To help new Dubai residents get to grips with the city’s education system, we ask a principal, a teacher and a parent to provide a rounded view.

Your kids need a whole heap of stuff to start the new term, so we’ve cherry-picked the best of the city’s school-related stores where you can go to buy it all.

We check out celebrity favourite Kidville, a new fun-filled kids’ centre in Jumeirah Beach Residence where the emphasis is on learning through play – and lots of it!

...to the Autumn 2010 issue of Better Education, designed for parents in the UAE. We have compiled this guide as a solid base of reference to help you make an informed decision about which of the UAE’s nurseries, schools and universities are best for your children. For further research on those schools based in Dubai – both state and private – we recommend a visit to khda.gov.ae, where you can search for reports from the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB), who grade each one from outstanding through to unsatisfactory.

How This Guide WorksWhen we devised this guide it was our aim to make it as user-friendly as possible, so that the information is easily accessible. As such, the schools section is broken down first by the emirate they’re in, then the curriculum they teach. The university section is broken down by emirate, then alphabetically, with an overview of each provided. We wish you luck in your search and hope you find the perfect place for your child!

Moving to a new country can be a daunting enough prospect without the worry of where your children will go to school. To help answer your key questions on the subject, we asked a principal, a teacher and a parent for their thoughts and advice.

The Principal Delice Scotto is principal at American Academy for Girls.

How does the standard of schooling in Dubai compare to that in other developed countries and what are the advantages and disadvantages of a UAE education?

The quality of schooling in Dubai has been a hot topic for several years. I believe the concern has been that students who completed their education at a school in Dubai were, in some cases, not as competitive as students from other developed countries. In the last two years those concerns have diminished as the local regulators - KHDA - have put educational benchmarks in place, spending a considerable amount of time ensuring that the schools meet these exact standards. Schools are being evaluated based on the quality of their curriculum, the

quality of teaching and learning in the school, strength of the school leadership, and the students’ personal and social development. These are the same kinds of standards that good schools throughout the world are expected to meet. This level of accountability assures parents of those studying in the UAE that their child will have the opportunity to be competitive with students in other developed countries. Students in the UAE also have an opportunity to experience the rich Arabic culture, traditions, and language. I do not see any disadvantages to studying in here. I believe it is a fabulous experience for a student to be exposed to individuals of other cultures and backgrounds. As a parent, I feel that the experiences my daughter gained while studying abroad were responsible for much of her professional success.

The Teacher Louise Allen is coordinator at The Children’s Garden Jumeirah.

How do schools here help children who are new to the country settle in?

The Children’s Garden is a pre-school and we have a very smooth transition period here where we recommend children to attend for a shorter period than usual in their first week – after a couple of days they usually want to stay all day! We find that play really helps a child settle into a new school environment and, of course, the teacher needs to be trained for this. With that in mind, it’s best to find somewhere that places considerable emphasis on creativity and art. This means that even children who don’t speak the

language of instruction can have fun and express themselves effectively in ways they can be proud of.

Parents can help too, by getting involved in school events or as a class representative. Here at The Children’s Garden, mothers may also choose to offer extra curriculum programmes for us to incorporate in to our range of afternoon activities. Beyond pre-school, you’ll find that many schools in Dubai encourage parents to take an active role in the school community.

The Parent Sue Callaghan is a mother of two who moved to Dubai in 2004.

What advice would you give to parents who are new to Dubai and are trying to select their kid’s school?

Choosing a school is a highly personal process which will be affected by a range of factors. If you’re an expat and think you might return to your home country – or move elsewhere with your children – before the end of their school career, or if you think they might go to university abroad, you’ll need to choose a curriculum that will be recognised in that country. Luckily, most major curricula are covered in Dubai because of its international population. Sending your children to an international school can be a wonderfully enriching experience for them because they’ll get to mix with peers from all over the world – plus the extracurricular offerings tend to be first-rate (if a little exhausting!).

You’ll need to consider the fees and location too, which will vary according to individual

preferences. Popular schools can be very oversubscribed, so get your child on the waiting list as soon as possible.

