I hope that you enjoyed your time with your children during the recent break and that they are now ready to continue their learning in term 3, well rested and enthusiastic. At the end of last term, we celebrated the learning and achievement of our students through our Principals Award assembly. I would like to congratulate our Term 2 award winners on their great achievements in literacy, numeracy and citizenship. The Principal’s Assembly and luncheon was well received and a just reward for their hard work in the classroom. A warm welcome to a number of new families that have joined the Bert Oldfield Public School Community and of course a sad farewell to those families that have left our school and have moved to other areas within Sydney, and for some, other states and countries. I hope our newer students have enjoyed their first week of school and have made many strong connections and friendships. Staffing I would like to extend on behalf of the Bert Oldfield Public School Learning Community a very warm welcome to Miss Axiak, a newly appointed teacher who has joined our great school. Miss Axiak was successful through the merit selection process, gaining her first permanent appointment with the NSW Department of Education and Communities, a great achievement for herself. Miss Axiak has taken up her teaching position on class 5/6H and has had nothing but praise for the students in her class, and is thoroughly enjoying her first few weeks at BOPS. We of course pass on our sincere thanks to Mrs Walden who was teaching 5/6H for the majority of term 2. In addition, I would like to pass on my congratulation to Ms Perente and wish her the best of luck as she embarks on a different role for the next few weeks. NSW Drought I have been personally shocked by the extent of the drought now gripping NSW, with over 99% of the state officially in drought and in desperate need of rain. The impact on our farmers and farms, livestock and agriculture has been devastating, and unless we can all pitch in and help out through our generosity, these conditions will start to have a significant effect on our lifestyle. I have been fortunate to have received some information from a member of our community who is very committed to helping the farmers and raising any and all help possible to assist them in easing the burden of this drought on their businesses and livelihood and the long term effects on NSW. Did you that it costs about $500 to feed a cow for 3 Months and farmers have upwards of 200-300 cattle to feed. A Truckload of hay costs $20,000.00. The NSW cow herd (breeding females) is down to 52% which means if the drought keeps going we won’t have enough cows left to rebuild the NSW state herd. Even if we get rain in the coming weeks, no pasture will grow until September (spring), so farmers are locked in to feeding through assistance for the next couple of months no matter what. Did you know that many children as old as 9 years of age that were born in the worst effected areas have never seen rain in their life. Information will soon be coming home about a school mufti day, where we will encourage all students to dress up as a farmer or in something with a farm theme, and donate $5.00 each to pass onto related charities including “Aussie Helpers are on the ground’ and ‘Buy a Bale’. If we all participate, we can raise $1200.00 to help them out. STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter an exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.

School Report, Semester one

You have hopefully received your child’s semester one report this week. We hope that you are proud of your child’s achievements and efforts. Our current report provides you with summative information about your child’s learning within their current stage. In NSW schools the curriculum and learning outcomes are divided into four stages, they being Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten), Stage 1 (Years 1&2), Stage 2 (Years 3&4) and Stage 3 (Years 5&6). Our report provides information about your child’s learning against these Stages. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Mr. Perrott if you have any questions. Enrolments for Kindergarten, 2019 It is Term 3 already and we are currently accepting applications for enrolment in Kindergarten 2019. If you have a child who will be turning 5 before 31st July, 2019 and you are intending to enrol them for next year, please complete an application form as soon as possible and return it to the office. Likewise, if you have a neighbour or friends with pre-school children who are intending to commence next year – please advise them to complete their application in the next few weeks. As our student numbers grow the number of applications for Kindergarten may have a significant impact on school organisation for next year. We already have a large number of enrolments for 2019 and we ask for your assistance in ensuring applications are sent in as soon as possible. “Application to Enrol” forms are available from the office. Compulsory School Attendance My sincere thanks to those parents who are ensuring that their children attend school each day and are on time each day. Attendance at school is a legal requirement with students required to arrive at school by 9:00am each day, if not earlier. From time to time, students are unwell or have family matters to attend to that impact on their attendance on a daily basis. Under these circumstances, parents have an obligation to let the school know, within 7 days, (preferably after 2 days continuous absence) of a child’s absence, either through a letter to the child’s teacher explaining the absence, an online notification through our ‘Skool Bag App, or through a phone call to the School Office to explain the absence. Parents that notify the school of the absence after the 7 days unfortunately place their child’s attendance record at risk. My thanks to those parent who always communicate the reasons for their children absence from school within the required time period. It is greatly appreciated. P & C My thanks to all the members of the P & C executive for their attendance at last week’s meeting. The next meeting, being held on Wednesday 15th August, will be the Annual General Meeting where the new 2018-2019 P & C executive will be selected. Please offer your service to the school to ensure the work this vital body does can continue for our students. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the P & C. Additional information about the Annual General Meeting is available within this newsletter and I encourage you to read on.

