Sydney Measles AlertHealth officers in Sydney have warned that recent plane passengers, hostel residents, and hospital

and medical centre patients are at a risk of developing measles. NSW Health’s announcement

came after

it has been reported that four people with measles have come into contact with large groups of people while they were still infectious. Apparently, those four people didn’t know they were carrying the

dreaded disease as they haven’t been diagnosed before they went out.

According to the health department, two of those four people spent time in hostels in Cairns and

Magnetic Island. Then, they travelled to Sydney on a Virgin Airlines flight on March 28 and Tiger Airlines flight on March 29. One of the two

travellers also spent time in the Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department.

Two children travelling from New Delhi to Sydney are suspected to have contracted measles while

they were still in India. According to health officers, they were most likely contagious when they

boarded flight AI302 on March 30. They added that the children also spent time in a medical centre in Blacktown and then later in Mt Druitt Hospital on

April 2.

Dr Vicky Sheppeard, branch director at the NSW Health Communicable Diseases, urged people who haven’t been vaccinated against measles and may

have been in contact with the four travellers to watch out for symptoms of the disease for the next few days. Symptoms include fever, sore eyes, and coughing. They may also develop blotchy rashes that may spread from their head and neck to the

rest of the body after three to four days. Thee rashes are generally not itchy.

According to Dr Sheppeard, measles is “the most infectious communicable disease there is.” In fact, someone can catch it by simply being in the same

room as an infected person

A Word of AdviceIf you’re going to organise a Sydney Amazing Race as part of your company’s team building

activities, make sure that you avoid places that are mentioned in NSW Health’s announcement. Also, ensure that everyone who will participate in the event is healthy and in good condition. This is to

prevent any accidents or untoward incidents. Always make everybody’s safety your No 1 priority.
