better solutions for refugeesthe MtS-certificate

Current refugee numbers are the highest since World War Two. Official statistics report 62 million registered refugees - three times the number in the year 2000. Unfortunately, this statistic is only the tip of the ice-berg. A recently published report by the Clinton Foundation claims that there are 1 billion „displaced persons“ worldwide. Additionally, most of these people live longer in exile than ever before. The average lifespan of a refugee camp is now 20 years, and we are increasingly confronted with so-called “protracted refugee contexts.”

One example is the Syrian crisis that has been going on for the last 6 ye-ars and does not seem to have an end in sight. The humanitarian sector is trying to cope with the magnitude of these new problems, but existing manuals, models and standards are not prepared for these new challen-ges.

The humanitarian sector must now pay for the fact that it has hardly in-vested in its own innovation in recent decades. The systems are bureau-cratic and operate with inefficient “top-down approaches,” spending up to 40% on administrative costs.

The refugees pay the price for this inefficiency - they spend an average of 12 years in refugee camps - where they have no self-agency, no chance for self-development, no prospect of livelihood, and therefore no hope and no future.

a global challenge

No One Chooses To Be A Refugee!

Too often refugees are perceived not as victims, but as perpetrators - a completely unfair view! We probably all have ancestors who have had to abandon their homes overnight and leave their entire lives behind. In all these tragic journeys, someone was there to help and spread some hope, offer some help, and provide new possibilities. Now it is our turn to lend a helping hand. Let us share some hope and support together. Let us work together with the impacted families to ensure that they have a dignified and peaceful future. Let us work together to create solutions for the most miserable places on earth: refugee camps.

our viSion

More Than Shelters (MTS) was founded with the mission to develop in-novative solutions for the global refugee crisis, one of the greatest chal-lenges of our time. Our guiding principles:

• We find new answers to the refugee crises of the 21st century• We transform the miserable conditions of refugee camps into digni-

fied living spaces• We develop, test, and scale innovative humanitarian solutions di-

rectly with the affected communities • We place the livelihood, talents, skills, and dreams of people in need

at the center of our work and give them a voice

Our innovation units:

MTS Planning Office:Our team works to develop integrated planning designs for both dome-stic and international projects. We develop models for refugee camps and arrival centers that will meet the future needs of the refugee crisis. Some examples of our work include our projects at Tempelhof Airfield in Berlin and the Za’atari camp in Jordan.

MTS Humanitarian Innovation:This unit focuses on developing and implementing sector-changing in-novations. For example, we have developed innovation incubators that will promote the talents of 1 million participants in Jordan, the MENA region, and Europe. (see photo below)

MTS Products:Our design department develops technical innovations such as our DOMO Shelter System.

refugee caMp or „arrival city“

MTS is a pioneer in developing new concepts for refugee camps on a glo-bal level. Camps with an average lifespan of more than 20 years are no longer compatible with the traditional manual for building these sites. Camps should be understood as “arrival cities,” in which complex struc-ture, risks, as well as endless potentials form.

To meet the needs of the people in these „arrival cities“ as well as the needs of the receiving communities and countries, we design humane plans and future-oriented solutions.

Together with UNHCR Camp Management and other partners, MTS’ in-novation and planning agency has developed an integrated master plan for the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan. A cross-sectoral project cata-logue that contains more than 30 humanitarian innovations has directly impacted the 85,000 inhabitants of the camp as well as the entire region.

In addition to the implementation of individual projects, MTS is mainly pursuing the further development and dissemination of this integrated planning model in the humanitarian context.

How will refugee camps become places of dignity and hope?

arrival centerS aS integration engineS

In order to create a new role model for refugee centers in Europe, MTS has brought together state agencies, NGOs, local people, and refugees to develop a new approach. We are designing a coherent location-specific concept, a management structure, and an action plan to build a new mo-del site.

Our arrival center will be a springboard into the city and the surround-ing neighborhoods. It includes social spaces and opportunities for labor market integration. It is a place of humanitarian innovation that com-bines the creative potential of the city with the talents of the refugee communities.

The MTS “integration engine” was developed for the Berlin-Tempelhof airport and two other locations in Berlin, and was refined through co-operation with municipalities and social institutions.

MTS builds more than just a space that provides shelter. We build a space that promotes integration.

How can we better accommodate and integrate refugees after their arrival?

How will refugee camps become places of dignity and hope?

doMo - SySteM

The DOMO Habitat System is the first fully modular design concept for the humanitarian context. MTS has succeeded in testing and implemen-ting the first series of DOMOs over the last 20 months. During our ope-rations in Nepal, Lesbos, mainland Greece, Germany, Haiti, and Iraq, we have discovered new ways to expand the potential of the DOMO-System.

Therefore, part of our scaling strategy is now to use our base DOMO unit and adapt it to specific user groups. We are especially interested in deve-loping it as a shelter for children, young people, and vulnerable women as well as a space for field hospitals.

New variations and configurations create even better solutions for spe-cific crisis situations. In this ambitious project, MTS has teamed up with international non-governmental organizations in order to achieve a di-rect co-design process.

Through this process, we plan to create the new “Designed-To-Fit” DOMO variants by summer 2018.How do we build the best spaces for children, teenagers, and sick people on the run?

How do we build the best spaces for children, mothers, young adults and disabled people in crisis areas?

1,000,000 talentS

MTS has developed and tested a program to operate so-called innovation incubators in refugee contexts. With our partners, we have the goal of building these spaces for 1,000,000 forgotten talents in refugee camps in the MENA region, Turkey, and Europe.

