Proven Lead Guitar Speed Drills: Guitar Finger Exercises For Blazing Through Any Guitar Solo You Want! Here are the top lead guitar speed drills for becoming a faster, more impressive lead guitarist! These hand-picked guitar exercises will help you gain the ability to effortlessly blaze through any guitar solo you want, having the strength and speed to pull it off like the pros!

Lead Guitar Speed Drills are exercises that serve the purpose of making you faster, better, and cleaner.

They are repetitive in nature and strictly physical for the most part. Some of them are not meant to sound pretty and musical, but they are physically demanding, which is why they improve your CHOPS! ...your ability to shred!

These top ranked guitar finger exercises are derived from scales, finger patterns, and chromatic runs. They are usually based of some sort of finger pattern that repeats itself in various locations on the neck, making them more effective, easy to memorize, and more playable.

Are you ready to learn how to play any solo by building finger strength and speed?

W H Y S H O U L D Y O U L E A R N L E A D G U I T A R S P E E D D R I L L S ?

Practice makes perfect...but so does finger strength!

When I first decided I wanted to get really fast on the guitar, I started to take guitar exercises like these more seriously. If you put the practice, patience, and perseverance into learning these guitar drills, you WILL become your fastest ever!

When you practice guitar scales, start out at a slower tempo, such as 60 BPM, one that you feel comfortable with. Then increase your tempo by 2 to 5 BPM after fifty or so times through the exercise. Don't stop until you feel like your notes are coming out effortlessly as the direct result of repetition.

This is the secret to building the muscle memory that the pros rely upon for white knuckle speed!

You should play these guitar picking exercises using alternate picking, a metronome, and good practice habits! No T.V., no cell phone, just practice, practice, practice!

T H E M A J O R S C A L E A N D T H E M I N O R S C A L E I N " T H I R D S "This guitar exercise is an all time favorite of many well-endowed shred guitarists! It is perfect for warming up and limbering up your fingers prior to a performance or practice session!

When ascending this pattern, you should start with a downward pick motion. Alternatively, you may start with an upward pick motion while descending the pattern.

This guitar finger exercise is built upon intervals we call thirds. Intervals are part of music theory. You should still learn the drill and benefit from the physicality of it even if you are not very comfortable with music theory. Theory is not required to play guitar speed drills!

This next guitar drill benefits you in a couple of ways. First, it will help you get locked on to a scale or a certain key. Being able to lock on to a scale is necessary for improvisation and soloing.

Second, this is a drill that helps you develop longer fretboard reach by giving your left hand a good stretch. This means that your fingers will gradually learn to cover a wider fret span, giving you access to the most notes on your fretboard!

This particular guitar exercise is written in the key of 'E' Minor. Work up and down each string until you begin to visualize the fretboard map of notes within the key. To practice

other keys, add sharps or flats from the omnipotent Circle of Fifths (again, we are touching on theory here, but if you don't feel comfortable with music theory yet, play through the TABS anyway).

The following scale drill "spills" down the frets in a waterfall-like pattern. The phrase can even be used in guitar solos, because it sounds melodic on its own.

Among all lead guitar speed drills and guitar exercises, the four finger exercise is one of the most effective and easy to learn!

This guitar drill is a basic finger pattern that implements all four of your fingers one at a time using all possible combinations and spans four adjacent frets. Refer to the table below to learn the various finger combinations, then traverse through each string using each pattern separately.

For example, the tablature below shows the combination in the first box (top-left in the table), starting at the first fret using your first finger. For variety, you should go down through all six strings, move up a fret, then use the same combination going UP the strings. Continue the pattern all the way up the neck, then choose a new combination from the table and start over.

All finger number combinations (numbers represent finger numbers, not fret numbers):

Example 4:

Three finger legato runs consist of patterns in which three notes are played per string. The patterns are facilitated using hammer ons and pull offs. Special note for the hammer ons: AIM is more important than sheer force. Aim your left hand fingers precisely and you will achieve the most accuracy.

R I G H T H A N D T E C H N I Q U E : T H E S I X O P E N C H O R D S H A P E SMost of our sweep picking exercises outline a chord by stacking its scale degrees in an arrangement that creates a visual shape on the fretboard, this is commonly referred to in music theory as triads. Training yourself to SEE the shape is the first step to unlocking your awesome sweeping skills.

To make a good sweep pattern on the fretboard, visualize some of the open chords that you already know as movable shapes that go up and down the neck. You will have to make a barre where the open notes would be to fully see the shape.

