Here’s our plan for this week:

This week’s theme is FRIENDSHIP!

Monday 8th June is “National Best Friend Day” where we celebrate the friends that are closest to us. At the moment it’s a little bit tricky to see our friends safely, so this week we are going to write poetry about them! We will be looking at all different types of poetry and you can pick one to do as your final piece.

FRIENDSHIP WEEK- POETRY

Your second activity is to create a topic web of your best friend and use adjectives to describe them. You may want to describe what they look like, what their favourite hobbies are, things you do together and why they make you happy. The more adjectives, the better! You can either use the template on the class page, or you can draw your own!

Today is day 2 of your project. wE HAVE LOOKED AT WHAT MAKES A GOOD FRIEND. NOW WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT DIFFERENT TYPES OF POETRY!Poetry can be written in many different ways. They can be short or long, fun or sad, real or imagined, structured or unstructured, rhyming or not. There is a lot of freedom when writing poetry and because of this, the writer is able to express their thoughts and feelings in very unique ways.

Activity 1: Can you guess the style of poem from its features?

In my magic box, I would put,Three hundred bars of chocolate.

In my magic box, I would put,The sea so I could swim with dolphins.

In my magic box, I would put,A football pitch so I could play footie with my friends.

Sally had a fright, In the dark of night.

As poor old Sally, Had lost her Daddy!

“Oh, where could he be?”She shouted up into the tree.

The she heard a reply,Coming from the sky.

Repetitive Poem!

“In my magic box, I would put,” is a repeated line throughout the poem. You did one very similar in school!

Rhyming Poem!

This type of poem contains rhyming couplets. What do you notice about the words that are highlighted?

Acrostic Poem!

This type of poetry uses the letters in the title. This poem is about SCHOOL. You can either use words to sentences that start with those letters to create your acrostic poem!

BUT there’s a few things you need to remember when writing poetry...

WHEN YOU ARE WRITING POEMS, YOU MUST REMEMBER YOUR PUNCTUATION AND VERSES!

What punctuation can you see here? Is the same punctuation used in every verse?

Most poems have VERSES which are small paragraphs which end in a form of punctuation. The magic Box poem only has three verses, but has commas, full stops and capital letters on each line. Make sure to remember this when trying out yours!

RHYME

Rhyme is used a lot in poetry to create a “flow” of writing. Rhyming words sound the same as each other and are often on the end of the sentence!

Here are some examples for you to have a listen to! You might get some inspiration from these to create your own poems!

Repetitive Poem!

“In my magic box, I would put,” is a repeated line throughout the poem!

Rhyming Poem!

This type of poem contains rhyming couplets. Can you hear the words that rhyme?

Activity 2: Pick a type of Poem and create your own! It can be on any topic. Or, if you want a challenge- Try all three! Will you try acrostic? Rhyme? Repetition? We can’t wait to see them! You can write these using a pencil and paper, just make sure to remember to leave a line between verses.

Activity 1: Have a look at these Calligrams and Shape poems. Your challenge is to try and create your own to practice! You could do one on any topic.

SHAPE POEMS THIS WAY

A Calligram is a word or piece of text where the design and layout of the letters creates a visual image related to the meaning of the words themselves.

IDEAS

FOOD ANIMALS CLOTHES SCHOOL NATURE ENVIRONMENT THE OCEAN THE WORLD

This one is a SWAN.

Activity 2: Shape Poems

A shape poem is different to a Calligram. Shape poems use the text to create the shape of what the poem is about! Have a look at the Star Poem and The Whale poem!

Your activity is to now try and complete a shape poem! Make sure your writing is about the shape! You may write a poem about an apple and write it in the shape of an apple. Give it a go! Post on the blog so your friends can see!

Activity 2: Now it’s time to create your own shape poem!

I’d almost forgotten it’s friendship week! Now you’ve had the opportunity to look at different types of poetry, it’s your chance to think about your best friend again!

Activity 2: Now we would like you to have a think about how you would describe your best friend. I would like you to write a small paragraph about why you love them and what they are like! Minimum of 10 sentences. Make sure you use lots of adjectives! Use can either use a pencil on paper, or you can print the template on the class page.

Have a look at miss stanworth’s paragraph about miss foley. Then go to the next page to see some cool templates!

Mrs. Foley is a great friend. She is always there for me when I need help and I even see her on weekends! Mrs. Foley often wears pretty floral dresses and her black OLOG fleece. Mrs Foley is lead of RE which means she is very Holy! She also has a lot of links to Ireland so loves the colour green and loves going there to visit her family and friends. Mrs Foley helps me to be a better teacher and always listens.
