Why our team chose BEST Robotics• Our school is very active in UIL Academics• When UIL began robotics, we did not want to

get left behind• BEST Robotics is a robust robotics competition

and provides training and many free softwareand hardware resources.• Small school with limited budget, no engineer

on staff• Wanted to grow our CTE program • Easy to form networks, many local schools compete in BEST

Robotics

Before we start• BEST Robotics is not a one approach fits all

competition.

• There are many different ways successful teams develop and grow their programs.

• Our team has competed for four seasons. We hope to provide some insight into how we have built our program as well as talk about some ideas we have used to increase community involvement.

Prior to kickoff• Recruit Team• Establish chain of command and team

organization chart• You may want to add:• Team lawyers – to keep up with

online Q&A• Admin team – to keep up with

attendance, BEST hub paperwork,team budget and sponsors


Prior to kickoff• Ensure team members have

completed tool safety and know how to use 3D printer and CNC• Review BEST Requirements using

BEST Resources• Review bESTology for insight into

upcoming game• Recruit parent and mentor support• Establish team requirements in

approaching sponsors.


Kickoff• Bring as many students as allowed• Have students attend workshops based on

their team assignment• Network with neighboring community

team coaches• Take detailed photos of the game field.

Questions may come up when you begin building select parts of the course at your school• Pick up BEST Kits


In season• Make sure you have designated team

members assigned to: • Project Engineering Notebook (30

points)• Marketing Presentation (25 points)• Team Exhibit and Interviews (20 points)• Robot Performance (15 points)• Spirit & Sportsmanship (10 points)

• Try to stay on BEST recommended schedule provided in BEST Engineering Design Process Powerpoint


In season• Weekly Manager’s Meeting to update the

team schedule, engineering notebook, marketing booth, marketing presentation, spirit, and robot design/fabrication.• Take photos of everything. If there’s not a

photo, you can’t prove it happened.• Document robot performance tests to

include in Engineering Notebook• Stay up to date with the Official Rules Q&A

website

Brand IdentificationMarketing Teams need to create a company with brand identification.

Marketing BoothsOnce complete, consider setting your booth up

in the vicinity of the gym for the communityto tour during home games.


Newspaper ArticlesWritten by students, newspaper articles are an excellent way to spread the word

throughout your community. Schools may post newspaper articles on their facebook pages.


Social Media and Team WebsitesTeam websites may be entered into competition. Websites are great community awareness tools.


BEST Robotics Homecoming FloatOur first year students are responsible for the

design and creation of the team homecoming float.


BEST Robotic CampsHosting a camp is a great way to train your programmers as well as help your students

network with other teams.

BEST Simulink Camp BEST Coding CampBEST Coding Camp for Girls


Parent and Mentor InvolvementOne of the more important additions you can make

to your program. Be sure to reinforce BEST Robotics is a student driven competition.


FundraisingTeam t-shirt sales and concession stand sales prior

to the season can help you raise funds for your team.


Fundraising

Official Team Sponsorships are the most lucrative form of fundraising. Be sure to coach your team on how to approach a prospective sponsor and use a sponsorship form approved by your school.



Team VisitsTeam visits are critical to developing interest in your

program and photos may be used to show communityawareness in marketing presentations and booths.

Working With OthersNetworking with other teams is beneficial. An experienced team may offer

advice, engineering expertise, or allow anotherteam to use the practice course they have constructed.


Marketing Giveaways and Fall FestivalTeams often provide marketing giveaways in their booths.

Fall festival demonstrations are great community awareness events.


Team Kickoff DinnersNo cost way to officially kickoff the season.

We schedule this event the week before the hub kickoff.


Team Community PresentationsWe try to schedule presentations at the same time as

another large community or sporting event is happening at the school


Community Service ProjectsPromote great public relations with the community.