To really play guitar fast, you will have to memorize only six shapes: three majors and three minors. That's right! Sweep picking only uses just six basic shapes! Easy!

The chord chart below lists all six shapes for sweeping. Memorize them now!

The six Movable Chord Shapes:

S T A R T I N G S M A L L : 3 S T R I N G R A K E SThis first exercise shows little three string versions of the six primary triads listed above, both in their major and minor formats. In the examples, I use E Minor for the three minors and D Major for the three majors.

2 T H I N G S T O R E M E M B E R :Thing 1: Always follow the correct right hand direction which is established below the first bar of each example and continues throughout the pattern.

Thing 2: Whenever you sweep through a pattern, only fret the notes one at a time. Don't just hold the shape like you would a chord. It is very important that you roll through the shape!

In Example 4, we will learn six-string sweeps in all six voicings of both the major and minor arpeggios.

Like the five-string examples, we need to an extra hammer/pull-off note on certain strings to make them more playable and applicable to an "even" time signature.

Pentatonic Blues Licks Made Easy -- Start Learning Lead Guitar Now!The easiest, most effective way to learn lead guitar is with these easy pentatonic blues licks using the popular pentatonic blues scale! This easy scale is one you must know! You can hear it in lead guitar solos all over rock music.

L E A R N T H E M I N O R P E N T A T O N I C S C A L E W I T H S U P E R E A S Y R O C K L I C K S !Although it is called the "blues" scale, the minor pentatonic scale is used just as much in rock music as it is in the blues genre. The addition of the "blue note" to the regular pentatonic scale is where it gets its name.

One of the most appealing characteristics of this popular easy lead guitar scale is that it lends itself to diversity; the pentatonic blues scale was used in solos such as "Stairway to Heaven" and "Freebird", as well as many other recognizable rock and popular songs.

With this scale, you can learn the easiest, most effective lead licks out there!

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 17

Page 18: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

Pentatonic licks are EASY because of the "playable" pattern in which the scale fits perfectly onto the fretboard. You can create many easy lead phrases and licks just from the root position box pattern! As you get more comfortable with this scale, you can extend it up the neck to reach a wider variety of notes and shapes.

Ooga Booga says:

"In the future, you will graduate from basic pentatonic

guitar scales -- although easy pentatonic licks go a long

way! -- to more difficult tricks. But at least if you do,

you will have at that time developed a solid understanding

of one of the most fundamental guitar scales in rock music!"

There are sixteen pentatonic blues licks in this lesson. They are written back to back so that they could be played as a solo if you piece them together in a row. Each lick is one measure long and can be used in a variety of your own guitar solos.

The fretboard for the 'a' minor pentatonic blues scale looks like this:

And here is the root position of this pentatonic blues scale in tablature:

For easy guitar solos, I suggest mixing some of the above repeatable patterns in with the melodic phrases shown below.

Sweep Picking Technique -- The Essential Secret To Shredding Guitar At Blinding Speeds!Sweep picking technique gives you the ability to burn up the fretboard with little effort and fluidity -- learning sweep picking is the essential key to shredding guitar fast! The easiest sweep picking exercise combines common chord shapes with right hand sweeps. It's a simple recipe for shred guitar mastery!

Before diving into our sweep picking exercises, let's go over a few basics. You will learn about:

• Setting your action for sweeping

• Selecting the best string gauge

• Selecting the best pick for shredding

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 22

Page 23: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

• Building basic sweep picking patterns

• Correct finger placement

...Ready? Read on!

S E T T I N G Y O U R F R E T B O A R D A C T I O N - - M A K E I T E A S Y O N Y O U R S E L F !Having high action and trying to sweep pick is like driving a car though molasses...OK, that analogy is a little far fetched, but you get the idea: it's pointless, redundant, and frustrating!

ARNOLD says:

DO US BOATH A FAVOR AND TAKE YOUA ACTION DOWN TO A DECENT

LEVEL FROM WHICH YOU CAN PLAY REAL SHRED GUITARLL!!

There are various methods for testing the precise level of your action. However, I suggest dropping it down a little at a time. After each turn, test every fret for clarity, especially the upper frets. Bend your strings, too. If all your notes sound clear, you're fine. If you hear some dead notes, just raise it back up a quarter of a turn or so.

