Youth today have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outside and connect with nature. Confidence, independence, and resilience—critical skills for a successful adulthood—are skills that can be learned through new experiences, problem solving and facing challenges head-on. Camp provides these opportunities and we are forever grateful to be serving youth in this way.

We hear from so many campers and their families that camp changed their life. A child who was shy and timid before camp, now willingly tries new things and isn’t afraid. A child who struggled with making friends, is social and outgoing after coming home from camp. We call this phenomenon “Camp Magic”.

This year, we embarked on a capital campaign to better serve our growing camp family. As Camp Chief Ouray begins to transform, we thank our past supporters and encourage future donors to join us on our road to an inspired future!

therefore every year we receive increasing requests for financial assistance.

Camp Chief Ouray (CCO) was founded in December of 1907 as part of the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver and hosted its first campers in the summer of 1908. For the first 71 years of CCO’s existence, camp was located north of Granby near current-day Lake Granby along the Colorado River. Camp started as a male only endeavor, but became co-ed in 1962. In 1979, YMCA of the Rockies took over camp operations, and since 1980 CCO has made its home at Snow Mountain Ranch.

CCO celebrated its 110th anniversary this past summer with campers from the 1950s to today.

InfrastructureNew water, sewer, electrical and fiber optic lines will be laid. Additionally, the road into camp is being rerouted to better serve families for camper drop-off and pick-up.

A Campaign for Camp Chief Ouray’s Second Century

Camp Chief Ouray, YMCA of the Rockies’ traditional overnight camp, has embarked on a journey of expansion and improvement in 2018. As identified in CCO’s master plan and indicated by a waitlist of over 400 campers, CCO must grow capacity and improve existing facilities in order to better serve campers. The leadership of YMCA of the Rockies has introduced Phase 1 of the expansion, requiring an investment of $12.5M. Installation of new infrastructure began in 2018. With fundraising underway, we invite you to learn more about this exciting project.

This project will include:

Camper HubThe new Camper Hub (dining hall) is more than a place to serve meals. With seating for 500+ people, at 15,700 sq. ft., it is a place for the whole camp to come together to connect – where the history and traditions of camp can be celebrated and shared. It is the center of camp activities and theme weeks.

CabinsThe cabin is the heart of camp. Together with their counselor, campers share the experience of camp as a team. By adding a new bunkhouse as well as new villages, CCO will not only serve more children, but also group campers more effectively by age, enhancing their experience. The cabin additions will enable CCO to serve over 600 more children each summer.

This year, CCO partnered with a Denver-area elementary school to give free camperships to students who would otherwise never have the opportunity to attend summer camp. We had 12 children ages 7 to 13 attend Camp Chief Ouray. The school is located in an area where 90%+ of the children qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are continuing the partnership in 2019 and hope to see even MORE kids coming to camp!
