Dear Go-getter,A warm welcome aboard!India’s domestic air travel demand continued its growth trajectory during June,

passenger traffic grew by 20 per cent to 9.6 million passengers flying during the

month, as against 8.0 million a year ago, according to Directorate General of Civil

Aviation. The domestic air traffic has been witnessing a healthy growth of around

21.5 CAGR % in the past three years. India is emerging as the fastest growing

aviation market in the world, and we look forward in contributing significantly to this

    growth story.

To bolster our network for the upcoming festive season, we have introduced daily,

direct flights between Mumbai and Kolkata. Now, our Smart Flyers can plan their trip

to Kolkata and celebrate Durga Pujo with their near and dear ones. We have also

strengthened our connections from Kolkata with one stop connectivity to Goa, Leh, &

Srinagar whereby our leisure travellers can plan long weekend break.

    We have recently introduced more pre-booking meal options for our Smart Flyers;

the Smart Snack, a scrumptious quick bite along with a beverage for “millennial’s on

the GO” and a premium meal for those with a taste for the world palate. To make our

little flyers the happiest at 30,000 feet, we have also introduced a Smart Kid Meal

bag, a specially crafted meal that comes with a custom-designed aircraft shaped bag.

I am happy to inform you that we have recently upgraded our mobile app for iPhone

and Android, making it easier for customers to make travel plans on the go.

Raksha BandhanKajari Poornima or Rakhi Poornima is celebrated in central and northern India. The day celebrates the love between siblings. Various types of Rakhis are available in markets during this period. Some are plain red or yellow threads with a medallion that sits on the wrist, while others are colourful with glittery beads and sequins. In ancient times, the Rakhi was a sacred thread tied on the wrists of others or one’s own as protection from negative energies. Slowly, the festival began to signify love between siblings and has managed to stay that way till today.Where: Across western and northern IndiaWhen: 7 August

Independence DayIndependence Day is celebrated all over the country but the main events happen at the Red Fort in Delhi. A flag-hoisting ceremony, cultural programmes and other events are routinely held. This year will see many more events, as India marks her 70th year of independence. Look forward to screenings of movies that depict the freedom struggle, exhibitions that showcase the might of the Armed forces and many other events that bring together India’s vast and varied people.Where: All across, and in Delhi When: 15 August

The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat RaceIt is said that 1952 saw an impromptu snake boat race being held in Alleppey for then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru presented the teams with a trophy to convey his gratitude, and thus began this annual event. Around 70 boats participate in this event, which is held every year on the second Saturday of August. Magnificent boats race down beautiful lakes with groups of men rowing and cheering on. Snake boats are a symbol of Kerala’s rich heritage and boat races are one of the many popular attractions of this coastal state.Where: Alleppey When: 12 August

Ganesh Chaturthi, Maharashtra The best place to experience this colourful festival is Mumbai in Maharashtra. Idols of the Hindu elephant god are worshipped by devotees in homes and on streets for a period of ten days after which these idols — of various shapes and sizes — are left to float into

the sea. The idols are carried in winding processions that see devotees singing and dancing to the beat of peppy music. Offerings are wide and varied — from milky sweets and sugary snacks to fritters and sweet bread.Where: Mumbai and MaharashtraWhen: 25 August to 5 September, 2017

Bhandara Festival Khandoba Temple in Jejuri (about an hour and a half southeast of Pune in Maharashtra) sees this beautiful festival where devotees throw huge amounts of turmeric all over the temple. Clouds of turmeric swirl around before settling on the people and the wet earth. Believers also sing and dance in the name of the Lord. The deity is taken out in the noon to be cleansed in a river nearby. Bhandara is performed when a new moon day also happens to be a Monday (Somvati Amavasya). Where: JejuriWhen: 21 August

Goa — most sought-after monsoon destinationTo say that Goa is a popular tourist haunt in the summer is but to stress the obvious. However, what is news is that this state has come up as the most sought-after destination in India even during the monsoon. A survey conducted by online accommodation booking site Hotels.com saw the most number of searches zeroing in on Goa, especially Arpora village, which saw an increase of 91% in hotel searches this year, in comparison with 2016.

Kerala bets big on digitalKerala’s Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran hopes to increase the number of domestic tourists to the state by 50% by 2021. Kerala Tourism has made increasingly good use of digital marketing platforms to reach out to domestic and international tourists. The state is one of the most popular destinations for both domestic and global travellers in India, with Munnar being declared the best destination in Kerala earlier this year.

