    2010 COMPENDIUM 53.

When Roboute Guilliman,Primarch of the Ultramarines, set about the long and arduoustask of preparing the CodexAstartes, the role of spacevessels amongst the AdeptusAstartes proved a particularsticking point. For an Imperiumstill reeling from internecineHersey that almost tore it apart, the division of power was avitally important consideration. One of the most extreme op tionson offer, it was ventured bysome that the Space Marinesshould be denied any vessels at

all, barring intra-systemtransports for movement between homeworlds andattendant moons. Corax, amongothers, protested strongly that infact had the Space Marines been

better equipped with fleets oftheir own, his own legion mightnot have been so horrendouslydecimated when trapp ed onIstvaan V by Horus and thenewly revealed traitors. Instead,a compromise was reachedwhich limited the SpaceMarines to vessels whose

primary role was that oftransport, delivery andsuppression designed tofacilitate planetary assault. Onlythe smallest of vessels would be

permitted to act exclusively asgunships, with the larger strikecruisers and battlebargesremaining predominately as aidsto invasion, ensuring the Space

Marines would never present a threat to the Imperialnavy proper. Inevitably, the wrangling overinterpretation of a ships primary role leads tosome Chapters possessing rather more versatilefleets than the Imperial Navy is entirely comfortablewith.

Unlike the vessels of the Imperial Navy, a Spacemarine ship has a relatively small crew. A SpaceMarine is far t oo valuable to wast e on manning a gunor watching a surveyor screen, and so only theofficers aboard a vessel are likely to be SpaceMarines, as well as the few Techmarines whooversee the engines and perform other mechanicalduties. Almost all the ships systems are run andmonitored by servitors, half-human cyborgs who arewired into the vessels weapons, engines andcommunications apparatus. There are also a fewhundred of the Chapters serfs to attend to otherduties, such as routine cleaning and maintenance, serving the Space Marines during meal times andother such honored tasks. These serfs come from ethChapters home planet or the enclave they protect, many of them Novitiates or applicants who havefailed some part of the recruiting or training process. These serfs are fanatically loyal to their superhumanmasters and are indoctrinated into many of the lesserorders of the Chapters Cult. Although human, theystill benefit from remarkable training and access toweaponry superior to that usually found aboard a

naval vessel, making them a fearsome prospect in a boarding action even without the support of theirgenetically modified lords.

    FLEET ORGANIZATION

Usually, one of the Chapters Captains will beappointed Master of the Fleet with overallresponsibility for the Chapters entire fleet. This will

place at his disposal all the p ilots, gunnery officers, command crews and navigators in the Chapter. These additional crewmen will not join the Mast er of

the Fleet s own company, for they themselves arenot Space Marines. Most Chapters include severalCults dedicated to the Fleet or to the vessels withinit, and it is the rarefied honor of admission to these

Cults which the serfs aspire to when recruited intothe fleet, for despite all their specialization they willalways remain subservient to their Space Marinemasters, no matter how much the fleet might actuallyrely upon them. While these serfs make up the vast

bulk of crews aboard Space Marine vessels, theMaster of the Fleet also has a number of SpaceMarines under his command, who act as high-ranking officers aboard the fleets capital ships,

providing captains for individual vessels, leadingspecialized boarding parties, or ot herwise overseeingthe dedicated serfs who provide the bulk of avessels manpower.

The exact organization of those Space Marinestasked with crewing the fleet varies from Chapter tChapter. In some cases, it will be the Master of theFleets own company that provides these Marines, with each of his veteran captains acting as captain toa different vessel within the fleet while their ownsquad members each man a different vital areawithin that same vessel. In other cases, squads fromdifferent companies within the Chapter may becharged with manning the fleet, serving under thecommand of the Master of the Fleet in the same waythat a Space Marine battleforce may be made up ofsquads drawn from several companies across theChapter under the command of a single, nominatedforce commander. At an absolute minimum, aMaster of the Fleet typically needs eighty to aThunderhawks and its landing craft, and mostChapters have measures in place to ensure that astanding force of this size is p ermanently available tothe Master of the Fleet.

