Women ‘partners’ in peacemakingTDT | Manama

Women play a major rolein decision-making to

establish peace and security in the world, Foreign Affairs Ministry Undersecretary Dr Shaikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa said.

Also a member of Supreme Council for Women (SCW) and chairman of MoFA’s Equal Opportunities Committee, Dr Shaikha Rana was speaking at the opening of the celebrations for the one-year anniversary of the launch of the Global Alliance of Regional Women Mediator Networks via video-conference.

Dr Shaikha Rana noted in her speech that Bahrain, in imple-mentation of the pledge it made 25 years ago during the Fourth World Conference on Wom-en in Beijing in 1995, and the commitments contained in the Beijing Declaration and Plat-form of Action, together with Security Council Resolution 1325 of 2000, seek to ensure the equal participation of men and women at all levels.

It is especially at the level of decision-making and the in-volvement of women in conflict prevention and peace building and maintenance processes, af-

firming that women play a ma-jor role in establishing peace.

Dr Shaikha Rana underlined that the efforts made by women to establish peace and domestic and international security are very clear.

And although Arab women

vary in their exposure to armed conflicts, they still have a great role in peacemaking and reso-lution of disputes.

Dr Shaikha Rana noted that a Bahraini woman, despite being in a stable region far from the possibility of an armed con-flict, does not mean that she is far from fulfilling her role in providing support services and backing women in broth-erly states subjected to armed conflict.

She reviewed a number of Bahrain’s initiatives in this re-gard, including establishing Bahrain Health Centre in Aden, and forming the Civil Defence Council and National Disaster Management Committee by the Ministry of Interior in the King-dom to take measures related to handling emergencies.

A source of prideBahrain committed to keeping gains in women’s advancement

• Role in publiclife highlighted

• Call for sustaineddevelopment

TDT | Manama

Bahrain is determined to keep its commitment and gains in the field of wom-

en’s advancement, said Supreme Council for Women (SCW) sec-retary-general Hala Al Ansari, describing them as a “source of pride.”

She emphasised that the King-dom’s commitment towards women’s advancement is deeply rooted, citing Bahraini women’s early education, voting in mu-nicipal elections and economic participation in vital sectors, such as health, banks, judiciary, engineering, among others.

Al Ansari made the statements during her participation in a we-binar organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Bahrain Embassy to US, in co-operation with the Wil-son Centre, marking the 25th

anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Bei-jing, China, and the adoption of the “Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action”.

This forum coincides with the Kingdom’s celebration of the Bahraini Women’s Day, which will honour women in the dip-lomatic field.

Al Ansari noted that wom-en’s early active involvement in public life has resulted in a steady increase in their access to decision-making posts, as they became ministers, ambas-sadors and parliamentarians,

heads of specialised entities, in addition to reaching the helm of the Council of Representatives through free direct elections in

2018.M a i n t a i n i n g B a h r a i n ’s

achievements in women’s ad-vancement and optimising them is a challenge, Al Ansari said.

But despite the unprecedent-ed challenges resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, she stressed, Bahrain is following up on the changes and emerging opportunities in order to be able to adapt to the new situation, speed up the recovery process and carry on its national devel-opment process.

Bahrain realised early on, and through the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women which was first devised about 20 years ago, that nation-al development would not be possible unless it was based on the principles of equal partic-ipation of women and men in public life, and the integration

women’s needs in the national development programmes.

During the webinar, Al Ansari stressed Bahrain’s commitment to the “Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action” as a gener-al framework for women’s ad-vancement.

She noted that 25 years into its inception, the Declaration remains a major reference and a source of guidance and inspi-ration.

Al Ansari pointed out that Bahrain believes that in order to better benefit from the Decla-

ration that encourages and sup-ports sustained development of women and girls all over the world, there is a need to devel-op flexible evaluation and fol-low-up procedures.

And that takes into account the risk elements and the ex-ceptional circumstances, as well as to develop the methodology of preparing periodic report to encourage and support knowl-edge management and transfer, through shedding light on the best practices and the success stories.

pass the torch on to my daughter, Sereen,” said Al Qashar. “We are truly blessed to have started the relationship with the next gen-eration on such a positive note,” he said. “The long relationship with the Bank made winning the third Thimaar grand prize of the year even more significant, and I was overwhelmed to learn that my daughter has won,” said Al Qashar. “Thankfully, our dream

of winning has come true with the bank confirming that my daughter is the winner. My fam-ily and I were delighted to hear this exciting news,” he said.

“We started saving with the dream of winning one of the grand prizes. I opened a Thimaar account after observ-ing the bank’s advertisements. I noticed that Thimaar account offers prizes to the highest num-ber of winners, with many valu-able prizes which made me con-sider opening Thimaar account for my children. I would also like to highlight that the bank provides many services to make customers’ banking transactions easier through the mobile ap-plication and online, especially during the pandemic. This made me encourage my friends and family to continue to save more in prize-based saving accounts such as Thimaar account,” he said.

“On behalf of all of us at Ith-maar Bank, I congratulate Ser-een, her father and her family on winning the third Thimaar Quarterly Prize of the year, as well as all the other Thimaar winners of this month,” said Al Mutawa. “Regular savings can offer important benefits long into the future, and is a great habit to build early in life,” he said.

