    MURDER OF JOHN P. SAUNDERS

THE MURDER OF LALA LAJPAT RAI FORMED A REVENGETAKING SITUATION IN THE HINDUSTAN REPUBLICANASSOCIATION. However, when the matter was raised inthe British Parliament, the British Governmentdenied any role in Rai's death.[17] Although Singh didnot witness the event,[14]he vowed to takerevenge,[17] and joined otherrevolutionaries,Shivaram Rajguru,SukhdevThaparand Chandrashekhar Azad, in a plot to killScott.[10] However, in a case of mistaken identity,Singh received a signal to shoot on the appearanceof John P. Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent ofPolice. He was shot by Rajguru and Singh whileleaving the District Police Headquarters in Lahoreat about 4:15 pm on 17 December 1928.

BOMB THROWN IN THE PARLIAMENT OFBRITISH

To subdue the rise of revolutionaries like BhagatSingh in the country, the British government decidedto implement theDefence of India Act 1915, whichgave the police a free hand.[Singh proposed to the

HSRA his plan to explode a bomb inside the CentralLegislative Assembly, which was agreed to. Initiallyit was decided that Batukeshwar Dutt and Sukhdevwould plant the bomb while Bhagat Singh wouldtravel to theUSSR. However later the plan was

changed. He entrusted Dutt to plant the bomb.[26]

On 8April 1929, Singh and Dutt threw two bombs inside theassembly rushing from Visitor's Gallery. The smokefrom the bomb filled the Hall and they shoutedslogans of "Inquilab Zindabad!" (in Hindustaniwhichmeans "Long Live the Revolution!") SINGH AND

BATUKESHWAR DUTT WERE CHARDED IN THIS CASE.2

    BHAGAT SINGH AND BATUKESHWAR

DUTT WENT TOJAIL Singh and Dutt were charged withattempt to murder, and the trial beganon 7 May 1929.[30] Doubts have beenraised about the accuracy of testimony

offered at the trial. One keydiscrepancy related to the automaticpistol that Singh had been carryingprior to his arrest. One witness,Sobha

Singh, told the court that Singh had

been firing the pistol two or three timesbefore it jammed, and some policemenstated that Singh was pointing the gunwhen they arrived.

    HUNGER STRIKE

38] Singh was sent to the Mianwali jail from the Delhi jail,[31] where he

witnessed discrimination between European and Indian prisoners, andled other prisoners in a hunger strike to protest this illegaldiscrimination. They demanded equality in standards of food, clothing,

toiletries and other hygienic necessities, as well as availability ofbooks and a daily newspaper for the political prisoners,[39] who they

demanded should not be forced to do manual labour or any undignifiedwork in the jail,[40] as detailed in their letter to the Home Member on24 June 1929.[4 Since the activities of the hunger strikers had gainedpopularity and attention amongst the people nationwide, thegovernment decided to advance the start of the Saunders murder

trial, which was henceforth called the Lahore Conspiracy Case. Singhwas transported to Borstal Jail, Lahore,[48] and the trial of this casebegan there on 10 July 1929. In addition to charging them for the

murder of Saunders, Singh and 27 other prisoners were charged withplotting a conspiracy to murder Scott and waging a war against theKing.[30] Singh, still on hunger strike, had to be carried to the courthandcuffed on a stretcher: he had lost 14 pounds (6.4 kg) weight from133 pounds (60 kg) before the strike.[THEREVOLUTIONRIES STRIKED FOR 63DAYS8] 1]
