INTERVIEW
With 62 luminous years dedicated to power industry, Mr. V Rama Rao has held coveted positions during his professional career attributed to his technical prowess and leadership skills. Presently, he is a full-time Director with GVK Industries Limited and Director - Technical for Alaknanda Hydro Power Co. Ltd.
He has been conferred with ‘Bharat Ratna Shri Mokshagundam Vishveshwaraya’ Award from The Institution of Engineers (India), AP State Centre in the year 2003. The Institution of Engineers (India), New Delhi conferred on him the ‘Best Electrical Engineer of the Year’ Award in 2005. He has also been honoured with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by Atluri Venkateshwara Rao Trust and Institution of Engineers (India), AP State Centre in the year 2008.
We now bring to you a tête-à-tête with one of our most senior employees.
You have devoted over 62 years towards
your profession and you hold the record
for the highest number of hydel projects
commissioned. Please elaborate on your
professional journey.
Ast er securing my Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering (Hons.) - Electrical from
Andhra University in 1950, I began my
career as a Junior Engineer in Madras
State Electricity Board (Composite
State). In 1956, with the formation
of Andhra State, I was transferred to
Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board
and I have been with APSEB ever since. I
had been to Hitachi Works, Japan in 1960
for one year and had undergone special
training in Design and Implementation
of Hydel Projects. I also obtained Post
Graduate Diploma in Advanced Technical
Training by Asia Bonka Kaikan, Japan
(Overseas Advanced Training Center).
Yes, it is true that I have been associated
with designing and construction of
almost all the power projects deployed
in the AP State during my tenure with
the electricity board. These include the
110 MW Machkund HEP which was
inaugurated by India’s fi rst President
- Dr. Rajendra Prasad as well as the
implementation of various hydel sub
stations, Srisailam and Nagarjuna
Sagar. I have led the implementation of
the Vijayawada Thermal Power Project,
Kothagudem and Ramagundam Thermal
Projects as well. Altogether, I have
implemented and worked on about 30
Hydro Projects and 2 Thermal Power
Plants during my tenure with APSEB.
I joined GVK in 1992 as a Technical
Advisor and started implementing
Jegurupadu CCPP in 1994, and
commissioned the country’s fi rst
Independent Power Plant (IPP) in 1996.
Ast er a successful implementation
of Jegurupadu plant, our Chairman
envisioned foraying into Hydro power
plants, which enabled us to take up
the Alaknanda HEP in Uttarakhand at
this juncture of my career. I am glad
that the project will get commissioned
this year.
60 years and still going rock strong;
please share with us what inspires you.
Designing and implementation of power
plants has been my passion and as
destiny would have it, I never thought
of any other career. I love to be on the
fi eld, which keeps me hands-on and
active all the time. I am a committed
person who believes in deadlines and
achieving them as per a well-charted
plan. I believe in delegating the right job
to the right person and overseeing them
to completion. All the projects that I have
led so far are clear testimonials of my
achievements in the past.
Your works are directly reaching out
towards the development of the society.
Please share your views on this.
Power projects enhance the development
of a nation and so its citizens. The addition
of huge hydel generating capacity
at Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar
contributes to about 5000 million units
of cheap hydel energy and 2000 million
units of gas power respectively every
year, making it possible to meet the
power requirements of industrial and
agricultural sectors. This in turn, adds
to the national wealth and welfare of
society.
The design and erection of the First IPP
in the country serves as a model for other
similar power projects likely to come up
in future.
Committed. Knowledgeable. Humble. A seasoned leader who inspires and motivates.
Mr. V Rama RaoDirector - Technical
GVK WORLD March 20138
Please share some of the most
memorable experiences from your
professional journey...
When you achieve your goal, all moments
associated towards accomplishing
it become memorable. In the case
of power projects, I feel blessed to
collaborate on certain projects
like Vijayawada, Rayalaseema,
Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar,
and Pochampadu Power
Plants, which are considered
as landmarks in nation
building. My association with
these projects began right
from the investigation stage
to designing, construction
and operation of stations. I
remember the setting up of
‘Spill-Way Gates’ at Srisailam
project dam in a record time of
5 months. The Jegurupadu 228
MW extension gas-based CCPP
was also completed under my
supervision. At GVK, we built
the First IPP in Andhra Pradesh
in a record time of 18 months.
Such accomplishments make
me feel proud and give me the courage
to take more projects head-on.
