We need better local “maps”!• We will design and deploy a routing measurement platform in our
region.– To have better local maps we need more local data
• What do my neighbours know about my network?• What does my neighbourhood look like?• Could I do better by connecting to new peers?• Can I detect and troubleshoot routing issues faster?
– Sure you can!!

Benefits• To network operators
– BGP session status– Routing table size– Real time BGP messages– Reachability of prefixes– Alerts, etc.
• Globally– Improved routing stability/robustness understanding– Improved Internet topology understanding

Security/Privacy Concern?• Are you concerned to share routing data?
– You shouldn’t!
• It’s no secret that the streets in Kathmandu are quite busy, is it?
• BGP data is public anyway– You are sharing it with your neighbours, who in turn are sharing it
with their neighbours and so on and so forth.
• By sharing it with a data collector you are just making it easier to have more and better points of view

Concerns About Costs?• Are you afraid this could increment your transit costs?
– No traffic will be sent through the BGP sessions established with us– Just BGP messages
• Are you concerned about the effort/time you will have to invest on this?– Establishing the BGP session will just take a few minutes on your
side (see next slide J)– No maintenance is required

1st Nepalese feed!!• In less than half an hour:
– A BGP session between Isolario and Websurfer was up and running– Krishna and Sachindra had credentials to access Isolario Web Portal
and start playing with the tools

Yet another BGP feed?• Are you already participating in any BGP Data Collection project?
– RouteViews– RIPE NCC’s RIS– Packet Clearing House– ??
• But!– These are all independent efforts. No single view of the Internet as a whole.– There are not that many collectors in the AP region
• So… we are also working on another project :)– Collaborative Project to Integrate Collected BGP Data
• In collaboration with other BGP data collection projects• Define a data format and technical solution to integrate the BGP data that is already available

Wrapping up• We’ve been trying to understand the AP region observing it from
far far away.
• We want to create better local maps of the Internet to be able to:– Detect and troubleshoot issues faster– Identify opportunities of better interconnection– Understand better the Internet topology
• We need YOU to be on-board!

Are you interested in participating?• Let me know• Give me your business card• Let’s set up a BGP session• And start creating better maps to see things in more detail!