As with all specialized roles which a Space Marinemight be honoured, serving in the fleet brings with ita variety of different titles and ranks. While theMaster of the Fleet retains overall control of the

entire fleet, Space Marine Chapters frequently findthemselves dispersed among several warzones allover the galaxy, and so the command of individualfleets or even lone vessels frequently falls to

individual Captains. In this manner, a Space Marineforce commander may well find that he is chargedwith command of both the battleforce and thetransporting fleet, earning him additional honorifics, such as Regent of the Fleet, Commander at Sail andso on. A Marines heraldry and personal armormarkings may well bear emblems of his servicewithin the fleet, additional honors and titles gainedthere, or other emblems signifying their role withinthe fleet.

    SPACE MARINE SPECIAL RULES

In all cases, the following rules are in addition to

those listed on pp.20-27 and 30 of Armada.Thunderhawk Annihilator

The Thunderhawk Annihilator is a specializedgunship employed only by crusading Chapters.Forsaking its transport capability in favor of a

powerful Annihilator cannon, it provides crusadingChapters with the kind of thunderous firepowernormally provided by the bombers of the Imperial

Navy or the Battle Titans of the Adept usM echanicus.

Thunderhawk Annihilators combine the abilities of bombers and fighters, and they move like any ot her

attack craft with a speed of 20cm. A Thunderhawkcounter that is intercepted by enemy fighters ormoves onto an enemy ordnance marker removes theenemy marker exactly the same way fighters would. However, they are extremely resilient and follow allspecial rules for Thunderhawks described on p.21 ofArmada.

When a Thunderhawk Annihilator comes in contactwith an enemy ships base, they attack it like

bombers as described for bombers on p.30 of theRulebook, even if they have used their resilience to

remain in play. Once they complete their attack, theyare removed normally. Thunderhawk Annihilatorscannot be used as assault boats.

    Drop Pods

All Space Marine capital ships are equipped withdrop pods. These add nothing to their profile and arenot treated as ordnance in any respect. Drop podsenable Space Marine capital ships to quickly deploySpace Marines to the surface and impart +2 assault

points for each capital ship during a planetary assaultinstead of +1.

    Honor Guard

Most Chapters maintain special bodies of honoredSpace Marines with extraordinary experience, givenover to form the personal retinue of company

captains, great heroes within the Chapter or even theChapter Master himself. Once per turn you may usethe Honor Guard, if your fleet list includes them. Allthe normal rules for teleport attacks apply, exceptthat they may be used in addition to a normalteleport attack that turn. The player may roll twodice and choose which one to use as the result, including the normal +1 bonus for being SpaceMarines.

    Terminator Boarding Parties

Taken from the elite First Company and wearing theheaviest armor known to man, Terminators are thegreatest ship-to-ship fighters in the galaxy. Once perturn a vessel equipped with Terminator boarding

parties may use them when conducting a hit and runteleport attack. They roll two dice for its hit and runattack and apply both results, including the normal+1 bonus for being Space Marines. Terminators may

be used in addition t o a normal teleport attack t hatturn.

SPACE MARINES IN BATTLEFLEET GOTHICI n addi tion to the shi p classes described on pp.22-25 of Armada, some Space M ari ne fl eets may make u se of the f oll owi ng vessels.

Some Chapters possess no homeworld at all, andinstead operate from mobile space fortresses. Thesegigantic craft contain sufficient accommodation, workshops, hangars, training areas and dockfacilities for the entire Chapter and operate as asemi-mobile base for Chapt er operations. While theymay take any number of forms, fortress-monasteriesare immensely powerful, with firepower equivalentto that of the mighty Ramilies Star Fortress in manyrespects. Additionally, they are not only mobile butwarp-capable, and it is not unknown for some SpaceMarine Chapters to actually utilize a suitablymodified Ramilies Star Fortress allocated to them

for this express purpose. No Chapter possesses morethan a single fortress, and as the base of operationsfor the entire Chapter they are guarded just asferociously as a homeworld would be.

F ortress-M on astery specia l ru l es In all cases, a Fortress-Monastery follows all r ules for the Ramilies Star Fortress detailed on pp.31-34except as specifically outlined in these rules.

