Resveratrol is a powerful polyphenolic antioxidant found in grapes, red wine, purple grape juice and some berries, as well as in supplement form. Research suggests that resveratrol is a powerful free radical scavenger, inhibiting a destructive process called lipid peroxidation, which is associated with premature aging. 2. Vitamin B12 As you age, it becomes more difficult to absorb vitamin B12 (a vitamin necessary for proper red blood cell function, neurological function and DNA synthesis*) from food. This can lead to symptoms that are sometimes associated with aging, such as poor memory, confusion, trouble with balance, loss of appetite and more. Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal foods, such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products, as well as in supplement form. 3. CoQ10 Your body naturally produces CoQ10, an enzyme that helps cells produce the energy they need to fuel your body, but tissue levels peak at age 20 and decline with age, particularly in your heart. Further, certain common prescription drugs, including cholesterol-lowering statins, deplete CoQ10 levels in your body even more. While CoQ10 is found in meat and fish, it's difficult to get enough from dietary sources alone. A CoQ10 supplement may be particularly helpful for your heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas, as well as to help support a healthy immune system. 4. Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant that helps support liver, vision and nerve function.* It works against both water- and fat-soluble free radicals, and even helps to regenerate other antioxidants your body may be lacking. Alpha lipoic acid also helps to convert carbohydrates to energy at the cellular level, assisting with the regulation of blood sugar. 5. Acetyl-L-Carnitine helps offset age-related declines in energy production, and is most helpful in supporting energy function in your brain, as well as energy production at the cellular level. While your body can make all the carnitine it needs, age, dietary factors, stress and disease can contribute to deficiencies, making supplementation incredibly useful as you age. 6. Curcumin is the active compound in turmeric (an Indian spice often used in curry dishes), which has powerful antioxidant properties and promotes healthy cellular division, particularly in your GI tract.. It also supports liver detoxification, healthy immune response and promotes joint flexibility, all of which are essential as you age. In addition to direct antioxidant activity, curcumin may function indirectly as an antioxidant by inhibiting the activity of inflammatory enzymes or by enhancing the synthesis of glutathione, an important intracellular antioxidant. • Don’t wear “old lady shoes”. Playing it “safe” is a sure fire way to look old instantly. If you prefer neutral colors, no problem, just make sure you are not buying a clunky heavy sole, bulky boots or unstructured sloppy slipper, and be careful with sandals and gardening shoes. If wearing sandals, be sure you are pedicured. A heel will always be more flattering, because it lifts you taller, makes you stand up straighter, and makes your legs look great. If you prefer, go for the platform sole that offers the most protection and stability. If you must go a flat, than do a chic bal-let flat that fully covers the foot.

• Create a tiny waistline by wearing a wide belt at your waistline and topping with a jacket. What the eye sees is only the part of the belt that shows! This is a great way to remove 10 lbs right away

• Be careful not to select patterns that are child-like, for instance a Santa Sweater, or a top or jacket featuring appliqués of bears, puppies, or kitties. That is “too young”, and really only highlights your age.

• When selecting hosiery and shoes, make them coordinate as closely in shade as you can. Nude toned shoes are great with bare legs, for instance, and black tights with black boots. Try not to visu-ally ‘chop’ up the line from head to toe by introducing too many elements up and down.

• Drink your body weight in ounces per day. Example, if you weigh

150 lbs, drink 150 oz of water daily, or 19 -8 oz glasses per day. • Add berries, which are full of vitamin C, and dark, leafy greens—

particularly kale, spinach, and collard greens, prime sources of the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, to your diet. Dark, leafy greens are also rich in vitamin K, which plays a role in reducing bone loss and preventing fractures, and are a source of zinc, which helps break down damaged collagen, clearing the way for new collagen to form and smoothing surface lines in skin.

• Eat More Protein. "Protein provides the building blocks of colla-

gen," says F. William Danby, M.D., adjunct assistant professor of surgery (dermatology) at Dartmouth Medical School. As collagen and other proteins break down, the skin essentially folds into it-self, creating wrinkles and lines. Your skin will make collagen whether you dine on marbled steaks or skinless chicken breasts, but the leaner choice can help keep weight down.

• Sea food like tuna and salmon brings to the table a hefty dose of

omega-3 fatty acids, which may help guard against sun damage. In studies of mice, the fats significantly reduced inflammation and other immunological responses to sunlight that degrade collagen and, more worrisomely, can trigger skin cancer.

• Try adding fermented foods (Probiotics) to your diet Yogurt, kefir

and traditionally made (non-pasteurized) sauerkraut are examples of fermented foods that are naturally rich in beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. Consuming fermented foods is a natural way to neutralize the pathogenic bacteria by encouraging the growth of the friendly bacteria. Plus, probiotics are also known to help your body sustain healthy inflammatory balance -- another boon to help you fight the declines of aging.

• Get 30 minutes of exercise a day...or wear a pedometer to

measure out between 7500-10,000 steps per day. Get your heart rate up!

• Exercise your mind by doing things that make you think: cross-

word puzzles, playing games like chess or bridge, learning a new language. Learn something new every day.