How has your association been with the
Chairman and the Group?
I consider myself very fortunate for
being associated with Dr. GVK Reddy
for so many years now. The support that
I have received from him has given me
a lot of strength to continue even ast er
my retirement from public service. He
has always motivated good talent and
encouraged his associates to take up
additional responsibilities and prosper.
In spite of making it so large in the
industry, he is very humble and down to
earth. He views life from a common man’s
perspective and has created employment
opportunities and developmental
programmes for them. This is one of the
reasons why people look up to him and
have been around with him for decades
now. Even today, he takes advice from
his people to move ahead with the
projects. He believes in basic principles
of honesty and integrity and has built
the conglomerate through his sheer
dedication and hard work.
Which are the projects you’re presently
associated with?
I am presently involved
in the execution of two
Hydro Projects - one in
Mapang and the other
in Bogudiyar Sarkari,
in Uttaranchal. The
preparation of DPR
and site investigation
work is under progress.
What message would
you like to give to the
current generation?
I feel that one should
set defi nite goals
for oneself and
passionately strive to
achieve them. I would
urge people to dedicate
themselves profusely
to whatever they choose; as this would
automatically deliver the desired results
and help them realize their goals. Though
I would expect people to experiment in
the initial days of their career to ensure
quick learning, I would rather insist them
to stick around and be committed to the
organization that they are associated with.

- an entire year’s free usage of the airport’s F&B off erings. The employees of the airport also gathered for a historical photo session forming the words 50 million. This signifi cant milestone is a testimony to GVK BIA’s service standards within just few years of commencing operations.
BIA, Bangalore wins green awards• BIA, Bangalore was honoured with the ‘Golden Peacock Environment Management Award’, making it the only airport to have
done so in India, for its commitment towards maintaining ecological balance and minimizing adverse impact on the environment.

How did you develop this passion for landscaping?Every project feels like the fi rst project and getting appreciated for my work gives me a new high. The admiration by respective corporates has always motivated me to work harder and perhaps I developed a strong passion for what I am doing now. As they say, it’s hard to beat a person who never gives up and I never did! I have worked with joy.
Who inspired you to take this profession? Like others, initially it was just a job for me, to look ast er my family. As I progressed, the love for beautiful green art and motivation to keep moving ahead kept inspiring me.
What was the overall theme that you have adapted in creating the landscaping at BIA?The landscape at the Bengaluru International Airport is hugely infl uenced by Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage. Bangalore is
known as the ‘Garden City’, which is refl ected in BIA’s landscape and in its fl ora.
How pivotal were your teams and internal resources at BIA to that end?Helen Keller said, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much’ and I believe in that adage. For me it’s not an individual contribution, it’s also the team around me, motivation from my reporting heads, and most importantly the management’s belief and confi dence in me that inspires me to work so hard. The support by BIA and MIA’s management has been a huge infl uence and contributing factor.
Your message to fellow colleagues? If you learn how to enjoy your work and be passionate just about anything you do, it will refl ect in your work. “Love what you do”, that’s the mantra to deliver the best!

Goindwal Sahib is a small village on the
banks of River Beas and is a holy place for
Sikhs. With hundreds of pilgrims visiting
the famous Gurudwara, the village wakes
up with the chanting of hymns from the
Guru Granth Sahib.
The Goindwal Sahib power project is a
2 x 270 MW Coal based thermal power
plant in the revenue villages of Hansawala,
Pindian, Hotian, Alampur and Verowal
near Goindwal Sahib, Khadur Sahib
Tahsil, Tarn Taran District, Punjab. The
site is 40 km from the city of Amritsar,
60 km from the Amritsar Airport and 1
km from Goindwal Sahib Village. The site
possesses great accessibility since the
state highway of Tarn Taran - Kapurthala
touches its southern boundary and the
Beas River lies 900 m from the eastern
boundary wall of the site.
BTG (Boiler Turbine Generator) package
and BOP (Balance Of Plant) package
were awarded to BHEL and Punj Lloyd
respectively.
Initially, the project faced many
diffi culties as the soil was not favourable
for construction because of high ground
water-table with uniform fi ne-grained
soil, which leads to liquefaction during
earthquakes. The soil was then stabilized
through vibro-compaction technique ast er
which the piling process began.
