Thinking Beyond the Bubble

Saul Klein@cape @localglobevcSprint 16 Feb, 2016

Newsflash: the Internet is now enormous

And with mobile, it will connect 5.6bn people within 5 years

Markets we know well are only 14% of global audience with moderate upside

84% Internet coverage

85% Internet coverage

China + India = already 32% of global Internet with lots of room to grow

49% Internet coverage

24% Internet coverage

“We” are already less than "the <20%"

UK & France already smaller than Nigeria

The stakes are high

So how is UK tech doing?

Despite appearances, actually pretty well…

It feels like blue skies for startups

But we need to look outwards and push for way more diversity to really grow

We know 7% of small companies create >50% of new jobs

.

We need more jobs, we need the right jobs - we need to change how we think about labour markets

We have too many elephants, many past their prime

But our cities lead the world in wanting to be entrepreneurial

With the right ingredients, these days you can get very big, very fast

The Mega-Unicorns are less than 40 years old

$422bn

$287bn $280bn

Still only a few sectors have really been seriously disrupted

Forbes 2000 list, Cruchbase, Aileen Lee’s list, Fred Wilson’s Hackpad and Index’s own research

UK is surprisingly well positioned to succeed

SMEs

Govt Digital Services

Our government is a global thought leader in digital transformation

And it’s just getting started

London is increasingly Sand Hill Rd for EMEA

To create $50bn unicorns, we need to be the best place in the world for Zebras

Our mindset needs to be geared for a new world

We used to know a lot about India & China

We definitely know all a lot about the US

We used to know a lot about Nigeria

We have our 1st major chance for 150 years to impact society at scale

So let’s not be afraid of the dark

Aim high and shoot for the moon