• Add weight bearing exercise in your routine to build muscle mass,

which will burn more calories and build bone density. Soucres: goodhousekeeping.com , CNCAhealth.com, and Prevention.com

1. Hydrate: every morning when I wake I drink a big glass of water. When I’m hydrated, my skin is noticeably fuller, looks healthy and it naturally glows. Plumping the skin will help it

look more youthful.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. Nothing lessens the look of fine lines and gives skin a smoother, plumped-up look faster than the right moisturizer. Don’t be afraid to layer moisturizers if you’re feeling especially tired or the weather is dry. I recommend layering a wet, hydrating face moisturizer and a rich, dense cream to give skin a plumped-up, cush-

iony look. Also, try a bi-weekly hydrating mask.

3. Under-eye circles can become more pronounced as our bodies naturally reduce produc-tion of collagen and elastin, making us look tired and worn down. Using treatments prod-ucts specifically created for the eye area like a firming eye cream and a product to reduce puffiness and dark circles can help wonders to reduce the worn out look. Lighten the under-eye area with my “secret to the universe:” corrector and creamy concealer. First, apply a yellow-toned corrective concealer directly to dark and shadowy areas only (so you have to look and find the shadows) to correct the darkness, and then conceal with a concealer that is a shade lighter than your foundation. Be sure to apply it right up to the

lash line.

4. Even out your skin tone. Years of sun exposure can cause uneven skin tone, whether it’s dark spots or redness. Use a treatment product to address age spots, freckles, miasma, and areas of redness, and follow with a CC Cream to make your skin look smooth and

even.

5. Pop of Color. I always say that nothing makes you look more fresh and healthy than a pop of blush on the cheeks, like you’ve just come in from the outdoors. Apply by dusting a

bright shade onto the apples of your cheeks in an upward motion toward your hairline.

6. Line and Define. Fill your eyebrows in if they’ve become a bit sparse from years of pluck-ing, especially if you’ve started to wear glasses. Defined brows ensure that the glasses don’t overpower your face. If you like to wear eyeliner, try a softer color like a navy or chocolate brown. Black can start to look harsh and make the eyes appear to be smaller.

Learn which is the best line style for your eye shape!

7. Open The Eyes. Curling your eyelashes will open them up and make eyes appear larger; this can be accomplished with either a lash curler or by application technique. Layer on a waterproof mascara so it doesn’t come off on your eyelids or eyeglass lenses. If your lashes have become thinned, you can apply a treatment product called a lash enhancer to

thicken and lengthen the lashes while you sleep.

8. Get a Glow. While I’m a firm believer in SPF, I do think a sun-kissed look makes your skin appear healthy and counteracts any sallowness you have. You can achieve this by dusting on a bronzer – focus on the areas where the sun hits – forehead, chin, nose and cheek-bones, then follow with a light application of a cheek color only on the apple of the cheek,

as instructed in Tip #5.

9. Shimmer and Shine: Be careful here. Assess the texture of your skin and eye area and

select products that do not accentuate pores, imperfections and wrinkles.

10. Lip Service. Women often complain that their lips look thinner as they get older. Use a lip primer to help fight the fine lines around the lip and prevent feathering. Apply a lip liner to help them look fuller. Fill in with a creamy anti-aging lipstick formula to hydrate and soften the lips and give them a fuller, more youthful look. Lastly, apply a light shade

of light-reflecting lip gloss over it in the center of both lips.

• Nail It. Hands and nails can often betray your age. Be sure to moisturize your hands and wear SPF on them. If your nails are brittle, cut them short, and apply a dark color like a navy, or port, to them. It looks refined, but modern, and we all talk with our hands, point things out to people, so it is the first thing a person will notice when looking at your hands.

• Don’t Forget Your Décolleté--this is your upper chest area below the chin and above your bra. When applying your anti-aging prod-ucts to your face, carry them down into this area.

• Hair color and style. Find a qualified, talented hair professional to consult with you on an updated style and the appropriate shade for your hair type, face shape and lifestyle. If you have grey hair, make it silver! Wear it in a style, ei-ther up in a barrette or cut into a current, updated style, and ‘do’ it every day.

• Be sure to touch up your hair, powder your nose, and refresh your lipstick before going to meet peo-ple, going in to the store. Not only will you get better treatment at the restaurant or store, but you will feel more confident of yourself because you know you look the best you can on that

day.

• Facial hair: a little facial hair is natural, but there is a limit! If you know this hair wasn’t there when you were younger, or if it is more than 1/16” long, wax it, tweeze it, depilitize it, or electrolysize it. Also, be sure to remove stray nose and ear hairs, tweeze hairs on moles, etc.

• A thicker brow can make you look younger, fresher and better rested. Do not over-pluck.

• Use a great brow pencil or brow powder that matches you hair tone. Simply fill in your eyebrows if over-plucked or over-arched. You want a brow that is thick yet manicured.

• The highest point of the brow should be about two-thirds of the way out, not in the middle of the brow.

• The tail of your eyebrow should extend to the corner of your eye, and can be even longer if it doesn’t end vertically lower than the point where your brow begins — you want a lifted shape, not a droopy one.

• Always brush your brows upward at a 45 degree angle to open up the eye.

• If you brows have thinned or have fallen out at the ends, apply a brow enhancer product to help them grow back in!