The construction of 270 m tall RCC
chimney with 2 fl ues is a real challenge
in these soils. The construction of the
chimney shell and one of the fl ues is now
fi nished. The Goindwal Project is gearing-
up for its 1st and 2nd Unit Commission
in this year. Coal will be sourced from the
Tokisud captive coalmine in Jharkhand,
which is at a distance of 1600 km from
the project site.
Adhering to excellent standards of
sustainability, a green belt is being
developed on-site in 160 acres of land
with about 1,00,000 saplings that include
fruit bearing trees like mango, litchi,
guava etc. and other forest trees as well.
A residential colony with 163 units is being
developed for the project staff . A fi eld
hostel with 24 rooms has already been
commissioned. Also, under construction is
a recreation club, hospital, and a nursery
school with a large two-acre play area.
GVK has constructed about 100 houses
around the project site for the benefi t of
economically backward natives under a
CSR initiative and many more are in the
pipeline. This has greatly contributed to
the economic development of the area.
A 2 x 660 MW project with supercritical
technology is being planned for
construction within the same premises. A
public hearing held recently regarding the
same was also completed very peacefully.
The progress at the Goindwal project
looks very optimistic and we sincerely
wish that this project will bring more
accolades to GVK and would become one
of the biggest power plants in Punjab.
On the go: Goindwal Sahib
PROJECT UPDATES
A major milestone was crossed with the successful
Boiler Light up of Unit No. 1 at the 2 x 270
MW Goindwal Sahib Power Project. This is a
commendable achievement as it was accomplished
in just 32 months, right on schedule. Consequently,
the plant also looks all set for commissioning by
this year. GVK has been developing this project at
Goindwal Sahib Village in Tarn Taran district, Punjab
on BOO basis. 23rd January, 2013, Hindustan Times (Punjab)

We human beings are gregarious. Our life dwells on our interaction
with people around us. Our immediate environment in which we
co-exist is greatly impacted by our communication because that
is how we reach out to others to express ourselves.
Though ‘what we say’ plays a signifi cant role in how we express
ourselves, a much bigger aspect of getting our message across
also lies in what we convey through our physical mannerisms,
eye contact, posture, gestures, facial expressions etc. These are
one’s personal means of making his or her message clear to
others. These elements of communication constitute ‘non-verbal
communication’ or ‘body language’.
The famous song by Ronan Keating, “You say it best when you
say nothing at all............” is one of my all-time favourites. When I
was young, I loved listening to this song because of its intriguing
lyrics. And today, I understand the whole new dimension that this
song adds to the beauty of expressing one’s feelings (without
words).
Body language is an extension of our state of mind. It comprises
involuntary gestures that usually accompany an individual’s
speech and together they give message to the other person that
may be variously interpreted. Therefore, it becomes important to
know and work on our own body language.
While speaking to a group of people, one of the most basic
gestures is to maintain eye-contact. This helps connect better
with the audience. While making no eye-contact conveys
insecurity, over-doing it may cause discomfort and seem impolite.
As an audience, nodding head every once in a while not only
conveys that we are listening attentively but also encourages the
speaker.
Sitting with arms or legs crossed during a conversation makes
one seem defensive or guarded. Shaking legs while sitting
or tapping fi ngers against the table are signs of nervousness,
anxiety and impatience. One must keep limbs relaxed and natural
to convey confi dence and friendliness.
Touching the face too ost en shows doubt or inability to answer a
question and can distract people in discussion.
Walking with head straight up and eyes towards the horizon
conveys self-confi dence.
To show interest, one may lean towards the person talking. To
portray self-confi dence and a relaxed state of mind, one may
lean back a bit. There should be a proper balance as leaning in
too much may mean being needy, sycophant or desperate and
leaning back too much makes one seem arrogant and distant.
Standing with hands in pockets in situations which demand some
action and enthusiasm conveys an individual’s lack of interest.
One needs to slow down sometimes, for example, walking slower
not only makes us seem more calm and confi dent but it also
makes us feel less stressed. When someone calls us from behind,
we may turn around a bit slowly instead of a jerky movement.
Finally, we should always keep a positive and an open attitude
and a relaxed demeanour. What we feel from within refl ects
through our body language and can make a major diff erence to
how eff ectively we communicate.
We can improve our body language but it requires persistent
eff orts from our side. Let’s use these bits and work on them
gradually so that they enhance our personality to make us feel
more confi dent about ourselves and be better communicators.