Airbnb teams up with MaharashtraThe world’s largest community-driven hospitality service Airbnb has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra (Department of Tourism and Culture) to boost tourism by creating great travel experiences for domestic and international tourists in Maharashtra. The move includes expanding the quality of homestays and organizing workshops to train hosts in observing good standards of hospitality. In exchange for MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation) enabling hosts to enlist on Airbnb, the company will share a portion of its booking revenue with MTDC. The agreement is a unique one and promises a great future ahead for both the state and the hospitality service.

Lemon Tree’s big plansDespite demonetisation woes, The Lemon Tree Hotel Company intends to open eight or nine

Stand outside what was once an ordinary garden in Amritsar, and there is no evidence of the bloodiest massacre unleashed by the British forces.  Walk inside to see the well within this memorial and the bullet-riddled walls that have been cordoned o . Peer inside the well and you may be assailed by images of bodies of the people who jumped in to save their lives, but drowned instead. It is easy to see why Dyer chose to open re: there is only one exit. The memorial is being restored for April 13, 2019, when people will congregate to pay their respects to those who were killed here exactly a century ago.

Actually, the border is nothing more than steel wires running through elds and villages. Attari is just a regular Punjab village, except for the border, which sees action of a di erent kind. People from the two countries gather for the evening ‘Beating the Retreat’, or the ag-lowering ceremony, a high-decibel event marked by high-kicking and foot-stomping by the Border Security Force personnel on the Indian side and the Pakistan Rangers on the other side.

Clockwise from top: The Independence Day parade on the Attari-Wagah border is attended by over 2,000 people, largely villagers from the Attari village and tourists; The Jallianwala Bagh memorial was designed by American architect Benjamin Polk and inaugurated by President Rajendra Prasad on April 13, 1961

Nehru in Delhi and AllahabadConservation architect Abha Narain Lambah, who restored

Teen Murti Bhawan, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s home in the country’s capital, describes it as a “repository with memories of both the independence struggle and the nation building that followed”. This stately home is a rich archive of photographs, documents, diaries and personal e ects of India’s rst Prime Minister. The bungalow takes its name from the three statues of soldiers from the Indian princely state that stand guard at a roundabout close by. Photographs, newspaper articles, letters and documents spread across two levels of the Bhawan trace Nehru’s childhood, the early days of the Congress Party, and the early years of Independence. A Gothic chamber on the second level recreates the midnight session of the Indian Parliament on August 14, 1947, through a video of Nehru’s speech playing on loop, and through photographs.

Wandering through Anand Bhawan in Allahabad, where Nehru

grew up, is an enticing proposition: peppered across the house are ancient vases belonging to the family, still lled with fresh owers. The imposing library has stu ed leather chairs, and on the shelves are books on the French Revolution, on democracy written by British authors which probably inspired him, as well as a complete set of The Arabian Nights. This library is where the Congress Working Committee often met to discuss their strategies in the pre-Independence era. Colonial-era furniture from Maple & Co in London sits next to charkhas belonging to the family and sarees woven out of coarse khadi. Nehru’s niece, the famous author Nayantara Sahgal, described the crowds climbing up the verandahs after their ritualistic dip in the Ganga-Jamuna con uence during Magh Mela, just to meet him. Also in Allahabad is the Swaraj Bhawan, a bungalow with Italian balustrades, a central courtyard and oral patterned oors, which served as a home to the Nehru family, and which is where Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal’s father, held meetings to form the Indian National Congress.

Sabarmati Ashram, GujaratThe spartan Sabarmati Ashram perfectly captures the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of frugal living and non-violence. The Mahatma’s residence for 12 years, it was from this ashram that he led the Dandi March or the Salt Satyagraha in 1930 to protest against the taxes imposed on salt by the British

government. While Hriday Kutir, the house in which Gandhi lived, exhibits his personal possessions like his now-recognisable round glasses as well as his charkha, a museum designed by architect Charles Correa houses the Mahatma’s message to his countrymen, photographs, letters and quotations as well as archives containing almost 34,000 letters to and from Gandhi. Among the letters is an envelope simply addressed to ‘Mahatma Gandhi, jahan ho wahan, Wardha’ (Mahatma Gandhi, Wherever he is, Wardha). The letter is marked ‘Express Delivery’ and did manage to reach its destination, as is obvious. The ashram, which turned 100 in June this year, is today a haunt for a lot of young people. I have seen them working on their laptops in the lush green grounds of the ashram, feeding the squirrels, strolling through Hriday Kunj, Gandhiji’s house. The 65-year-old caretaker Mani Gandhi told me that several weddings have been solemnised in the Shiv temple within the ashram, especially between young people from di erent castes.

Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Mahatma Gandhi's home for 12 years, was redesigned by the late architect Charles Correa as his memorial and holds most of Mahatma's personal e ects, books and writings, including his charkha

United Co ee House, DelhiBreaking away from monuments and memorials, let one of your stops on this Independence trail be the United Co ee House at Connaught Place, which enjoys cult status due to the sheer political clout it once wielded. This is where comrades, socialists and Congresswallas gathered to discuss politics over steaming cups of co ee in the pre- and post-independence phase. UCH, in fact, has high-ceilings with trimmings of blue, gold murals and Viennese chandeliers. While it has been restored, Akash Kalra, the grandson of the man who built it, says this 75-year-old co ee house continues to look much like it did that many years ago. Lala Hansraj Kalra set up UCH, Delhi’s rst western-style café in Connaught Place, the city’s commercial centre, in 1942. The co ee house was said to be the haunt of

Pa ndit Nehru, Sarojini Naidu and Bipin Pal, besides a host of other leaders.

What makes UCH such a landmark in Lutyens’ Delhi today is its culinary inheritance. It was the rst co ee house to have a multi-cuisine menu — Indian, European and Continental. It was the brand that, perhaps, introduced fusion cooking to Indians. The signature Tomato Fish is a creation of Bengali cooks — the Gomes dadas and the Rosarios — who had mastered their craft in Calcutta’s posh clubs. The sh, along with cheese balls, introduced Indians to subtly avoured cuisine that was never a part of our culinary heritage. Its menu continues to feature Nehru’s favourite Cona Co ee, a black co ee which still retains its characteristic bold aroma and punch, and Keema Samosa, with a strong fragrance of whole spices that have been toasted and bruised.

The recently restored United Co ee House in Connaught Place, among Delhi's rst co ee houses, was an adda for Congress and communist leaders in pre-independence and post-independence India, including Pundit Nehru

The morning sun shed a warm, golden light on everything in its path, especially on the Kalupur Swaminarayan Mandir in the heart of the old city. rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. It was later ruled by the Mughals and the Marathas before becoming one of the major centres of the Independence movement. As a result, the city was home to some exquisite Hindu and Jain temples as well as Islamic monuments.

He ended with a brief outline of the structure of the walk, and our motley bunch

stepped out for a closer look at the temple. It actually seemed rather apt since the temple was a microcosm of the city and the state’s history and encompassed so many influences. It was both imposing and impressive, but it was the myriad influences that were fascinating. Almost 200 years old, it was built in a mix of Indian, British and Mughal architectural styles, and stood on land donated by the British. The facade was filled with beautiful and colourful engravings and sculptures, which continued on the columns, walls, beams and ceiling inside. There were depictions of people and dancers dressed in traditional Rajasthani and Maharashtrian style as well as birds, animals, leaf and plant motifs. There was even a political statement: an

engraving portraying the first Indian war of Independence in 1857.

Despite the constant flow of humanity, it was also a serene and calm place. In contrast, just outside the temple, the streets teemed with humanity. Streets radiated in all directions, crowded with narrow buildings abutting each other. They were filled with pushcarts hawking such eclectic fare as fruits, vegetables, snacks, tea, terracotta lamps and a myriad other things. The guide led us through one of them, deftly skirting passers-by, vehicles and sundry animals.

The street turned a corner, and suddenly we were in one of old town Ahmedabad’s iconic features, the pol. Pronounced p-o-l-e, simply put,

it was a tiny neighbourhood and at first glance, seemed to be without any plan. There were clusters of houses of all sizes and shapes, with narrow streets and passages running off in all directions. At the centre of it all was a courtyard with a temple, a community well and a chabutara or bird feeder. It looked like a world unto itself, self-contained and protected. And just how protected was revealed momentarily.

