‘When you have teenagers you are a slave to your car, but in Dubai Marina they can entertain themselves – and it’s super safe’

Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Africa, California, New York, Uzbekistan, Switzerland and her native France – Gwen de Bizemont lived in all corners of the globe before spending the past eight years here in Dubai. “I am the true expat mum,” she laughs as we take a tour around her chic 44th-floor apartment. “I have followed my husband all over the world, so my kids have lived in six countries.”

After living in Umm Suqeim for five years and spending two years in Dubai Marina’s Emirates Crown, it ’s in Marina Crown – a stone’s throw from the Westin hotel – that she now lives with her 17-year-old daughter, Danae, and from which she orchestrates her interior business Deco Avenue (decoavenue.me) as well as bespoke gift company Gulf Gifts (gulfgifts.ae). So how does life in Dubai compare? “All of the cities I lived in were fabulous,” she says, “but it was one type of life: in so many other cities the suburbs are quite far from the town centre, so you really have to live that suburban life. In Dubai, though, you have everything in one place.”

Doubtless, sprawling sea views are an advantage of life in Dubai too – something she and Danae can drink in daily from the apartment’s circular windows. “I think this is the best side of the Marina,” tells Gwen, “there are only six buildings on the seafront and you don’t have the traffic of JBR to deal with. Marina Crown is actually the oldest building on the street, so it ’s not the most glamorous, but very soon the road works will be finished and later this year there will be a tram stop right outside, 24/7.”

So what made her plump for this apartment over so many others? “Most of the new builds I looked at were 1,000 square feet less than this one and I found all of them very square too, very normal. What I loved about this one was the round windows. It ’s a

kind of V-shape when you come in to the living room, which is very unusual. The apartments in this tower are at diagonals, so it ’s kind of funky.”

Inside, the apartment is a show of burnt orange, rust, gold and grey hues, forming a unique-yet-glamorous colour scheme – in fact, even the family dog fits in thanks to her rust-tinged coat. “I had beige and red interiors for 20 years and I thought ‘enough’!” laughs Gwen. “I switched all of the red to orange as it ’s a warm and happy colour, and all of the beige to grey.” And the secret to her eclectic look is to merge quirky pieces with familiar brand names. “To be honest I have done some essential shopping at THE One and Marina,” she tells. “But there are more and more niche boutiques popping up – Comptoir 102 on Jumeirah Beach Road, which opened in December, and O’de Rose too.”

But Gwen insists that her home is a practical pick too – not least for its location which she credits for its locality to great schools, restaurants (from Grosvenor House, Toro Toro and Buddha Bar to Johnny Rockets) and kid-friendly haunts. “I was a typical Jumeirah Jane and loved the Umm Suqeim area,” she says, “but true enough when you have teens you become a slave to your car. Here, though, they really can entertain themselves – it ’s super safe and there are so many options for eating and hanging out.” Ask Gwen what the best thing about life in Dubai Marina is though and she’ll tell you: “Pretending I’m in a big city while I’m right next to the sea, right?” We can’t argue with that.

Dubai Marina: the essentials Your need-to-know guide to what’s in and around the area

There are no restrictions on renting and buying here, so it ’s a great option for short- or long-term moves. The majority of property is in high rise towers, though, and you won’t find any villas on offer. Apartments range from the basic to the all-out luxurious, so you’re sure to find something to suit your style. Each block comes with its own facilities – gyms, saunas and swimming pools are standard fare. The views are what this area is all about: whether you’re after stunning vistas of the towers at night or calming panoramas of the Arabian Gulf, this is the area for you – although be warned, the top spots come at a premium...

It ’s renowned as one of the best ‘bite-sized’ malls in Dubai, and Marina Mall will be right on your doorstep. Inside, you’ll find the likes of high street favourites New Look, H&M, Promod and Koton. There’s a Waitrose supermarket (and a Spinneys just down the road) too. The Marina-side pathway is brimming with restaurants and cafés – we love Baker and Spice, and the quirky Shakespeare and Co for fresh nibbles on a weekend afternoon. Look to JBR for more high-end retail offerings, including the fabulous Boutique 1 for designer shopping, and eateries at The Ritz-Carlton and Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach.