Special Orders, Split Orders and Leadership Fortress-monasteries can undertake special orders inthe same manner as a Ramilies Star Fortress. Theyhave a base leadership of 10; they are the home tothe command staff of an entire Space marineChapter, after all! It may also purchase re-rolls at thecost listed in its fleet list. These re-rolls are usableonly by the fortress-monastery itself. FleetCommanders may be placed aboard a fortress, inwhich case their own leadership value is used (evenif less!). If us ed in this manner, re-rolls p urchased bythe fortress-monastery are added to thecommanders own re -rolls and can be used by theentire fleet. Different quadrants may use differentspecial orders in the same manner as a Ramilies StarFortress, and the Basilica likewise can be undermultiple sp ecial orders at t he same time.*See the special rules for Fortress-m onastery launch limitations concerning T hunderhawks

Movement Before the game starts, the owning player can decideif the fortress-monastery will rotate or not. Oncedecided, it cannot be changed throughout the game.

If it is decided that it will rotate, it does so for 45degrees once per game turn (no more or less) at the beginning of the ow ning players movement p hase. Ifit rotates, it will always rotate in the same direction. The Ramilies otherwise does not move in any wayduring the course of the game, it still counts asdefenses, and t his movement does not alter nor can it

be altered by any command checks or sp ecial ordersit makes. If the owning player decides the fortress-monastery will rotate, then it cannot have ships dockwith it for the duration of the game.

QuadrantsQuadrants function the same way they do forRamilies Star Fortresses in all respects, includingreceiving damage normally and against NovaCannon templates, shooting and ordnance attacks.Quadrants are treated individually in regards tocritical damage, hit and run attacks, becomingcrippled, and when reduced t o zero damage.

DockingIf the fortress-monastery is not rotating at the start ofthe battle, ships in close proximity with the fortress-monastery may dock with it as described in the rulesfor a Ramilies star fortress and may use a BurnRetros command check for free to do so. Any shipdocked with it gets an extra four dice to repaircritical damage at the end of every turn it is docked

to the fortress-monastery. If it remains docked fortwo full turns without being braced, it automaticallyreloads ordnance and does not need to pass a ReloadOrdnance command check to do so.

Shi elds and Blast Markers Each quadrant has its own shields; when blastmarkers are placed, put them in contact with theappropriate edge of the fortress- monasterys base. Inthe end phase, D6 blast markers are removed fromthe entire model, not just from each quadrant.Because the four quadrants are essentially in contactwith each other, blast markers in contact with the

base effect the quadrant taking fire and the twoadjacent quadrants as well. If the fortress-monasteryis rotating, blast markers not removed remain in

place when t he Ramilies rot ates and affect whateverquadrant they are in contact with at the end of itsmovement.

Hit-and-Run RaidersHit and run raids are resolved only against thequadrant t hey are directed at and will not affect otherquadrants. Remember that the fortress-monastery isa Space Marine installation, and as such hit-and-runattacks will deduct -1 from their dice roll.

Teleport Attacks Fortress-monasteries contain numerous teleportchambers, both for dispatching troops to othervessels in the fleet and delivering them into combat,

be it on a nearby planet or as a devastating hit andrun attack against enemy vessels. Each quadrant notcrippled allows the fortress-monastery to launch oneteleport hit and run attack in the normal manner, with all teleport attacks benefiting from a +1 bonusfor being Space Marines. In addition, one of theteleport attacks made by the fortress can beconducted by Terminator boarding parties. This isincluded in the fortress- monasterys point cost anddoes not have to be purchased extra. This extraattack can be made once per turn.

Boarding Actions At times, an entire Space Marine Chapter may befound aboard a fortress-monastery, along with anuntold number of their highly-trained serfs and

retainers. Attempting to board one of them would beequivalent to trying to capture an entire city or evena small planet tens of thousands of troops would beneeded. Only Space Hulks may attempt to boardfortress monasteries, since only they can possiblycarry enough troops. Even then, the fortress-monastery has a +2 modifier for being SpaceMarines before any other modifiers are taken intoaccount.

Damage Control and Catastrophic Damage Damage control is also undertaken individually, as isfor a Ramilies Star Fortress. The fortress-monasteryis only destroyed when all four quadrants arereduced to zero damage, at which time the owning

player rolls against the catast rophic damage table on p. 34 of Armada.