There’s quite a big age gap between my two children so choosing their schools provided very different experiences. Just a few years ago, there was little information available and you had to rely on word of mouth and your own perceptions of the school. However, 2009 brought something of a breakthrough because for the first time, schools were given an official ranking (from unsatisfactory to outstanding) by the Dubai School Inspections Bureau, a unit of the KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority Dubai). The process has been repeated in more detail this year and it’s an invaluable source of information for parents.

Personally, though, I think it’s important to go and visit as many schools as possible with your child. Meeting the staff and walking around will tell you a great deal, and the feel of a school will play a significant role in your final decision.

Better Education Guide Autumn 2010Fun time

Kidville’s New York branches are where a long list of celebrities – Brad and Angie, Madonna and the Seinfelds among them – take their kids for an innovative mix of super-fun classes. Now in Dubai, we caught up with franchise owners Doug and Monica Malhotra to discover all about Kidville’s charms.

What prompted you to open Kidville in Dubai? We took our own child to Kidville in New York, and just loved it. What we liked most about it was the fact that the company’s standards are so high and are always upheld – that applies to everything from safety to cleanliness and customer service: from the moment your child steps through the door, he or she will be greeted by name.

What’s the big idea of Kidville? Our philosophy is vey much to make learning fun. The way we teach really depends on the individual child. We have classes which number up to a maximum of twenty kids and each one has a minimum of two or three teachers; so there is a lot of attention on each and every child. This way, we can focus on what it is that makes that child tick, what perks him or her up

and what interests them. The result is a unique learning experience for each and every child. Child development and child enrichment are the most important aspects of what we offer.

You say that the way you teach depends on the individual child. How does that work in a class environment? The way we teach changes depending on the age group of the class. We cater from babies – the youngest we have at the moment is four-months-old – up to six years and every class focuses on a specific age group, for example, 18 to 24 months. We put together age-appropriate activities and make sure that the toys are suitable, and even if the same toys are used in different classes, we’ll change the focus of how that toy is used. These are subtle variations that make a major difference to what the child experiences.

The kids are alright

BE Kids are alright.indd 8 8/9/2010 9:39:38 PM

Page 11: Better Education_August'10

9

How do you think Kidville differs from a traditional nursery? We encourage parents (or their child’s carer) to participate with their kids, to join in the classes and to enjoy them. It’s a lot of fun playing with your kids and at Kidville you’re given the chance to do just that, to bond with them while they learn and experience it all. Also, the way you consume our services is a bit like at college, when you choose your electives and plan out your own curriculum. Here, the parent gets to decide what their kid learns. One of the other key differences is that we don’t offer a drop-off service until the child is aged two and a hafl to three years.

Do you think it can be used as an alternative to a nursery? It depends solely on whether the parent feels that’s the case or not. My own daughter comes here as I didn’t choose to put her in nursery. At the same time, we have parents who do both. Everyone has their own vision for their child so it’s all about what works for them. Every parent has to be comfortable with what they do.

You’ll find Kidville at Rimal 5, Jumeirah Beach Residence. It’s open from 9am to 6pm, seven days a week. In addition to a wealth of classes, it offers a salon, boutique, café and playspace. Call 04 440 1220 or visit www.kidville.com

You’ll find an inventive selection of brilliantly-named classes on offer at Kidvillle, which range from Big Muscles for Little Babies to Toddles in Tutus.

What is ADCB Ambition Loan for Education?ADCB’s Ambition Loan for Education is the only product in the country designed specifically to fund your education. Whether you want to study here or abroad, it brings the best institutions within the reach of you or your child, meaning you don’t have to settle for second best.

Who is it designed for?The Ambition Loan for Education is designed for both working professionals looking to pursue further education and parents wishing to finance their child’s studies. It can be used to pay school or university fees.

How much can I borrow?Student finance is currently offered for amounts between AED10,000 and AED150,000, which can be repaid in periods of between 6 and 48 months.

Does the loan have to be spent in schools and universities in the UAE?No, ADCB can send funds to educational institutions around the world.

How do I qualify for the loan? You must be a UAE resident with a minimum of three months in your current job, and a minimum salary of AED8,000 per month.

Can my loan be pre-approved? For the loan to be finalised we need to see an offer letter or invoice from the educational institution. However, we can tell you if you’re eligible and how much you can borrow before you’ve decided where you want to study.

