as well as a library/culture centre outside Kathmandu. One of Mountain People's goals is to build 50 kindergartens by 2015.

EOG and EOCAEuropean Outdoor Group (EOG) is an association of manufacturers in the European sport and outdoor pursuits industry. In 2006, the members' interests in environmental protection led to the formation of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA). Since then, the group has donated money to conservation projects in various parts of the world. Bergans is one of the founding members, and contribute with our time and expertise, and financially, to both groups.

Environmental LighthouseWe are proud that Bergans met the requirements to be officially recognised by the Environmental Lighthouse. This is a Norwegian certification scheme that places specific demands on our environmental work and sets specific quantifiable targets. As an Environmental Lighthouse approved company, we meet the requirements related to working environment, energy consumption, procurement and material consumption, waste management, transport and greenhouse emissions. This scheme is supported and recommended by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment.

Our intent is that we can contribute to an increased environmental commitment in our sector.