Thunderhawks While a fortress-monastery has sufficient launch

bays to unleash great swarms of Thunderhawks, these large and complex gunships are in limitedsupply and are not necessarily all based on thefortress-monastery at any given time, having beendispatched to other vessels within the fleet. It doeshowever provide a base for them to home back toshould t heir original carriers be lost. A Space Marine

fleet may always count its launch limit as equal tothe surviving bays on the fortress-monastery or inthe normal manner, whichever is greater. This isinstead of the double remaining launch bays ruleof a Ramilies Star Fortress, and it may only launchas many Thunderhawks as needed to bring the fleetup to its launch limit. If the fleet has a launch limitof 17 and 12 markers are already in play, theFortress-monastery can only launch 5 moreThunderhawk markers from the fortress-monasteryor from other ships in the fleet.

    2010 COMPENDIUM 57.

A battle barge is not a class of vessel, but rather it isthe name given to any vessel configured to fulfill therole of battle barge. Because of this, it istheoretically possible for any large capital ship to

fulfill this role, although the battle barges speciallydesigned for the Space Marines by the AdeptusMechanicus are the most common example. However, some older Chapters, particularly thosedating back to the First Founding, maintain muchmore ancient and revered vessels dating back to atime when the Adeptus Astartes and the Imperial

Navy were more closely united than they now areand commonly employed reconfigured Navy vesselsas battle barges. Such vessels are completely unique;indeed, some of them were later used as the basis fornew Imperial Navy ship classes, and as such aregreatly venerated by the Space Marines.

Some Chapters rely on truly unique vessels impartedupon them for a specific role or to meet some direthreat. Others simply retain vessels they receivedmillennia ago or gained through other means. TheSpace Wolves, a traditionally minded Chapter, ismore immersed in the customs of its homeworld ofFenris than most Chapters and has access to only themost rudimentary of shipyards, and they are perhapsthe best known example of this, relying as they do

on an Emperor-class battleship to fulfill the role of battle barge.

Choosing a Battle BargeIn addition to their fleet list, any Sp ace M arine fleetmay include a single Venerable battle barge(meaning only one!), which may be any Imperial orChaos battleship, grand cruiser, battlecruiser orheavy cruiser (painted appropriately of course!).This replaces one of the battle barges allowed in thefleet. The normal cost must be paid for the ship, plusan additional +35 points for the cost of the SpaceM arine crew. T his vessel represents an ancient, revered icon or a vessel granted with specialdispensation. It is worth 100% victory points ifcrippled or 150% victory points if destroyed.

A Venerable battle barge benefits from all the SpaceM arine special rules, but since it is already heavilyreconfigured to make it into a battle barge, it maynot be given any of the optional refits or upgradeslisted in its profile it must be used exactly as is, inits basic form. For example, a Mars battlecruisertaken as a Venerable battle barge may not be given asalvaged targeting matrix for +15 points and canonly earn such a refit in the course of a campaignnormally. The only exceptions to this are the specialrefits that the Space Marines themselves make to

    their battle barges, as follows.

Launch Bays and ThunderhawksAny launch bays on a Venerable battle barge havetheir launch capacity halved (rounding up). Forexample, an Imperial Mars battlecruiser with twolaunch bays each side is reduced to one each side, and a Chaos Styx heavy cruiser with three launch

bays on each side is reduced t o t wo each side. T helaunch bays are configured to carry Thunderhawksfollowing the rules detailed beforehand and on p.21of Armada, and they cannot be used to launch anyother form of attack craft. This is a compulsory refitthat applies to all Venerable battle barges equippedwith launch bays. A Venerable battle barge notequipped with launch bays cannot takeThunderhawks.

Prow Weapons and Boarding Torpedoes Any Venerable battle barge equipped with a prowweapon (regardless of what it is) may if desiredreplace it with strength-6 torpedo tubes (speed:30cm) for no change in cost. As with all SpaceMarine vessels, these tubes may also be used tolaunch boarding torpedoes. These boardingtorpedoes are manned by Space Marines and get a+1 to their hit and run attacks when they hit anenemy ship.

