Lay user modeling

Models are great tools for organizational planning• Help to form a common understanding• Allow for discussing effects of change before applying it

Lay user participation makes them better• Increases accuracy of models• Increased motivation to adopt them

Self-directed, user-managed modeling is even better• Stakeholders are no longer cut from model usage• They can become active and report experiences from practice

Why isn´t this a common practice in organizations?

A collaborative model lifecycle

Concepts for self-directed user-managed modeling are there but sparse and should be aligned to a model lifecycle

• Ideation• Clustering• Dialogue games• Wiki modeling• Critiquing• Walkthrough• …

We also bring tools and methods for some of the phases.

Content collection

Text is automatically transferred into model elements• Can be used anytime and anywhere in the model• Supports different element types• Can be used by lay users without prior training

Model prototyping / Design and Negotiation

Touch interface combined with Kinect Cameras

• Multi-user clustering(supports prototyping)

• Collaborative voting(supports design and negotiation)

Usage

• Attach annotations to any part of a model via an easy to use web interface

• First studies show promising results• Allows for large scale participation

Alignment has be improved and gaps have to be filled

• We contribute:– A framework for continuous lay user involvement in

model development and usage– Tools that are usable without prior training– Methods that employ these tools in modeling

• We need:– Better alignment of tools and methods to each other

and to the lifecycle– More tools and methods to fill in existing gaps– Common agenda to foster the development of this

stream of research

What do we contribute? What do we need?