The guide said Ahmedabad’s pols, each with their own distinct name,

came up sometime in the early 18th century and evolved within communities as a defence structure. They had secret passages and hiding places known only to the people of the pol and were still in use. Typically, when they were established, a pol contained people of the same caste, religion or vocation, but over the centuries the composition had obviously changed, the concept however, lived on. Each pol had distinctive features, which made for a fascinating walk around. At

Lambeshwar Ni Pol, named after a Jain temple, the old wooden doors and carvings were mesmerising. In another, a bright green bird feeder, perched on a column, caught my attention, and I was struck by the ingrained sensitivity towards other creatures.

Hidden in nooks and corners, I also found little shrines and temples, almost like tabernacles, dedicated to various gods and goddesses. At Kharakua ni Pol, literally saltwater well, the motifs were distinctly British and European, indicating the influences that had swept in with colonisation. But I was most fascinated with Kuawalo Khancho, which was filled with houses built in different

architectural styles. So, there was traditional Gujarati vernacular next to Maratha, flanked by colonial and even Persian styles. It was a bit surreal.

If the pols were themselves interesting, they also contained within them interesting structures such as the Kala Ramji Mandir, a 400-year-old temple that looked almost like a house and was among the few haveli mandirs where the temple also doubled as a residence. It looked like a modest house from outside, but inside, there was a small courtyard behind which stood the main sanctorum adorned with elaborately carved pillars and parapets. However, the unique part, and from where it got its epithet, was of the main deity, of Lord Ram in the sitting posture carved in black marble.

Among all the houses, it was the Harkunvar Sethani ni Haveli which stood out. It was an exquisite house with a beautiful

facade, and elaborate wooden carvings on the brackets, pillars and doors. Just a few hundred metres from this house was the Fernandes Bridge, built in the late 19th century by the British under which the city’s large book market was just coming to life. The road under the bridge suddenly opened into a larger road on which stood the old Ahmedabad stock exchange, a regal building with intricate detailed work on the windows and facade.

The road further led to Manek Chowk, the city’s largest market, and it was nowhere near as chaotic and noisy as it would normally be during

the day. Traders were just opening their establishments and vehicular traffic was still a trickle. A flower trader was doing brisk business, while strong aromas wafted from a shop selling spices, condiments and assorted eatables.

The sun was already blazing down despite the early hour, and it was uncomfortably hot. But we had just one last stop and we rounded the corner from the market to enter the sprawling grounds of the mosque. Whatever noise and chaos ruled the streets, however little, fell away inside the compound in the middle of which stood the almost 600-year-old

yellow sandstone Jama Masjid. It was eye-catching with stunning multiple domes, arches and a multitude of pillars with carvings of motifs and patterns.

As the group dispersed and the guide went his way, images and freeze-frames from the previous couple of hours crowded my head. It seemed like I had travelled back in time and across milieus in a couple of hours and had gotten a rare glimpse into Ahmedabad’s soul. It was rich, colourful, and packed with so much history that the UNESCO World Heritage City tag seemed to sit so aptly on its shoulders.

Ahmedabad’s heritage city statusWith a history going back over 600 years, Ahmedabad is among the oldest cities in the country. The walled city was chosen for the UNESCO World Heritage City tag over Mumbai and Delhi. It joins more than 280 cities around the world and is the first Indian city to get this honour. Among the things that might have tipped the balance in its favour are the 25 ASI protected monuments, community neighbourhoods called ‘pol ’, and its association with Mahatma Gandhi and the freedom movement.

The UNESCO describes Ahmedabad as “The walled city of Ahmedabad, founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah in the 15th century, on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river, presents a rich architectural heritage from the Sultanate period, notably Bhadra citadel, the walls and gates of the Fort city and numerous mosques and tombs as well as important Hindu and Jain temples of later periods. The urban fabric is made up of densely-packed traditional houses (pols) in gates traditional streets (puras) with characteristic features such as bird feeders, public wells and religious institutions. The city continued to flourish as the capital of the state of Gujarat for six centuries, up to the present.”

investor, consumer, manufacturer or a service provider, post GST your indirect tax liability would be different from what it was before. As a consumer, you are set to experience change in prices of many commodities and services now. If you are a travel enthusiast, it’s time to reassess your expenses post GST because cost of hotel bills, restaurant charges, drinks, entertainment services and travel insurance may be different now. Let us figure out how GST would impact your travel plans and expenses related to it.