VENERABLE BATTLE BARGE SEDITIO OPPRIMERE . . . . . . . . . . . 450 Points First recognized for the threat it was in 745.M41,Hive Fleet Behemoth ravaged the Imperial worlds ofUltima Segmentum until it began encroaching uponthe Ultramar sub-sector, dominion of theUltramarines Chapter. The Seditio Opprimere was

reduced to a near hulk at the Battle of Prandium asthe Ty ranids reduced to a barren wasteland what wasonce a fertile and lush garden world, the Jewel ofUltramar. Despite the great Imperial victorydefeating Behemoth in the Ultramar home systemabove the rings of Circe, the Imperial Navy facedstaggering losses, and the Ultramarines faced littleresistance when the Mechanicus Adepts of Calthrebuilt it as a powerful gunship with the weapons fitand defenses to burn through the miasma of sporeclouds when fighting the Tyranids. Designing suchimprovements into the vessel proved difficult, andsome launch bay capacity had to be sacrificed forthe additional magma bomb magazines and energyconduits for it s up graded defenses.

Representi ng the Se ditio O pprimere The Seditio Opprimere r epresents a venerable battlebarge as-is and does not need to pay +35 points forhaving Space Marines. It can easily be modeled byconstructing a Space Marine battle barge normallybut substituting two lance batteries from the

Imperial plastic cruiser sprue on each s ide insteadof the gun decks that come with the model.

SPACE MARINE STRIKE CRUISER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 145 oints Like battle barges of the Adeptus Astartes, strikecruisers do not represent a single class of vessel butinstead consist of a broad range of types withdiffering weapons and systems designed primarilyfor rapid response, able to quickly fight their way

into a contested system and rapidly deliver SpaceMarines and their wargear to the front. To this endstrike cruisers can and do take a variety of forms.

Like venerable battle barges of old, a number ofstrike cruiser designs date far back to the centuriesimmediately following the development of theCodex Astartes. While most Chapters with limitedresources will typically operate a single type ofstrike cruiser, it is not uncommon for some tooperate two or more distinct types andconfigurations of strike cruisers with slightlydiffering capabilities and weapon arrangements, especially among the older Chapters with histories

dating back several millennia. The effectiveness ofstrike cruisers has not gone unnoticed by theImperial Navy. In the intervening millennia, theyinspired not only the creation and implementation oflight cruisers by the Imperial Navy, but variousweapon configurations lent themselves to a numberof light cruiser classes used throughout theImperium.

    Strike Cruiser Variants

Throughout the Imperium of Man, the various Adeptus Astartes Chapters utilize strike cruisers that while the samein essential p urpose, sometimes tend to differ significantly in details, app earance and specific weapons arrangement. They may incorporate the following refits for the point costs indicated.

Replace launch bays. A strike cruiser may replace its launch bays for strength-6, Speed: 30cm torpedo tubes or afirepower-5, range 30cm (front arc only) bombardment cannon battery for no change in cost. Torp edo tubes may firenormal or boarding t orpedoes.

Replace bombardment cannon. A strike cruiser may replace its prow firepower-3, Left/Front/Right bombardmentcannon for a strength-1, range: 30cm lance firing Left/Front/Right for +20 p oints.

At a minimum, as many strike cruisers in the fleet must be of the bas ic pr ofile listed above as all other v ariantscombined. Additionally, any number of strike cruisers can each purchase an additional shield for +15 points.

    USING A SPACE MARINE

    CRUSADE FLEET

The Crusade Fleet List represents all the mostaggressive, zealous and insular Space MarineChapters, most notably the Black Templars. They donot rule over great swaths of the Imperium as otherChapters might, and few of them even have ahomeworld of their own. Instead, these crusadingarmies endlessly roam the galaxy, engaged in nearconstant warfare with the Emperors enemies (or insome cases, in endless pursuit of their own ancientfoes). This same zeal breeds in them a great distrustof non-Space Marines, indeed a distrust even ofother Chapters, who they believe incapable of thesame purity which they themselves make a virtue, meaning they will seldom, if ever, seek the aid ofother arms of the Imperium.