How does the ADCB Ambition Loan for Education differ from a personal loan? The Ambition Loan for Education has been

Looking to invest in your own or your child’s education but not sure how to pay for it? Here’s what you need to know…

ADCB2.indd 10 8/9/2010 9:36:32 PM

Page 13: Better Education_August'10

designed specifically to fund education. The money is paid directly to the educational institution, the loan is unsecured, meaning there is no collateral, and there is no need for a salary transfer.

Why has ADCB launched this new loan?ADCB aims to unlock ambition, and there is no greater enabler of this than education. By acting as a driver of education we are helping not just the people of the UAE, but the UAE itself.

“We want to be seen as a responsible institution which helps people to achieve their ambitions,” says Rahul Unny, Vice President and Head of Unsecured Loans at ADCB. “The Ambition Loan for Education has been designed to ensure that finance, or rather the lack of it, does not get in the way of the higher education aspirations of any meritorious student.”

Why does ADCB feel it’s so important to invest in education?Education is a cause that perfectly fits in the bank’s corporate social responsibility initiatives. ADCB has a longstanding commitment to developing the UAE’s human resources, and promoting education is a great way to drive economic development. As Mr Unny says: “We constantly endeavour to uphold the educational development in the UAE to embody the Government’s plan to build the next generation of students, enabling them to take part in the evolutionary process of the UAE.”

How do I find out more?Contact ADCB by texting the word ‘Eduloan’ to 2626 or by visiting www.adcb.com.

Tell us what sets Jumeirah Baccalaureate apart from other Dubai schools? Our tremendous resources. Jumeira Baccalaureate School is set on an eight-acre garden campus in the heart of Jumeira 1. Not only can we offer outstanding teaching here, but sports and performing arts facilities too. Our innovative and holistic approach to language teaching will also set us apart.

Can you tell us about your teaching staff? There is around 30 staff at the school, includingteaching assistants, who are predominantly madeup of Western expats. Our Head of Primary School, for example, is Susan Carpenter, who was aHeadteacher in the UK before she joined Taaleem’sDubai British School in 2008, and then JBS in February 2010. Her teaching style and love of children hasearned her the respect and admiration of students, colleagues and parents alike.

What will students learn at JBS? We will offer a curriculum that’s unique to the city.It combines the International Primary Curriculum(IPC) in KG to grade five, followed by the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme in grades six to 10, with an optional

elective IGCSEs. Finally will be the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for grades 11 to 12.

How many children do you anticipate there being in each class? When we open next month, it will be with classes from KG1 to grade 4. There will be maximums of 20 students in KG 1, 22 in KG 2 and in the rest of the school there will be 25, all with teaching assistants. In September 2011, JBS will be a fully fledged KG to grade 12 school.

Will there be a variety of nationalities attending? There will indeed. We will have a student body that’s very typical of an international school, with upwards of 25 nationalities. While English will be the primary spoken language throughout the classes, JBS is dedicated to offering first and second language programmes in French and Arabic to all of its students.

Is there still time for parents to enroll their children? Yes, they can do so either through a personal visit to the school or via our website www.bschool.ae. We can also arrange for parents to meet key members of staff at our regular coffee mornings.

While Germany may be best known for its football clubs, cars, and precision engineering, it is also home to some of the oldest universities in Europe. In fact, it’s the world’s third most popular destination for international students. Its world-class engineering degrees, its excellent medical education, and the close integration of theory and applied learning are only some of the points that have been drawing in students from all over the world. For students from the UAE, the way to Germany has become much easier, with many international degree programs now offered in English. Parallel German-language courses enable participants to acquire and develop their German language

skills and make the most of their stay. Furthermore, the country has been included in the destinations of MOHESR’s government scholarship program for Emirati nationals since 2009. International applicants, by contrast, are attracted by the high quality of life and the excellent value for money found in its educational system and beyond. Finally, applying for a university degree in a foreign country need not be daunting: at its Information Centre in Abu Dhabi, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides advice and orientation to applicants throughout the GCC.

DAAD is an association representing 370 German universities (ic.daad.de/abudhabi/).