Thankyou

I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to Mr George Doubleson who has been working at our school for the last 3 months as the General Assistant. Mr Doubleson has been filling in for Mr Hamilton who has been on extended leave since the beginning of May. As Mr Hamilton returns to work next week, we would like to thank Mr Doubleson for his time and service to the Bert Oldfield Community.

Congratulations Ms Hayes It is with great joy that we formally announce the Birth of Leo Alexander, first child to Ms Hayes and her partner, Tim. Leo was Born on 11th July and mum and bub are well and getting use to what life is really like. We hope that Ms Hayes can return soon to teaching at Bert Oldfield Public School, though I suspect the lure of a growing family and bundle of joy might impact on that decision somewhat. We wish her and Tim health and happiness as they begin their family adventure. Education Week – Celebrating Public Education The 2018 Education Week theme is ‘Todays schools– creating tomorrow’s world’ and is an opportunity to celebrate learning at Bert Oldfield Public School together as a community. Wednesday 8th August will be our school ‘Open Day” and we invite you to join your children in the classroom from 12:00 to 12:40 as they engage in a variety of activities to challenge their thinking. The theme ‘Todays Schools - creating tomorrows worlds’ encompasses how we can equip our young students with the skills and capabilities to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We are focusing on thinking and creativity at Bert Oldfield, and each class will be engaging in an activity that will stretch their minds and creative genius. Our theme is centred around “Leonardo DaVinci’ one of the greatest scientists and creative inventors of our world. Our students will be in class inventing, designing, making and creating and they will need your help. After our ‘Open Classrooms” we would love you to join your children for a picnic lunch, and invite you to bring a chair and a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy the sunshine. Lunch on Wednesday will be early and will start at 12:50. After lunch we hope you can join us for the culmination of our Education week open day and head to the hall for the Music Aviva presentation of “Davinci’s Apprentice” a music and drama performance that tells the story of a young girl in the 16th century that dreams of becoming an apprentice to the great Leonardo Da Vinci. The show is essential viewing for every student and incorporates learning links to Drama, Visual Arts, Science, Technology and English. I extend my sincere thanks to those families that have paid for the show thus far, and encourage the small number still to pay to make payment before this Friday. On Thursday our magnificent choir and dance group will be performing at WestPoint Blacktown, singing and dancing on stage at the ‘On Four’ performance area from 12:00pm. We hope that you can make your way there and help support our performance groups. Athletics Carnival Our athletics carnival is scheduled for Friday 24th August here at school. Please keep this date available as we would love you to attend to support your children. The carnival will involve all students from Kindy to Year 6. Students turning 8 – 13 will have the opportunity to participate in shotput and long jump, and a host of age and category races. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will also participate in age races and a host of activities on the day. The P&C will be running a canteen and sausage sizzle and selling light refreshments.

Now would be a great time for your children to start practicing and getting

fit for all disciplines.

MONEY SENT TO SCHOOL When sending money to school we ask that you send it in an envelope with your child’s name, class and what the money is for. We are experiencing too many students bringing money into the office or handing it to their class teachers without envelopes which is leading to misplaced money. We request that you purchase a pack of envelopes, especially for school. Thank you.
