When minyanim resume, will we be obligated to make up all of the Torah readings we have missed?

There has been great disagreement about this question. Aside from the shortcomings of the human attention span and the

safety of being in close proximity to other people for an extended time, it is unclear that such a make-up is even

necessary.

Four reasons are offered for exemption from all or part of the missed readings:

1) The weekly Torah reading may be considered a communal obligation, and not a personal one. Therefore, if no

minyan met on Shabbat, then there was no obligation to read.

2) Each Shabbat is linked to a designated reading, so that when a minyan is restored, we do not have any obligation

to read the missed readings.

3) The weekly Torah reading was designed for only one or two Torah portions. Therefore, the maximum number of

portions to be read on a given Shabbat is two.

4) The Torah reading for a particular Shabbat is linked to just one chumash, and not the entire Torah. Therefore, one

may not read from more than one chumash of a particular Sefer Torah.

Classically, all four of these points have been debated. Today’s halachic authorities continue this debate, and so:

Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, and Kollel Eretz Hemdah, believe that we reject all of the aforementioned

exemptions and limitations. Shuls are obligated to make up the missed readings, even across chumashim.

Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon, Rav of Alon Shvut South, contends that we are obligated to make up missed readings,

and that we may read more than two portions on a Shabbat. However, he supports the fourth point, that we may

not read from more than one chumash.

Rabbi Hershel Schachter states that shuls may rely on the lenient views and not make up the missed readings, but

those who wish to make them up may do so – even by spreading them out over multiple Shabbatot. The rule

which permits adding aliyot on Shabbat also permits adding unnecessary readings. However, we may not read

from more than one chumash of a particular Sefer Torah.

Rabbi Asher Weiss believes that shuls must rely on the lenient views and not make up the readings; he contends

that a minyan may not perform unnecessary readings.

The mara d’asra will announce the policy of BAYT closer to the time of re-opening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

On behalf of the outgoing Executive and Board of Governors I want to wish you and your families a safe and

healthy Shavuot. It is hard to believe that we have been in lock down since just after Purim, and it is amazing

what our Rabbis and office team as well as many volunteers have done in terms of online classes, shiurim,

programs as well as volunteering to do shopping and calling members in particular our seniors.

The shul throughout these weeks has exemplified an important message of Shavuot, that of Chesed - of loving

kindness which is very much the theme of Megillat Ruth, and we have to thank Rabbi Korobkin for his

leadership , who together with Rabbi Spitz have spearheaded this amazing response. Sadly we remain closed

for Shavuot, even for services in the parking lot, and will do so until the Emergency Regulations are lifted.

Currently they are in place until June 9. We ask you to pay attention to the continuing requirements set down

by the Government, in particular that no large gatherings are permitted, and that groups are limited to a

maximum of FIVE people only, and of course continue to practice social distancing when out and about.

At our last Board Meeting in April, the Board approved the establishment of a task force to advise the

Executive and the Board on the measures that will be needed to deal with the financial challenges facing the

shul .The task force under the leadership of Chuck English comprised nine shul members with deep financial ,

legal management and communal experience. They have recommended a number of proposals that are being

reviewed by the Executive and the Board , and the steps that will need to be taken in the coming months that

will set the priorities for the incoming Board and Executive who will take office on June 7. I want to to thank

Chuck and the members of the Task Force for their diligence and devotion in producing such a comprehensive

and detailed document in 3 weeks that will be the blueprint for securing the long term sustainability of the

shul. Full details of the plan will be shared with the Kehilla in the coming weeks.

I want to thank the outgoing members of the Executive and Board who will be stepping down after giving of

their time and energy to the many facets of shul life they have been involved with. A new Board and

Executive will take office on June 7 at the AGM , and with the many challenges facing the world in general

and the Jewish Community in particular , I am sure you will join me in wishing them well in their delibera-

tions, and in taking the actions needed to secure the long term future of the shul.

The shul has risen to the many challenges posed by the pandemic, and going forward, as I have indicated ,we

have major decisions to make, but this is no different to any shul or Jewish Communal organisation in Canada

and elsewhere. Together as a Kehilla and the wider Jewish Community we can meet the challenges facing us ,

and hopefully soon we can look forward to being together in Shul to celebrate simchas, as well as being able

to comfort each other in times of sadness.

DIVREI TORAH:

By Keira Diamond: Before Matan Torah Har Sinai was just brown and plain. But on Matan Torah all of a sudden the flowers

and leaves came and it was full of pretty flowers. And other mountains said the Torah should be given on

me, I’m better than Har Sinai - I’m taller, I’m prettier, I can reach from side to side - all of the mountains

said that. Hashem picked Har Sinai because all of the other mountains were saying “I’m better” and Har

Sinai wasn’t bragging - she was sitting there sadly and crying and davening. And on Matan Torah

Hashem made Har Sinai covered in flowers and so beautiful! I think Hashem made a great decision be-

cause Har Sinai teaches us we should just daven to Hashem and if someone else gets something else that

you wanted don’t be jealous - thats one of the 10 commandments. This year if we can’t celebrate to-

gether, then maybe we can try to zoom with friends before and share the chag together. I want to wish

everyone a Happy Shavuot!

Since Pesach I have been learning Pirkei Avot with my Saba on the computer. I want to share the first

Mishna - Moshe received the Torah on Har Sinai and gave it to Yehoshua. Yehoshua to the elders, the

elders to the prophets and the prophets and to the great Rabbis. They said 3 things - be careful in judge-

ment, teach a lot of students and make a fence for Torah so you always have it in your heart. Pirkei Avot

is about getting the Torah and passing it down and down to the new generations. I think that the most im-

portant pasuk in the Torah is “Breishit bara elokim et hashamayim v’et ha’aertz” because most people

have other Gods and don’t believe in Hashem. I think he created the world to give the Torah and he

needed people to do so. Now that we have the Torah we have to continue to pass it on like it says in

Pirkei Avot. Happy Shavuot!
