COMPANY

1959Jack Cadman opens his firstceramic conversion workshop.

1965Surrey-based brass-turning workshops are established.

1971Hank Besselink begins workingalongside Jack and they producethe library moveable wall light.

1972Our distressed brass finish isperfected and the first internationalorders are received.

1974The first ‘Smartie’ adjustablefloor lamp is made available.

1973The telescopic desklight is launched.

English design and craftsmanship together with apainstaking eye for detail, paid considerable dividends.The initial Besselink & Jones commission was for somestylish library lights destined for Windsor Castle. TheBesselink & Jones reputation was growing steadily.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, demand for our ever expandingrange continued to increase and our fine lighting becamemore widely available at premium stockists. Our owndedicated shop opened in Walton Street, Chelsea,offering a select collection of lighting alongside beautifulhandpicked antiques and the classic lamps andchandeliers enjoyed considerable success, both at homeand overseas. Indeed, the adjustable ‘Smartie’ floor lampproved to be particularly popular and is still part of ourrange today. Besselink & Jones continued to go fromstrength to strength.

Although today we have an archive of over 750 designs,we are by no means a mass producer of lights and have asmall and experienced team of artists and craftsmenworking with us. We have opened another workshop for

Besselink & Jones’ roots extend back more than fifty yearswith the foundation of Jack Cadman’s original ceramicconversion and brass-turning workshops in Surrey. HankBesselink, who came from a precision engineeringbackground, began working alongside Jack to developnew designs and techniques.

Attracting craftsmen in the fields of gilding, woodturning,cabinetry and engineering gave the workshops the skillsand experience to handle more delicate and complexprojects and before long they became regularly involvedin more specialist restoration of everything fromchandeliers to furniture.

Nearly a decade later, Hank formed a partnership withdesigner and accomplished artist Nigel Jones and soBesselink & Jones was born. As with all the bestcollaborations, our founders brought togethercontrasting but entirely complementary skills. What theyhad in common was a desire to create exquisite lightingof the highest caliber. A renewed passion for engineeringdecorative pieces, which combined the very best of

English design and craftsmanship at its very best.traditional hand-building techniques, together with artiststudios for our gilding and hand-painting projects. Here,our skilled engineers and craftsmen take great pride inincorporating all the elements of traditional quality withmodern manufacturing techniques.

Meanwhile, our trade showroom in Chelsea HarbourDesign Centre is a regular destination for members of thedesign community who are seeking the perfect lightingsolution for their clients.

Besselink & Jones pieces light the interiors and exteriorsof many wonderful private homes along with royalresidences, hotels, clubs, galleries, yachts and publicbuildings located around the globe. We like to think oursuccess is in no small part attributable to our unwaveringcommitment to maintaining the exemplary standards ofdesign, quality engineering and functionality which ourclients have quite rightly come to expect. Besselink &Jones is now one of the leading creators of fine, hand-built English decorative lighting. Our passion lives on.

1975Flemish design-inspired rangeof chandeliers is created.


1976Our first order from theUSA is received.

1979Asia becomes part of ourinternational client base.

1980Our first retail outlet isopened in London.

1984Successful interior designerand artist Nigel Jones joinsforces with Hank Besselink.

1985Our current Chelsea retail outlet isopened. We receive a commissionfor Windsor Castle and take on ourfirst five star hotel project.

1986We fulfil our first orderbound for the Middle East.

1987Our fine lighting becomesavailable at Harvey Nichols,Knightsbridge.

Every Besselink & Jones piece is hand-crafted and we stillemploy traditional methods which have elsewhere beenall too often cast aside. Whether handling ceramics, wood,metal, crystal, glass or painted material, we treatrenovation projects with the utmost sensitivity, so ourwork is in complete sympathy with the original.

Because of Besselink & Jones’ extensive internationalclientele, we also have considerable expertise in meetingboth low energy and overseas wiring standards and weare a recognised UL listed workshop working to strict CEEuropean and British Standards. So our clients can restassured that, wherever in the world our pieces are boundfor, not only will they look stunning, they can also berelied upon to function safely and effectively.

When it comes to the creation of fine lighting that willstand the test of time, there really is no substitute forexperience and at Besselink & Jones we have a strongheritage of traditional British engineering skills. In fact,our well-established workshop has been expertlyconverting ceramics and other decorative treasures intounique lamps for more than fifty years.

We continue to take great pride in our conversioncommissions but these days our much-expanded Surreyworkshop also specialises in brass-turning, crafting inbronze, metal plating, wood-carving, hand-painting andcolour-matching. Whichever technique we are using, weunderstand that there are no short-cuts when it comes toproducing well-engineered lighting pieces of the highestquality. That’s why we adopt an individual approach withan uncompromising dedication to detail.

Besselink & Jones - staying true to our heritage with engineering excellence. Bespoke commissions are also built in our workshops,where our teams of skilled craftsmen bring classic andcontemporary designs to life. We can even customise ourexisting designs to clients’ specifications and ourflexibility, together with our superior standards of service,has enabled us to develop long-standing relationshipswith many antique and interior design outlets in Londonand much further afield.

From restoration projects to new bespoke designs, fromthe cleaning of chandeliers to the conversion of antiquepieces, from classic brass-turned pieces to moderncreations in nickels, chromes or bronzes, from singlelamps to entire complex lighting systems, the Besselink &Jones workshops have a wealth of experience andexpertise and are proud to continue the tradition ofoutstanding British workmanship into the future.

Spun and dyed silks are sewn onto brazed frames, bound, lined and pleated, all by hand.

Select from two dozen honan coloured silks, plain card or hand painted dragons, bug or bees.

Our shades are also available in oiled, crackled distressed and aged parchment, or if you prefer,

you can just supply your own material. Then choose a shape from Empire, Wide Top, Coolie,

Square Portmeirion, Oblong, Pumpkin, American Drum and many others.
