Bermuda was once known as the “Isle of Devils”. The unfortunate nickname came from legends of ghastly spirits inhabiting the island—now thought to be the eerie callings of wild birds (most likely the Bermuda Petrel or Cahow) and the grunting of wild hogs at night. In the 1600s, Bermuda was a strategic location for ships sailing between Europe and the New World but the island’s treacherous reefs and occasional stormy conditions prevented many from considering visiting, never mind settling. That is until the fateful day in 1609 when Sir George Somers and the crew of the Sea Venture crashed upon the reef in the aftermath of a hurricane and decided to stay. 3 pence 1616
