Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)Fujitsu had started a PCF project in our Augsburg factory location in January, 2010. Completion was in Sptember Sptember

This project has been a cooperative effort with bifa, a G i t l i tit t (f d d b th t t German environmental institute (founded by the state of Bavaria), and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft a recognized German public research organizationGerman public research organization

Major findings have been achieved in measurability, carbon characteristics of different product groups and carbon characteristics of different product groups and prerequisites of PCF-reporting

ISO reporting standards (14067) are expected to become available in 2012

Climate Crisis Enables New ICT-MarketsRecent studies, like the “SMART2020”, indicate that ICT has significant potential to enable CO2 reduction in industrialized economiesindustrialized economies

For Germany, the ICT related potential alone is expected to be sufficient to satisfy the 2020 CO2expected to be sufficient to satisfy the 2020 CO2reduction targets requested by the UN IPCC (raise (BAU) 31% to 40% relative to 1990 baseline))

The leading target sectors for ICT-related climate protection are Transport / Buildings / Power-Distribution Distribution.

While part of the theoretical CO2 reduction potential is enabled by market forces the majority will require enabled by market forces, the majority will require changes in political boundary-conditions for business-activity in Europe

New Technologies Enabling “Green BY ICT”

Application-level technologiesSoftware In new vertical application fields like electricity meter (data) management real-time billing and demand-side (data) management, real time billing and demand side management, advanced buildings control or continuous monitoring of trucks M h li ti i i t f d t i f Many such applications give rise to new forms and topics of highlevel-services generated in the cloud Hardware technologies like digital metering devices, on-board g g gunits in trucks and various sensors, e.g. in buildings

Sensor-network technologiesSensor network technologiesSensor networks can be very large and constitute a new form “internet-like” communication structures (“Internet of Things” (IOT))(IOT))Such networks need new forms of cost-efficient, reliable base technology that can enable simple forms of deployment and can adjust to changing environments

Summary and PerspectivesICT has already enabled many forms of CO2 reduction

Many solutions, implemented to maximize business efficiency, have a CO2 reducing side-effect: Supply-Chain-Management is an

lexampleHowever, there is no accepted, standardized assessment methodology yet, to quantify the CO2 impact. FUJITSU has created la proposal

The climate crisis is creating new, very big ICT-markets with strong business potential in the SMART sectorswith strong business potential in the SMART sectors

Smart Grid will probably soon be the biggest overall ICT market at allCritical dates in the climate discussion are 2015 (peak), 2020 (-Critical dates in the climate discussion are 2015 (peak), 2020 (40%)