As well as true Crusade Chapters, the fleet list aboveis ideal for representing fleet-based Chapters,

part icularly those that operate from a fortress -monastery, such as the Fire Hawks or Dark Angels. While not strictly a Crusading Chapter, this list is

part icularly suited to the Dark Angels, since itrepresents their famously secretive method of

operation. Other Chapt ers, such as the Imperial Fist s,the Crimson Fists and so on, occasionally launchCrusades though not exclusively, so they can beequally well represented by this fleet list or the

Codex Astartes fleet list on p.30 of Armada.Ordnance and Upgrades Any ship with launch bays carries Thunderhawksand Thunderhawk Annihilators. Ships with torpedotubes are armed with ordinary and boardingtorpedoes. All Space Marine capital ships areequipped with drop pods. Any battle barge or strikecruiser in the fleet may be equipped with an HonorGuard for +10 points per ship. A fortress-monasteryis equipped with Terminator boarding parties and anHonor Guard as part of its point cost.

Attack RatingA Space Marine Crusade Fleet has an attack ratingof 3. If the fleet includes a fortress-monastery, it hasan attack rating of 1; even Space Marines find itdifficult to launch a surprise blitz with a billion tonsof fortress monastery in tow!

ScenariosA Space Marine Crusade fleet with a fortress-monastery will always be the defender in a scenario.Players should use any method desired to pick ascenario, assigning the Crusade fleet as the defender. An alternative is to determine the attacker anddefender normally with the Space M arine playerelecting if desired to use the fortress monastery ifselected as the defender. Like the rules for aRamilies Star Fortress, the fortress-monastery shouldonly be used as a defense or in some scenariossubstituting for the planet itself.

Reserves and AlliesA Space Marine Crusade fleet will not take shipsfrom or provide ships to any other fleet list asreserves or allies, including Imperial Navy, RogueTrader or Adeptus Mechanicus fleet lists.

poin t USING A SPACE MARINEDOMINION FLEET

The M aster of each Space Marine Chapt er is itsleader and spiritual head. He leads his troops in

battle and acts as the figurehead for the entireChapter. As some Chapters rule entire planets oreven sub-sectors of space, a Chapter Master maywell act as the head of government as well, effectively as the Imperial Commander of a whole

planet or sy stem. Particular examples are theUltramarines, who rule over the dominion ofUltramar, and the Salamanders, which enjoy closeties with the people of Prometheus.

Where this is the case, other local military assets, though not strictly subservient to the Chapter andwith their own command structures in place, willnonetheless find themselves more often under thesway of their superhuman neighbors than mightother independent regiments and fleets from regionsnot ruled by Space Marines. Any contact with SpaceM arines st rikes a mixture of fear and awe in the

hearts of mortal men, and such preeminence occursnaturally wherever man and Marine stand side byside. In such circumstances Space Marinecommanders will assume overall control for the

defense of a region, though they are inevitably toofew in number to enact such plans themselves.Where a Chapter holds sway over such a dominion,Space M arine fleets and vessels of t he Imperial Navywill oft en be found acting in concert.

Ordnance and Upgrades Any Space Marines capital ships wit h launch bayscarry Thunderhawk gunships. Any vessel with aSpace Marine Captain can have an Honor Guard for+10 points. Imperial Navy vessels are equipped withtheir own standard ordnance (even if they haveSpace M arine Captains) and cannot be given anyform of Space M arine upgrade. This includes those

listed on the table on p.157 of the rulebook.Attack RatingA Sp ace Marine Dominion Fleet has an attack ratingof 3. T his is reduced to 2 if the fleet has any Imp erial

Navy, M echanicus or Rogue Trader vessels at all.

Reserves and Alli esA Space Marine Dominion Fleet has close ties withnearby Imperial Navy forces. Contrary to the normalrules, a dominion fleet can take Imperial Navyvessels as normal reserves and reinforcements, including Adeptus Mechanicus and non-xenosRogue Trader vessels. For purposes of choosingreserves, battle barges count as battleships, andstrike cruisers count as cruisers for the selection ofany cruiser (battlecruiser, etc.) type. When reservesare taken in this manner, the fleet can have up totwelve cruisers. However, in the course of acampaign, a Dominion Fleet cannot takereinforcements from the Space Marines table listedon p.157 of the Battlefleet Gothic rulebook.