D O Y O U H A V E T H E P E R F E C T S T R I N G G A U G E F O R S H R E D D I N G G U I T A R ?Strings and action go hand in hand. Fatter strings mean you need slightly higher action to compensate for their larger diameter. As a shredder, you really don't need strings any bigger in diameter than .010s. Most shredders use .009s or .010s.

Personally, I think .009s are too elastic. You are not "cheating" by using thinner strings, though. That is a common unspoken misnomer among guitarists. Stevie Ray Vaughn was known to use HEAVY gauge strings, but he did not regularly execute sweep picking patterns in thirty-second note blasts. It's more of an objective matter of getting optimal guitar setup for shredding than "what your fingers can handle."

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 23

Page 24: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

S E L E C T I N G P I C K T H I C K N E S S F O R B E S T S W E E P P I C K I N G T E C H N I Q U EIn terms of guitar shredding and sweep picking technique, a pick that is too thin will be counterproductive for you because it will bend and flex too easily. Something a little more beefier will facilitate your sweeps. Just avoid paper thin plectrums when learning how to sweep pick. Medium thickness and higher is perfect for this technique.

B U I L D I N G A R P E G G I O S O N T H E G U I T A R - - T H E S E C R E T T O S W E E P P I C K I N G T E C H N I Q U E

I highly recommend learning a little chord theory before setting off onto your sweep picking adventures. It will help you see the shapes you are sweeping, which is an invaluable skill to unlock. To unlock the power of seeing the shape, drill the patterns over and over again until the shape starts to emerge and the veil lifts. You will thank me later. "May the SCHWARTZ be WIT ya!"

C H O R D T H E O R Y I N A N U T S H E L L

The condensed soup version of chord theory is this: chords are made by stacking intervals in thirds. A basic chord is made of three notes: the ROOT, the THIRD, and the FIFTH. Each of these notes are an interval apart. An interval is a measurement of distance between two notes. If you spell out the notes in a 'C' chord, you get C-E-G. Repeatedly stacking these notes on top of each other gives us a BIGGER 'C' chord. Playing through them one at a time is the definition of an arpeggio. Combining arpeggios with SWEEP PICKING is the technique we are about to learn!

V I S U A L I Z A T I O N O N T H E F R E T B O A R D - - T H E M A J O R S H A P EThe first step to seeing involves visualizing. To visualize a shape, pretend to take a common chord, such as the familiar open 'C' chord, UP the frets to a new location. If you treat it like a barre chord and account for the open strings, you end up with a sweep-able shape! This is really all arpeggios for guitar amount to. Easy!

For example, play the open C chord intentionally unconventionally, using THIS EXACT fingering:

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 24

Page 25: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

Now, you have a moveable shape you can take up and down the frets. Like this (shown in the E position and the A position):

Finally, try sweeping this newly unveiled shape in the sweep snippet below. Except for the additional hammer-ons and pull-offs, the sweeps are completely derivative of the above chord shapes.

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 25

Page 26: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

A R E Y O U G E T T I N G I T ?The most common problem with learning good sweep picking technique is lack of practice! It sounds obvious, but it can really hold you back from blazing through guitar solos like the pros!

C O R R E C T F I N G E R P L A C E M E N T A N D L E F T H A N D P E R F E C T I O NWe have already visualized sweep shapes as open chords. However, you should not hold it like a chord when you sweep it. Your left hand should be rocking over the strings as you traverse the pattern. Only press the notes you need as you need them while using the SAME finger lineup that we used on the chord shapes above.

V I S U A L I Z A T I O N O N T H E F R E T B O A R D - - T H E M I N O R S H A P EMuch like we learned the major sweep pattern using a 'C' chord, we will learn the minor sweep picking pattern using yet another familiar open chord shape: The 'A' minor chord.

To properly learn sweep picking technique, use the EXACT fingering seen in the chord diagrams below:

Now try using the minor chord shapes in a sweep picking pattern:

How To Improve Your Alternate Picking -- Master Speed Guitar, Avoid Awful Mistakes, Double Your Picking Speed Now!Your right hand technique is 50% of your ability on guitar! Wondering how to improve your alternate picking? Look no further! Have you ever wanted to achieve speed guitar mastery? Learn how, with essential alternate picking methods sure to double your picking speed in half the time!

R U L E S F O R H O W T O I M P R O V E Y O U R A L T E R N A T E P I C K I N GAlways start your alternate picking sequence with a downward picking motion. Look through your musical pattern that will use alternate picking. Look at the MUSIC NOTES, not the TABS. Are the smallest notes eighth notes? Are they quarter notes? Or are they sixteenth notes?