This is one of the city’s best districts for entertainment: during down time, head to a Marina-side eatery to watch luxury yachts glide past, recline on the lively JBR beach, or let off some steam on the pedestrian Marina walkway (it ’s a favourite haunt of joggers and cyclists). If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a plethora of watersports at your fingertips: venture to the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort for parasailing, surfing lessons and banana boating. In the Marina itself, you’ll often see paddle boarders and kayakers too. For the ultimate thrill, head to Skydive Dubai, or soak up the action from a café on The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence.

You won’t find any schooling options in the immediate Marina vicinity, but there are a handful of nurseries in the JBR area that will cater to lit tle ones. Try Jebel Ali Village Nursery (jebelalinursery.com) and Fun & Play Nursery (funandplay.ae) for size. Older children will have to venture further afield for school, for example to Wellington International School (British curriculum, wellingtoninternationalschool.com), Emirates International School (International Baccalaureate, eischools.ae), Dubai British School (British curriculum, dubaibritishschool.ae) which are all a 15-20 minute drive away.

Data published by research firm Reidin.com showed that residential mortgage lending hit AED1.18 billion in the third quarter of 2012, up 25 per cent from AED946 million 12 months previously. In the same period, the sales transaction value in Dubai was AED3.25 billion, up from AED2.583 billion twelve months previously. Put some zing in your dinner menu with these Portuguese party favourites

A taste of the Algarve

• 200g clams with shells• 80ml olive oil• 41g salt• 30g fresh coriander• 30g garlic• 40ml lemon juice• Pinch of salt and pepper, • Cherry tomatoes and fresh

coriander, to serve

1. Add half of the salt to 1.5 litres of water in a large bowl, and submerge the clams.

2. After two hours, change the water and add the rest of the salt, then transfer the clams.

3. Peel and finely slice the garlic and roughly chop the coriander.

4. On a medium heat, sauté the garlic in the olive oil until it starts to soften, then add half of the lemon juice, half of the coriander, and season to taste.

5. When the mixture combines, drain the clams and add to the frying pan. Sauté for five minutes.

6. Add the remaining lemon juice and coriander, then cover and cook until the clams open.

7. Check seasoning before dishing up the clams, and serve immediately with the tomatoes and a pinch of chopped coriander.

Chef Luis Salgueiro’s career has taken him all over the world, but it ’s his home country, Portugal, that remains most dear. Having learned his trade in his family’s restaurant at the tender age of 18, he worked his way up the ladder receiving awards and accolades along the way. Now, he’s ventured to UAE soil for the launch of Picante, the Portuguese destination dining venue at The Four Points by Sheraton Bur Dubai. So what should hungry diners

expect from the menu? “Portuguese food is light, fresh and flavorsome,” says the chef. “The essence lies in using the freshest and highest quality ingredients, and the dishes are renowned for being rustic and robust.” Cuisine varies by region, according to the produce available locally: “It can be based on the climate, or the proximity to the sea, for example. Menus in coastal regions feature lots of sea food, whereas the inner areas cook mostly vegetables.” Among the essential ingredients for authentic Portuguese fare, Salgueiro notes “local olive oil, fresh garlic and herbs” – and when searching for fresh vegetables, we say head to one of Dubai’s farmers markets. • 200g cod • 150ml olive oil• 100g red onion• 10g garlic• 5g fresh parsley• 120g baby potatoes• 80g roasted tomato• 20g lollo rosso lettuce• 20g frissee lettuce• Salt and pepper, to taste

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Slice the onions and garlic.

2. In a roasting pan, combine the onion, garlic and cod, and pour the olive oil on top.

3. Add the baby potatoes to a second roasting pan, and sprinkle with salt.

4. Bake both dishes for 25 minutes, covering if necessary.

5. Serve the cod and potatoes with the frissee and lollo rosso lettuce – or, for a wintry twist, on a bed of roasted vegetables.

2. Place on a tray lined with baking paper and bake at 200°C for 20 minutes.

3. Remove from oven, place on baking paper, and roll carefully into small curls while still hot.

1. Mix together the sugar and flour in a bowl, then add the eggs and the orange juice.

1. Mix all three ingredients in a heavy-bottomed pan, and bring to the boil.

2. Remove from the heat, cool to room temperature, and transfer to a tupperware box.

3. Place in the freezer, and stir every 30 minutes until completely frozen.
