Charles Starzynski of ElliottsNatural Foods on Blue OaksBoulevard in Rocklin has devot-ed his life to helping people livea healthier life. His wife CarsonElliott helped the health foodfamily business grow after herfather started it in 1952.

Starzynski is tired of the

processed food people areforced to consume to their per-il. Today their Rocklin store, oneof three in the Sacramentoregion, offers an alternativePlacer Herald readers have vot-ed the best health food store inthe area.

The way food is manufac-tured, it loses a lot of its nutri-

tion, Starzynski said. We offer

foods that are good for you thatarent packed with high fructosecorn syrup and high starchesfor no reason.

Rubinos Ristorante ownersHenry Carillo and Chris Rubino were blown away by an ava-lanche of awards during thisyears Best of the Best.

They were voted not only thebest Italian restaurant, but bestcaterer, best customer serviceand best place to take a date.

We were totally surprisedand I had no idea we would dothat well, Carillo said. Its been

a great boost in business.Family-owned and operatedRubinos has been at its PacificStreet location since 2007.

They keep their prices com-petitive, but the real draw is thecharm. Veal Scallopini is theirmost popular dish.

We do everything locallygrown and made from scratch,Carillo said.

Carillo said his place standsout because of the intimate set-tings for dinner.

We definitely have a on old-world feel or old-world charm,

Carillo said. We have booths soits a great place to take a date.

Carillo said hes seen guys getdown on one knee and pop thequestion and hes always excit-

ed his restaurant will stay in thehearts of lovers forever.

Its totally awesome to see aproposal, Carillo said.

The restaurant has also

turned heads with its websitevoted best local website. Carillo

said web designer and his co-owners nephew Jake Bartkob-sky deserves the credit.

The kid is brilliant and peo-ple comment all the time howcool it is, Carillo said.

The last award makes Carilloreal proud their waitressNatalie Ruhkula voted bestwaitress.

She has a great personality,Carillo said. Instantly, she felt

like family when she came towork for us.Carillo is hoping more cus-

tomers discover the family busi-ness. They just started an all-you-can eat lunch buffet duringweekdays.

We want to get some newpeople to try our food and thenbring a date back for dinner,Carillo said.

We really liked the area andthe people, Granados said.

Embracing his roots, Grana-dos focused the family restau-rant cuisine on the flavors ofMexico City.

Joey Febres ranks winning a

silver medal in the World Gamesfor taekwondo pretty high onhis list of accomplishments. Buthis pride is glowing for the suc-cess of his Fusion Elite Perfor-mance Training Center that wasjust named Best of the Best inthree categories: martial artsfacility, specialty sports storeand specialty store by PlacerHerald readers.

Were trying to be the best in

the area, said co-owner Febres.Its exciting to see the readersand clients supporting that.

Febres co-owns the 10,000-square-foot facility on SunsetBoulevard with his wife DianeMurray, a 1992 Olympic silvermedalist in taekwondo. Theyopened in 2008, but have nearlytwo decades of experience.Febres wanted to take his pas-

sion to the masses but also sawa need to help Rocklin parentsin other ways.

One thing that sets us apart

is the way we bring the familytogether, Febres said. We havethe 3-year-old girl doing dance,brothers doing karate and mom

and dad are doing fitness.Fusion not only specializes in

martial arts, but fitness, dance,music performance and tutor-ing.

When Maddison Bell,24, opened Minx Salonand Spa last October, littledid she know what asplash shed make intown.

Not only was Bellnamed best hair stylist inthe Best of the Best con-

test, but Minx garneredtop awards as best beautysalon, best nail salon andbest tanning salon.

Minx is located in thecharming, old Doc Barnesbuilding on HorseshoeBar Road.

Bell has Loomis tiesthat go back two genera-

tions. Her grandmotherLorna Festersen (neeMatteson), who lives inGranite Bay, graduatedfrom Del Oro High Schoolin 1967 and was a song-leader and homecomingqueen. Bell said that five years ago she moved toLoomis from the SanFrancisco Bay Area and

rented a home on LairdRoad.

I fell in love withLoomis. I knew I either wanted to live here orhave a business here,Bell said.

Sarah English, Minxhair stylist and salonmanager, explained the

salon does not have skin-damaging tanning beds,but instead offers a spray-on tan, custom-preparedby a licensed aesthetician.

Spray tans last from 7to 10 days and the startingprice is $25, but you canget packages, Englishsaid.

It takes about 10 min-utes for the actual proce-dure. Its airbrushed on.

English said the salon

now has seven hair stylistsand a nail technician whooffers manicures, pedi-cures and acrylic nails.Two aestheticians offerfacials, body wraps, wax-ing and spray tans.
