AGENDA
• How to color models
– Methods of coloring files
– Software Programs that support
• ProJet 660 Post Processing
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Common File Types
File Type Color Method
*.stl None (white)
*.ply Vertex
*.wrl Texture
*.obj Texture
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Vertex Color
• Applies color only on a vertex
• Extends along adjacent edges
• Each vertex has an XYZ coordinate and an RGB value
– X, Y, Z, R, G, B
– Ex: 1,3,5 203,17,135
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Vertex Color
• Limited by mesh density
• Need high poly count to have an acceptable color resolution
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Texture Color
• Applies image to a surface
• 3 types
1. Image Projection
2. Image Wrapping
3. Image Mapping (UV Mapping)
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Projection
• Best for Flat objects
• Image projected straight onto the surfaces behind it.
• Image distorts as expected if not on parallel surface.
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Wrapping
• Best for Round objects
• Image curls around surfaces
• Image applies uncontrollably if not on single rotated surface.
#ManufacturingTheFuture
UV Map
• 2D image wrapped around a complex 3D object in a controlled way
• Limited by image resolution

UV Map

Programs
• Freeform • 3DEdit Pro • Blender • ZBrush • Maya • Paint3D • Meshlab
#ManufacturingTheFuture
My choices are...
• 3DEdit Pro – Comes with
purchase of CJP printer
• Blender – Freeware
downloaded from internet

Post Processing – ProJet 660
1. Depowdering 2. Drying 3. Infiltration
– Salt Water – Wax – ColorBond – ColorBond + Wax – ColorBond + Clear Coat – StrenghtMax
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Infiltration: Salt Water
– Only for monochrome (white) models
– Solidifies the surface for enough strength for handling
– Cost efficient and safe
– Architects like this option
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Infiltration: Wax
– Concept modeling and design review
– Enough strength for handling
– Enhances colors
– Cost effective, ecofriendly and safe
– Great option for schools
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Infiltration: ColorBond
– All around option
– Superior strength for most applications
– Advanced color enhancement
– Most commonly used
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Infiltration: ColorBond + Wax
– Presentation models
– Colorbond for strength and color
– Satin finish
– Much less labor intensive than clear coat
#ManufacturingTheFuture
Infiltration: ColorBond + ClearCoat
– Top quality parts
– Colorbond for strength and color
– Range of possible finishes
– Showroom or for a trade show parts