In the coming months, we will open a next set of physical locations whe-re refugee communities will meet to work with our international net-work of experts and generate initial business ideas.

It is crucial to generate income opportunities for refugee communities around the world in order to reduce their dependency and create a las-ting sense of hope while in exile.

MTS and its international partners are pioneers of such a concept and we are sure that this initiative will become a true “game-changer,” which will fundamentally shift the future of refugee work.

How do we build a space for the talents and hopes of refugees to unfold?

incubating – identify, expand, and support

talents, ideas and visions.

Convening – Combining, linking and supplementing opportunities and

possibilities in interdisciplinary teams.

Market-making – Develop opportunities for the introduction and scaling of ideas, which serve both host communities and refugee popula-

tions.

Platform-building – building a multi-

national network of hubs, providing “just-in-time” access to tools, processes,

infrastructure, expe-rience, and knowledge.

we need help to help

Like many social enterprises, MTS has a hybrid funding approach. Through donations and grants we are able to bring new programs and projects to reality and be effective. The creation of sustainable and sca-led efficiency is our main goal. Wherever refinancing models and social entrepreneurial concepts make sense, we implement them. We also ge-nerate our own revenue through consultations and product sales. These are sufficient to support the core of MTS; our staff, our offices and all our administration. Therefore, MTS has been a self-supporting initiative for the last years. However, we have three challenges that we must solve:

• Lack of growth financing• Strong capacity limitations• Old and no longer appropriate financing models

We can continue to pursue our ideas, but we cannot develop and grow them further. So, we urgently need growth capital to increase our effica-cy as much as possible.

This is why we are looking for philanthropic commitments totaling € 2 million for the next two years. To make it more than a donation we have come up with an idea.

„normal donation“ normally dona-

tions are used on a linear basis for projects. A cer-tain amount helps a certain number

of people.

the MtS iMpact certificate

Your philanthropic commitment deserves the highest level of efficiency and transparency. This is why we have developed an innovative and trus-ting partnership model:

The MTS Impact Certificate

The MTS certificate guarantees defined efficacy standards:• Your engagement is evaluated according to direct impact, qualitati-

ve effectiveness, and autonomous dissemination within the target groups and project partnerships

• Your commitment is divided into three initiatives, which means that it is diversified and the risk is spread out and the effectiveness is en-sured

In addition, it strives to leverage the effect of your donations:• Your commitment only promotes sector-changing ideas and thus

seeks to achieve the highest possible effectiveness• Your commitment is used to enable sustainable financing and econo-

mic autonomy through social and entrepreneurial models • Your commitment promotes projects that are developed with the

individuals themselves and are carried on independently by the im-pacted population

MTS CertificateWith us you support three fundamentally new ideas. these are passed on through

the target groups in-volved and our partner organizations. this is how we reach more people and have a

long-term and sustai-ned effectiveness.

how we inveSt in new ideaS

We use your generous support in the three divisions of MTS: the plan-ning office, product innovation, and humanitarian innovation.

For our humanitarian innovation team, we will use 40% of the funds in-vested to increase our program so that we may engage with the talents of 1 million refugees. Our work abroad, especially in Jordan, is being ex-panded to a new level. With our “refugee-led innovation incubators,” we create places where people can develop ideas that will offer them a dig-nified life, their own income, and a social environment. Our partners are Civic, Oxfam, Relief International, and 15 local organizations.

Our planning office is supported by 20% of the funds invested in order to develop our new model for refugee arrival centers and arrival cities. Our partners are foundations, universities, UN agencies and NGOs.

The DOMO has reached the production stage and has worked success-fully in our projects in Nepal, Haiti, Lebos, Germany, and Greece. We have learned that the system is particularly suitable for mobile kinder-gardens, schools, field hospitals, and social areas.

Together with the THW, UNHRD (United Nations Humanitarian Respon-se Reserve), and other partner organizations, we now want to enhance the DOMO system’s ability to fit these uses. We are therefore diversifying our product portfolio and will be able to help children and adolescents on the run to an even greater degree. To reach this goal we will use the remaining 40% of the funds donated.

our iMpact

1. We will reach at least 20,000 people directly and will impact at least 200,000 through our impact-scaling strategies “roll-out” and “inspiration.”

2. We will grow our “1 million talents” program in the MENA region.

3. We will develop a model for arrival centers in Europe and will raise the standards for accommodating and integrating refugees.

4. With our DOMO system and cooperation with large relief organizations, we will improve the global standard for the care of children and adolescents on the run.

5. We will increase the share of MTS’s self-financing from 60% to at least 80%.

6. We will work with at least 5 major international organiza-tions (AND, NGOs, state development agencies) and develop sector-changing projects.

the MtS iMpact certificate

Your certificate remains active until we reach our set targets. This will guarantee that your donation makes it´s full impact. Your philanthropic commitment is therefore without risk.

Of course, we can adapt to your needs as an institution and company, especially when it comes to special ideas for effective communication.

We have been particularly successful thanks to the support of our main donors, who have donated € 200,000 and more to helping those in need. These donors are people who have a deep sense of social responsibility. They are looking for a way to directly engage with our mission and im-pact those who need it most. These are people who want to work hand-in-hand with our organization and experience the impact we make through our innovative projects. Our gratitude for these donors cannot be put into words. We of course make every effort to go above and beyond and prove that their trust in us is warranted. If you have the opportunity to support us with such a great commitment, we would love to discuss your goals with you in person.

MTS does not devote its funds to a large fundraising budget, nor do we spend our money on advertising agencies or communication measures. Funds are directly distributed to our projects helping those in need. Ple-ase contact me directly:
