Principals ReportAllan Dueck

We are grateful to all ouralumni and friends and toGod for the many gifts wereceived during the lastyear. I would like to touchon five areas where we havebeen especially fortunate.

First, Bethany has contin-ued to excel in academicperformance. Last year we had three National MeritScholars in our high school. We have consistentlygenerated an exceptional rate of National Merit Schol-arsmore than five times the national average. Inaddition, Bethany has won four state championshiptitles in a row at the Hoosier Academic Superbowl.

Second, throughout our entire 47-year history,Bethany has continued to have high quality teachers. Our teachers have not only excelled academically, butthey have also been mentors to studentshelping themexplore and grow in Christian faith and develop astrong sense of values.

An example of our high quality teachers is middleschool mathematics teacher Ron Kolb-Wyckoff, whomBethany named Teacher of the Year in 1999-2000. Ronis an expert in problem-solving math, which helpsstudents conceptualize and understand mathematicsrather than focusing on rote memorization. He hasbeen teaching at Bethany Christian Middle Schoolsince its beginning four years ago.

After having taught at Bethany for 15 years, MarisaYoder was away on service leave in 1999-2000. Theleave allowed her to research areas in biology andprovide leadership in environmental education for herdenomination. We are pleased to welcome Marisa backthis fall. She will be teaching two new courses, one ofthem a direct outcome of her leaveEco-topics, anelective for advanced upper level students to design andimplement a class project that seeks to improve care forthe environment in the local community.

Third, in the past 18 months Bethany has made aconcerted effort to tighten our relationship withsupporting congregations and with the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference. Bethany usesChrists life and teachings as understood by the Menno-nite Church as a guide for the organization, manage-

ment, and activities of the school, for the personal livesand relationships of faculty and staff and their interac-tions with students, and for what is taught.

This past spring we again hosted a high school Spiri-tual Life Week. For the second consecutive year mem-bers of the faculty planned the event, and this year astudent worship team did a fine job of leading oursinging. Many students experienced a new or renewedcall to follow Christ. We are privileged to help guideour students to Christian faithfulness.

Fourth, in 1999-2000 we experienced the highestenrollment in Bethanys history! With 95 students inthe middle school and 250 in the high school, BCSsenrollment jumped more than 15%up to 345 stu-dents as compared to 299 in 1998-99. Notable achieve-ments were the expansion of the middle school to fiveclassestwo sixth grade, one each of seventh andeighth, and one combined seventh and eighthand theenrollment of the largest frosh class (68) in recent years.A portable classroom and new restrooms were added toaccommodate middle school growth, while high schoolfacilities were significantly stretched. Bethanys secondhighest enrollment occurred in 1965-66, when 307students were enrolled, while the third highest enroll-ment was 299 in 1998-99.

And finally, we are grateful for the tremendousfinancial support we received in 1999-2000. As boardchair Wes Bontreger notes in his report, private gifts toBethany increased by 34%. We are indebted to themany Bethany alumni and friends for their generousphilanthropic support.

We at Bethany value the privilege of working inpartnership with home and church to provide Christianeducation of the highest qualityto equip young peoplefor Christian discipleship.

Board Chairs ReportWesley J. Bontreger

Thank you! We are verygrateful for the tremendoussupport we received in1999-2000. Bethanyachieved several milestoneslast year, thanks to yoursupport.

In 1999-2000 BethanyChristian Schools enjoyedanother very successful financial year. Strong endow-ment and contribution income, careful management ofexpenditures, and expanding enrollment allowed us tobalance the budget for the fifth year in a row! Therecently completed audit shows that support exceededexpenditures by $394,000 on a total budget of $2.4million. It is important to note that $350,000 of thesurplus was endowment gain, which significantlystrengthens Bethanys financial position but provideslittle immediate cash.

In addition, our endowment has nearly doubledduring the last five years, rising from $964,000 fiveyears ago to $1,841,000 as of June 30, 2000. Also, ourdebt has declined from $697,000 to $442,000 duringthis same time period. Due to your help and help frommany others, Bethanys financial situation has dramati-cally improved as we enter the new millennium.

We are very grateful for the tremendous financialsupport we received last year. Total private gifting rosefrom $411,000 in 1998-99 to$552,000 in 1999-2000, a34% increase. This is one ofthe strongest increases inmany years. We are espe-cially gratified that gifts fromvarious Mennonite congrega-tions rose from $136,000 in1998-99 to $163,000 in 1999-2000. We are heartened bythe strong congregationalsupport we received.

We are also workingdiligently to be more sensi-tive to meeting the needs ofour community and ourstudents. We commissioned

a Feasibility Study Task Force to address various issuesidentified in a capital campaign feasibility study in thespring of 1999. This study examined the possibility of amajor capital campaign to fund much-needed middleschool classrooms and related facilities.

One outgrowth from this study was the need tofurther involve the community and seek more adviceand input. After careful review and study our boardagreed to form an Advisory Council composed of bothMennonites and persons from other denominations.

The following friends have agreed to serve on theAdvisory Council: Jim Boyts, Bertha Bontrager Rhodes,Kevin Deary, Lovina Rutt, Eldon Heatwole, KaySchrock, Sherm Kauffman, Ora Troyer, GoldieLambright, Terry Troyer, Bob Miller, Alan Weldy, SueMiller, Daryl Zook, Fred Ramser, and Maxine Zook.Serving ex officio are development director SusanGingerich and principal Allan Dueck, while consultantMichael Laudick provides counsel.

The Advisory Council will hold three meetings eachyear, the first of which took place on September 7.Establishment of the council is enabling Bethany tobroaden its ties to the constituency and draw peoplewith diverse gifts and community connections into theschools work. The board looks forward to receivingadvice and input from the Advisory Council.

Again, thanks for your tremendous support forBethany Christian Schools. We hope to build on oursuccesses in the new school year.