Change in airfareIn the pre-GST period, the service tax on airfare was 5.6% for economy class and 8.4% for business class. Under GST, an economy class ticket will get cheaper with tax at 5%, whereas a business class ticket will be more expensive with new tax rate being at 12%. Airlines may lose the benefit of input tax credit on turbine fuels for which they earlier used to get the Cenvat credit, as now it is kept out of GST. The chances that airlines would increase ticket rates are lower due to high competition in this market.

GST and the travellerHow will GST impact your travel and holidays? Adhil Shetty does the number-crunching.

GST on hotel staysThe GST rate on hotels comes under four slabs. Hotels and lodges with room rent below Rs 1000 are exempted from tax; hotels with room rent between Rs 1000 and Rs 2500 are levied a 12% tax, hotels with room rent between Rs 2500 and Rs 7500 will now be taxed at 18% and hotel with room rent above Rs 7500 would be taxed at 28%. Hotels will also be eligible to get the input tax credit benefit after GST.

Under the previous tax regime, hotels couldn’t get input tax credit across VAT and central taxes, but now they will get it seamlessly. The tax rate varied from state to state due to different VAT rates.

In the pre-GST model, hotels were subjected to VAT, service tax and luxury tax. GST will subsume all the taxes and reduce the tax compliance difficulties for the hotel industry.

If you are planning to stay in an affordable hotel, then you have all the reasons to cheer up because it would be affordable on your pocket too post GST. If your choice is a 3-star hotel, then, too, you may need to pay a lesser amount, as rooms in most of these hotels are priced between Rs 2500 and Rs 7500. If your choice is a 5-star, then the impact could be mixed because such hotels may compensate you in terms of better service.

GST on eating outThe tax implication on the restaurant could reduce the bill that you would need to pay when you are dining while travelling. With the benefit of input tax credit, restaurants may reduce the prices of items. So, while you travel and dine out, you may save some money in comparison to the previous tax system.

GST on drinksWhile travelling, staying hydrated is important. Non-flavoured i.e. plain mineral drinking water is taxed at 18% under the GST system. Alcohol is kept out of GST, but state governments would continue to levy VAT as per the decided rate. Aerated drinks, including soft drinks, would now be taxed at

28%. Similarly, tea and coffee are taxed at 5%, which is lower than the previous effective rate.

Travel insuranceTravel insurance under the GST will be 3% higher. Earlier, there was a 15% service tax, but now GST will be charged at 18%.

Credit cardsEarlier, 15% service tax was charged on some of the credit card services such as on the processing charge, interest, issuance, renewal, etc. Now, GST at 18% would be charged. So, if your total monthly service tax payment used to be around Rs 100, then under GST it would be Rs 103 i.e. 3% higher.

Phone and internet billPhone and internet bill is an important component when you make a travel plan. Earlier, phone and internet services were at 15% service tax, but under the GST it is taxed at 18%. As a prepaid customer, if you used to get Rs 839 on a recharge of Rs 1000, then under GST you’ll only get Rs 822.

Cab bookings to cost lessCab bookings will cost you marginally less post GST, as the tax rate has come down to 5% from the previous rate of 6%.

    GO PASSION | PLANE-SPOTTING

Just plane lovePlane-spotting is a growing hobby in the country. We speak to two Mumbaikars who

exemplify the passion behind this engaging, fun hobby

Just as there are people passionate about cars or watches, there are aviation enthusiasts who take their passion a notch higher, known as planespotters. Planespotters, a small but growing community of aviation geeks, often found with cameras in and around the airport to catch a glance of aircraft and with the latest aviation news at their fingertips.

Among these are Bhavya Soni and Utkarsh Thakkar, who at a very early age became drawn to airplanes. Soni says “The window in my study room at home overlooked the approach path for Runway 27 at the Mumbai airport. That’s where it all began.”

Soni, who instagrams at @planepictures_india, has over 22,000 followers and began capturing planes with a mobile phone camera has now set his sights on becoming a pilot.

Like him, Thakkar, has turned to planespotting as a hobby. His love for airplanes began when he would accompany his father in and around his residential complex to watch aircraft taking off and coming into Mumbai. These included the arrival of jetliners such as the Boeing 777, Airbus A380 or aircraft with special livery. Ask him any questions about any airline and he would quip with an answer that will baffle even airline veterans with great confidence.
