BEST CASE STUDENT EXERCISES

TIP: Help Students Name ExercisesTo avoid assignment confusion, give your students the below instructions in order for you to identify their completed exercises.

1. Click the New Client button on the Client List window.

2. Select the desired exercise, click Next.

3. Edit the New Index As field and insert your name or student ID. For Example, Exercise 1: John Smith.

NOTE: Instruct students on your preferred naming convention.

4. Click Finish. This renames and saves your exercise to the Client List window.

The Best Case Educational Version provides you with eight preloaded student exercises that simulate preparing a petition for a Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 client. Accompanying worksheet instructions with case information can be downloaded at the online Instructor Resource Center at www.bestcase.com/edu/instructors. You may assign these preloaded exercises or create your own. Preloaded exercises are also accessible through the Student Resource Center at www.bestcase.com/edu/students.

Step 2: Select the desired Exercise and click Next.

Create Custom ExercisesAll Best Case Bankruptcy files (.bcb) found in C:\BestCase_EDU\Educate\Exercises will appear as an exercise choice.

1. Create a Best Case client file to your exercise specifications. Edit the Index As field, which can be found by clicking Notes in the toolbar and selecting the Setup Information tab; this will control the title of the exercise as it appears to students.

2. Open My Computer in Windows and navigate to your installation of Best Case (usually C:\BestCase_Edu) and open the Clients folder.

3. Find your exercise by the client name used in the case, highlight the .bcb file and copy it by pressing Ctrl+C or right-click on the file and select Copy.

4. Open the Educate subfolder within the installation folder (usually C:\BestCase_EDU\Educate\Exercise).

5. Press Ctrl+V to paste in your new exercise. Your exercise will now be available from the exercise selector in Best Case.

NOTE: If Best Case is located on a network such as a computer lab, these exercises will appear for each computer in the lab. If the exercise is homework, the exercise needs to be copied to the Student’s local installation of Best Case by following the instructions, Load a Custom Exercise from the Best Case Student Essentials guide.

Preloaded Student ExercisesThe worksheet instructions provide the required client information for completing each exercise pertaining to certain areas of a bankruptcy petition. Below is a brief explanation of the exercises.

■ Exercise 1 — Voluntary Petition: Identify the Chapter of Filing, Type of Debtor and input the required client data.

■ Exercise 2 — Schedules A & B: Enter the Real and Personal Property information provided into the Schedules.

■ Exercise 3 — Schedules D, E & F: Complete the Secured and Unsecured Creditor claims.

■ Exercise 4 — Schedule C: Choose an appropriate exemption for each property, exemption tables provided.

■ Exercise 5 — Form 7 – Statement of Financial Affairs: Input debtor income, creditor payment information, charitable contributions, losses and pertinent data.

■ Exercise 6 — Schedules I & J and Form 22A Means Test: (Chapter 7 cases) Complete the income and expense information in Schedules I & J, then calculate the means test.

■ Exercise 7— Schedules I & J and Form 22C Means Test: (Chapter 13 cases) Complete the income and expense information in Schedules I & J, then calculate the means test.

■ Exercise 8 — Prepare for Electronic Filing: Use the ECF Wizard to generate PDF files in the ECF Manager for electronic filing.

Send an Exercise to Your Students: 1. Open the Client List window and highlight the exercise you

want to send.

2. From the menu, select File > Send Client to Disk.

3. Select one of the following:

a. Copy to diskette drive A

b. Copy to Other Location

Tip: Select this option to save to a flash drive or email the file through a web-based email program.

c. Attach to Email: A new email message opens from your desktop email program with the exercise attached. The subject line is auto-filled with “Best Case Client: <name>” and the body of the email is pre-populated with the file name and path.

d. Copy to CD Burner D: The exercise is placed in the CD burning queue. On the following screen, select Burn to begin the CD burning process or select Close, to add more files to burn to the CD.

SHARING CASE FILES

Receive a Completed Exercise from Your Students: * If retrieving from Email, save or download the .bcb file from

your email to a temporary location, like your desktop.

* If retrieving from CD or Flash Drive, insert the CD or flash drive into your computer.

1. From the Best Case Client List window, click File > Restore Client From Disk.

2. Click Restore From Other Location to navigate to the location of your saved exercise or to the appropriate drive or directory. Click OK to select your location.

3. From the list of client names, click the check box next to each exercise that you want to import. To select all files press [Shift]+[spacebar].

4. Click Restore. A pop-up window confirms you have successfully imported the exercise(s).

Shortcut: Drag and Drop to Import Files1. Save the exercise you want to import to your desktop.

2. With the Client List open, drag the .bcb file from your desktop to the white space of the Client List.

3. A dialog box appears, confirming the file was imported successfully.

Request students to submit completed Student Exercises to you via an electronic file, then import the file into your version of Best Case to verify the work. Alternately, send a Custom Exercise to your students to import into their local installation.
