Wynnum Health Service Celebrating 36 years of care

Wynnum Health Service on Whites Road, Lota has served the Wynnum-Manly community well for 36 years. However, the building is at the end of its design life, with extensive maintenance costs.

So that we can continue providing high quality care to everyone in the community, we are opening the state-of-the-art Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa, located just 3km away, in an easy to access part of Wynnum West with free parking and major bus routes outside the new building.

The new Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa will open from Tuesday, 24 October 2017.

We’re making some exciting changes to the public health services for the Wynnum-Manly community, including opening the new Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa.

The new health centre, the services it offers and the services available across the community have been designed to meet the needs of the growing community, both now and into the future.

They have been developed in consultation with local people, health care professionals and community groups.

Services available nearby in the local community (from late October 2017):

• General beds – available in the purpose-built Pandanus ward at Casuarina Lodge next to the new Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre or at home through Metro South’s Hospital in the Home (HITH) service.

• Palliative Care – this service will be offered in two versions: being cared for in a nearby residential aged care centre or in your home, both with specialist care from Metro South Health clinicians.

Services available inside Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa (from 24 October 2017):

• 24-hour Primary Care Centre

• BreastScreen

• Oral Health (Dental Clinic)

• Specialist Outpatient Clinics (including telehealth)

• Addiction and Mental Health

Setting a new standard for community health care in Wynnum and Manly

Meeting your health care needs

Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa is a health hub in the heart of your community. It includes a range of new and expanded services, plus it means critical health services remain nearby in the local community and the return of 24-hour Primary Care.

The new health centre is modern, state-of-the-art and provides a welcoming, peaceful environment with landscaped gardens and purpose-built gyms and consultation and therapy rooms.

Did you know?

The name Gundu Pa is a combination of two words in the local Jandai language meaning ‘medicine stones place’ and was suggested by Winnam Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation.

24-hour Primary Care CentreThe 24-hour Primary Care Centre is your health care back up when you have a minor injury or illness and you cannot get an appointment with your regular GP – for example, in the night if your GP does not offer an after-hours service. The Primary Care Centre treats adults and children for less urgent conditions, such as:

Fever, coughs, cold Infections, rashes

Minor cuts, burns, scalds Strains, sprains

Minor eye issues Toothache

Earache

Your health care options: Less urgent conditions

1 See your GP

Health concerns, minor injuries and illnesses are best dealt with by your regular GP, who can give you advice based on knowledge of your health history.

2 Visit the 24-hour Primary Care Centre

You can visit the Primary Care Centre without an appointment, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The centre is designed to treat less urgent illnesses and injuries, such as those listed on the left.

Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa 24-hour Primary Care Centre is located at 20 New Lindum Road, Wynnum West, 4178.

When in doubt, call 000. This is the safest and fastest way to access help in an emergency.

2 Visit an Emergency Department

IMPORTANT: The Primary Care Centre is not an Emergency Department. The closest Emergency Departments are at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Redland Hospital.

BreastScreen

EXPANDED SERVICE

The BreastScreen Queensland service at the new Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre uses the latest screening technology and is designed to fit around your busy family life.

We want to make it easy to book a free screening and assessment which could save your life.

The expanded BreastScreen Queensland service offers the following benefits:

• Family-friendly extended opening hours, including out of hours, to make to booking an appointment easier.

• A new examination room with screening conducted by highly skilled female health professionals.

• A welcoming, modern, spacious waiting room.

How to use this service

If you’re a woman aged between 50 and 74 you can easily book a free BreastScreen appointment online or over the phone. Go to breastscreen.qld.gov.au or call 13 20 50.

If you or your family members are eligible, you can book an appointment at the Dental Clinic by calling Metro South Health’s Oral Health Hub on 1300 300 850.

Oral Health (Dental Clinic)The Dental Clinic at Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre provides high quality dental care for both adults and children.

The expanded service offers a range of new benefits:

• Double the number of dental chairs (increased from three to six) so we can offer you more appointments.

• In the near future, we aim to offer expanded opening hours, to make booking appointments more convenient.

• New X-ray equipment

• A spacious, relaxing waiting room with views into landscaped gardens, and a state-of-the-art treatment room.

Specialist Outpatient Clinics

NEW SERVICES

Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre will provide a major boost to Specialist Outpatient services.

A range of Specialist Outpatient Clinics that are new to the local area will be available at the community health centre from late November 2017.

This means the services will be easier to access and closer to home.

Telehealth access to health advice

Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre offers access to a range of additional services through state-of-the art telehealth technology. Using video conferencing systems installed in the building, patients are able to have consultations with a range of health specialists located elsewhere across the region.

Addiction and Mental Health Allied HealthThe Allied Health services at Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre will make use of the centre’s purpose-built gyms and well equipped consulting and therapy rooms.

The services available are:

• Physiotherapy (including Musculoskeletal and Lymphoedema clinics)

• Speech Pathology

The wide range of Addiction and Mental Health services available to people in Wynnum and Manly will continue to be offered by experienced health professionals based in the Bayside area.

The services are:

• Alcohol and Drug Services

• Child and Youth Therapy

• Mood Clinic

• Psychosis Therapy

• Rehabilitation

Child Development Services Chronic DiseaseA purpose-built rehabilitation gym and well-equipped consulting rooms allow us to provide an extensive range of Chronic Disease services at Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, including several that are new to the local area:

Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre is well equipped to look after the health and wellbeing of your children. The local area is home to over 11,000 families.

The new community health centre offers an extensive range of health services for children:

CONTINUED SERVICES

The following services will be available in nearby, modern health care facilities, or in your own home:

General beds

From late October 2017, the general health care beds for Wynnum and Manly will be available in two different versions, designed to give you the choice of care most appropriate for you.

1) Eight general health care beds will be offered in the new Pandanus ward at Casuarina Lodge (48 New Lindum Road, Wynnum West) next to the new Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre. Pandanus ward is purpose built to meet the needs of patients and care is provided by experienced Metro South Health clinicians.

2) Six general health care beds will be available through Hospital in the Home (HITH). Here you will be cared for in the comfortable and familiar surroundings of your own home, with regular care from specialist Metro South Health Hospital in the Home clinicians.

Palliative Care

Expert, compassionate Palliative Care for people in Wynnum and Manly is now available through a new system designed in extensive consultation with local families and health professionals.

Some community members told us they prefer to receive Palliative Care in the familiar surroundings of their own home. Other local people said they prefer to receive such care in a dedicated health care facility.

As a result, from late October 2017, we will offer two versions of Palliative Care for people in Wynnum and Manly.

1) In a modern residential aged care centre in the Wynnum-Manly area. Six Palliative Care beds (previously offered at Wynnum Health Service) will be available in this aged care centre, with the specialist care provided by Metro South Health clinicians. More details will be made available soon.

2) In your own home. You will be cared for in the comfortable, familiar surroundings of your home, with expert Palliative Care from Metro South Health clinicians. An extra two to four Palliative Care beds will be available locally using this home-based system.

The way to access general beds remains the same. You or your loved one will need to be referred by a doctor through Redland Hospital following a conversation about your needs.

Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre, Gundu Pa is located at 20 New Lindum Road, Wynnum West (corner of New Lindum and Wynnum roads).
