My Summer 2009 Adventure to Esteli,
Nicaragua!
This summer, I will be
travelling to Esteli, Nicaragua which is located in Central America
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas
1 in 3 children has chronic malnutritionIt takes about 10 years for children to complete
the mandatory 6 years of schoolAbout half the population lives on less than $1.00 a
day¼ of the population does not have access to
drinking waterSusceptible to many natural disasters – hurricanes,
mudslides, volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides
Once there, I will spend 3 months volunteering at Funarte which is
a community based art project designed to help
children learn about important social issues in
their lives.
They make some truly beautiful pieces...
How, you may ask, was I given such an amazing opportunity?
I applied to a program called Beyond Borders!
Students live with a family in a developing country for 3 months
In the past, students have been placed in countries such as Ukraine, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Ghana, Malawi, Botswana, and Kenya
The work we do varies, from teaching English to working in sustainable agriculture, and from supporting an orphanage for young girls to assisting health units targeting HIV/AIDS.
But to do all this, I need your help!The total cost of the trip is $3,200.00I have already earned $2,000.00
towards the total. I am asking you to help me fundraise $1,200.00 further
This money goes towards:The Beyond Borders Charity It helps pay for students expenses,
promoting the program as well as providing some income to the families that we stay with over the summer.
I am also asking for help from Star Academy and its students because I learned many important values from Star Academy which played a large role in my participation in
Beyond Borders
Star Academy taught me the value of hard workIt can help you succeed in all areas of life, in
and out of school
Star Academy also taught me equality and co-operation
Learn to forget differences, accept others and work together
Stop inequality and discrimination that you might know about and start working together to achieve a common goal
Finally, Star Academy taught me the power of achieving your dreams
Don’t let anything deter you from reaching your potential.
I hope that you can help me achieve my dream. I know the Senior Star Academy Class is
creative and will work together as a team to help me fundraise for Beyond Borders.
