PLENARY SESSION | 10:00am - 11:00am

The Heart of Resilience Soundstage (main floor) | 10:00-11:00 | Diane Henderson, TRU

Resilience is founded on the ways individuals respond to challenges and is a key component of adaptation, change, and growth. Resilience offers strength to walk through vulnerability with the willingness to seek solutions and to learn. The ability to persevere is where opportunity can be cultivated. This keynote explores resilience in an EAL environment from an experiential, social-constructionist point of view. It aims to uplift audiences through personal story telling, interaction, and reflection about the heart of resilience.

Dian Henderson, senior lecturer and ESL Department Chair at Thompson Rivers University, has been an educator for 35 years, teaching in a variety of contexts from elementary to junior high, from working with immigrants to teaching in Asia and Latin

America. Her commitment to authenticity and Appreciative Inquiry informs her teaching and leading.

‘A’ SESSIONS | 11:30am - 12:15pm

Building Capacity and Preventing Burnout through Self-Compassion, Empathy and Kindness Room 113 | 11:00-11:45 | Nina Miller

Current research on brain plasticity shows that it is possible to increase resilience and cultivate happiness. This workshop will introduce tools and concepts from somatic-experiencing, self-compassion and vulnerability studies, in a simple way that professionals can use to support their own development as well as apply to classroom practise.

Round Table: The Heart of Resilience Room 120 | 11:00-11:45 | Dian Henderson, TRU & Cathy Ebert, UVic

Join Dian Henderson, senior lecturer and ESL Department Chair, for a post plenary question and answer Round Table to further explore Dian’s plenary talk, “The Heart of Resilience”.

Enriching EAP Online Writing Experience and Evaluation Room 121 | 11:00-11:45 | Branca Mirnic, Langara College

Since students' personal online inter-actions influence the approach to online writing, the presenter uses Brightspace D2L to explore online assignments with evaluating criteria that reflect learning outcomes. This session examines asynchronous online writing activities: discussions, peer practice and individual submissions, and offers criteria for evaluating online writing in EAP setting.

Tips for Incorporating More Skill Using into your Classroom Room 112 | 11:00-11:45 |Simone Roosen, MOSAIC

This session offers an opportunity for LINC instructors to reflect on and expand their use of skill using tasks, enabling learners to build portfolios faster and bridge language learning to real work application. Participants will receive strategies and ready-to-go action-oriented feedback tools for skill-using activities across CLB levels.

‘B’ SESSIONS | 1:15pm - 2:00pm

Coaching for Awareness, Capacity-Building & Resilience in TESOL Room 248 | 1:15-2:00 | Carolyn Kristjánsson, TWU

Resilience refers to the dynamics of adapting well when facing significant sources of stress. This presentation describes the coaching component of an MATESOL program that aims to develop awareness, capacity-building and resilience in ESOL educators. Audience members are invited to participate in a representative guided coaching experience on self-care.

Student-Centred Reading and Vocabulary: Dispatches from the Classroom Room 120 | 1:15-2:00 | Dave Henderson & Carolyn Sadowsky, UVic/Camosun

Working one-on-one really helps readers gain skills quickly. But what if there's only one teacher in the class? Writing vocab quizzes takes time, and who knows if the questions will be relevant to the students? In this session, find out what we did to solve these two tricky problems.

Exploring Academic Writing Challenges of Chinese EAL Students in Canada Room 121 | 1:15-2:00 | Jing Mao, University of Victoria

Drawing on an ecological perspective, this multiple case study intends to explore the academic writing needs of Chinese EAL students in their first year writing course with the aims to inform course instructors and directors for better supporting them in their writing development and university studies.

The Power of Content: Using Content to Enhance Learning Room 250 | 1:15-2:00 | Talya Clay, National Geographic Learning

At National Geographic Learning, our approach to content is to keep it varied, surprising, novel, and global. In this session we will explore four key content areas—photography, reading, infographics, and video—and see how they can enhance your students' learning experience.

‘C’ SESSIONS | 2:15pm - 3:00pm

Pill Popping: Games that Work like Multivitamins Room 120 | 2:15-3:00 | Cynthia Watson & Kara Lavers, LAB Vancouver

You will leave this session with new games (and some twists on old games) guaranteed to bring up the energy in class without increasing your preparation or correction time. Students will have fun, their motivation will increase, and you will be able to bring their focus back to course content.

Jump-Starting Your LearnIT2Teach Training: Complete Stage 1 Online Room 121 | 2:15-3:00 | Paul Carter, New Language Solutions

In this presentation, eligible LINC teachers will take a guided tour through the LearnIT2Teach Stage 1 training online version. Participants will leave ready to login from home and start their training to use the EduLINC courseware and the new PBLA additions with their learners. (Participants must have a LINC class.)

Deploying Grammatical Metaphor for Paraphrasing Room 248| 2:15-3:00 | Jennifer Walsh Marr, UBC Vantage College

Paraphrasing is tough enough without being exacerbated by the punitive discourse around it. However, most textbook instructions are rather limited in how to actually put something in one's own words. This presentation looks beyond suggesting synonyms and gets in to the mechanics of grammatical changes suitable for EAP contexts.

Full-Body and Voice Burnout Prevention Warm Up Room 250 | 2:15-3:00 | Bill Acton, TWU & Angelina VanDyke, SFU

Feeling sluggish, stressed or caffeine deprived? This session, created by voice and pronunciation specialists for the language teacher (and students), should help. The carefully scaffolded, ‘restorative’ exercises activate and focus body and vocal tract in less than 10 minutes. No meditation, medication, or mendacity required.

EXPECTATIONS? A Stress Recipe. You Need an ASSERTIVE Diet. Michael Wicks, retired

Developing resilience allows us to bounce back from changes in conditions, and achieve stasis. Teachers expect much of themselves and others; however, they may exceed what is possible and cause disappointment. This may lead to apathy, resentment, anger, or depression, and reduce our ability for RESILIENCE.

Teaching Language and Content in an Internationalized University Class Naghmeh Babaee, LaSalle College

This presentation reviews opportunities and challenges of teaching in multi-lingual university classes. It presents and analyzes teaching opportunities and challenges of an Interior Design Instructor. It also offers innovative instructional techniques and practical classroom application for faculty members to respond to these challenges.