Getting this information now will determine how you use alternate picking techniques in a manner that will help you get the most out of your speed guitar picking riffs.

If you look ahead and find that the fastest types of notes are sixteenth notes, then you will DOWN pick all single eighth notes, and ALTERNATE pick sequences of sixteenth notes in a row, using a DOWN pick on the down beats and reserving the up pick motion for the "in between" beats.

A L T E R N A T E P I C K I N G C H A R T : F O L L O W T H I S F O R B E S T R I G H T H A N D T E C H N I Q U E A N D G O O D F O R MIf the smallest rhythmic value is a quarter note, you don't need alternate picking at all!

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 27

Page 28: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

If the smallest kinds of notes are eighth notes, use down picks on the numbered beats (1-2-3-4) and up picks on the "ands," BETWEEN the beats:

If the smallest kinds of notes in the phrase are sixteenths, then use down picks on the numbered beats AND the "ands," and use up picks on the "e's" AND the "a's."

The real key to learning how to improve your alternate picking and right hand technique is this: if you subtract any of the notes from the phrase, you still have to maintain the same down/up alternate picking pattern as if the notes were still there!

This is where the TRUE masters of alternate picking and speed guitar technique emerge! When a note is subtracted, you have to MISS the string and PRETEND to perform a picking motion. This resets your direction and maintains continuity throughout the phrase. DOWN where down should be, and UP where up should be.

The perfect way for us to learn this concept is with the galloping horsey riff, a la Metallica, in which the "e" -- the second sixteenth note out of every group of four sixteenth notes -- is removed. If you count sixteenth notes this way:

Best of: Effective-lead-guitar.com Volume 1 28

Page 29: Best of Effective Lead Guitar Vol1

1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a...

...Then it is the e beats that we will remove and thereby MISS the stroke.

Like every rule in guitar, there is an exception to the rule. There is something called economy picking, but we will have a separate lesson for that technique as it falls out of the scope of this lesson. But for now, just know that there ARE cases in which you may forgo the strict alternate picking pattern in favor of ECONOMY picking.

Moore Metal says:

"METAL is also the exception! You are a poser if you can't

use ALL DOWNS on your eighth notes at AT LEAST 208 BPM!

METALLICA uses ONLY DOWNS on songs like 'Master of

This is also a nice warm up exercise to run just before a performance. Loop the exercise until your fingers become exhausted!

Use the finger numbering and picking directions as indicated and you will gradually become more comfortable with awkward patterns involving string changes.

You should know the minor scale and the harmonic minor scale in the keys of 'A' minor, 'E' minor, and 'D' minor. Tabs for these scales are written below in the 'A' position, as they are essential to most neoclassical tabs.

S O L F E G G I E T T O G U I T A R L E S S O N : M A I N T H E M EThe main theme in Solfeggietto lasts four complete measures. This theme is recurrent throughout the Solfeggietto guitar tabs and should be the easiest to memorize.

Learn this theme before moving on!

' B 7 ' T O ' E ' M I N O R S E C T I O NThis next section includes some small sweep picking patterns across the 'Dm', 'G', and 'C' chords. The most important thing to note here is where the downbeat falls, as it can throw you off ! I have marked them with accent marks.

Half way through measure three I have marked some convenient left hand numbers to keep you from getting all tangled up! Also, the finger tapping in measure four helps ease the giant interval leaps a bit. I use right hand ring finger hybrid picking to facilitate the tapping as

well. These special hybrid picked notes are marked with the letter 'A' to indicate right hand ring finger.

' E ' M I N O R S E C T I O NThe 'E' minor section reflects the same pattern we used in the opening theme. Only it has been moved to the E position (open), which means you simply move everything down five frets!

' D ' M I N O R S E C T I O NAgain, the 'D' minor section reflects the pattern used in previous keys. This time only half of the theme is played, but it's played twice in a row. Then, you will get a break from solid sixteenth notes!

Here is their all-star appearance in Solfeggietto! This is the only place where you get a break from straight sixteenths. Make sure you wiggle the sixth string when you hit those half notes!

S O L F E G G I E T T O E N D I N G , P A R T 1The ending reminds me of something Kirk Hammett would have done in the old days of Metallica. It consists of a two string pattern with hammer ons and pull offs. It's kind of a walk-down deal, in which the second string note walks down chromatically where possible. Each pattern outlines a chord. The chord that is outlined is written above the tabs.