“Ithmaar Bank offers the high-

est number of prizes of any simi-lar scheme in Bahrain, providing additional incentives for savers,” said Al Mutawa “With anoth-er grand prize of US$1 million coming up this year, our forth-coming winner will be another Thimaar millionaire. These po-tential life-changing prizes can be won with a little as a single BD30 deposit, and the more you save and the longer you wait the bigger your chances,” he said.

Thimaar, Arabic for fruits or harvest, is a prize-based saving account that Ithmaar Bank in-troduced to help encourage its customers to save. To mark the account’s tenth anniversary, the bank announced it is offering more prizes and more chanc-es to win, with over US$ 4 mil-lion up for grabs to more than

3,000 winners this year. With this announcement, Ithmaar Bank will have distributed more than US$ 26 million in prizes to almost 29,000 customers, in the ten years since it launched Thimaar, making it one of the most rewarding saving schemes in Bahrain.

100 monthly prizesThis year’s Thimaar prizes

include 100 monthly prizes, three quarterly prizes worth US$200,000 each, and a grand prize worth US$1 million. In ap-preciation of the bank’s loyal customers, the Thimaar loyalty draws offer 90 monthly prizes to customers who have not won a prize before.

There are also 60 month-ly Junior prizes for the bank’s younger customers. Addition-ally, this year, Thimaar will dis-tribute prizes to two monthly Elite customers for depositing amounts of BD 50,000 and above.

Along with cash prizes, the Thimaar account offers a profit rate on the balance maintained. Customers are entered into the draws by maintaining a mini-mum balance of BD 30 in their Thimaar account. Customers can now open a Thimaar ac-count online by visiting www.ithmaarbank.com/mobile-app from their mobile device at any time, from anywhere.

Batelco holds series of Cybersecurity Webinars TDT | Manama

Batelco recently launched aseries of webinars focused

on topics related to cybersecu-rity, including next-generation firewalls, cloud assets, con-verged security and the new standards in wireless data for business customers. Batelco has hosted 5 webinars to date cover-ing various topics.

Cybersecurity is growing in importance as the majority of companies collect, process, and store large amounts of data on computers and other devices and need to protect this data and the systems used to pro-cess and store it. According to a Cybersecurity Ventures re-

port, it is predicted by 2021, a business will be exposed to a cybersecurity attack every 11 seconds.

Commenting on the pro-

gramme, Batelco Enterprise General Manager Abderrah-mane Mounir said the webinars aim at enhancing the knowl-edge of participants across

the field of cybersecurity and increase their understanding of the various solutions and tools available to protect their business.

Saudi Arabia’s finance minister said yesterday that the kingdom’s Vision

2030 to diversify the economy away from oil has been “tried and tested”, particularly dur-ing the coronavirus pandemic.

“It proved to be the right plan. The economy was able actually to deal with it (the coronavirus crisis), the gov-ernment was able to deal with it in a very adequate way,” Mo-hammed al-Jadaan said.

He added that Saudi Ara-bia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, was investing to catalyse the

Pandemic accelerates need for digital currency: Bank of Canada• Global centralbanks are putting together rules and working on their own digital currencies

Reuters | Ottawa

The COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating the public’s use of online services and

that means the Bank of Cana-da must move more quickly to research how a central bank digital product would work, a top official said yesterday.

The Bank of Canada has been exploring and building capacity for products like a central bank digital currency (CBDC), but there has been no specific time

frame for launching one, Deputy Governor Tim Lane said during a panel discussion on the future of money.

“The main point, I think, is this is all looking a lot more ur-gent because of the speed with which technology is evolving,” said Lane.

“With COVID, we’ve seen an acceleration of the shift of activ-ities online and that suggests if

we want to be ready to develop any kind of digital central bank product, we need to move faster than we thought was going to be necessary,” he said.

Lane has previously said that the Bank of Canada could launch a CBDC if a private cryp-tocurrency were to make seri-ous inroads, creating privacy concerns.

Global central banks are put-ting together rules and work-ing on their own digital curren-cies to address the prospect of private cryptocurrencies, like Facebook Inc’s  FB.O  planned Libra stablecoin. Lane told the panel that a number of stake-holders need to be consulted on issuing a CBDC, including banks and financial institutions, along with technology companies.

“Certainly we’re talking to a

number of companies that have products that they are develop-ing or also are advising in these things,” he said.

On Tuesday, financial lead-ers of the world’s seven biggest economies said no stablecoin operation should start until it is properly regulated.

Johnson is ‘disappointed’Reuters | London

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the head of

the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that he was disappointed there had not been more progress in Brexit trade talks, his office said yesterday.

“The Prime Minister noted the desirability of a deal, but expressed his disappointment that more progress had not

been made over the past two weeks,” his office said in a statement, after Johnson spoke by phone to von Der Leyen and Charles Michel, president of the European Council.

“The Prime Minister said that he looked forward to hearing the outcome of the European Council and would reflect before setting out the UK’s next steps in the light of his statement of 7 September.”

News in brief u Thousands of Thai protesters marched on the prime minister’s office to demand his resignation after scuffling with royalists opposed to the youth-led movement’s calls for reforms to the monarchy. Student activists have staged huge rallies recently calling for Premier Prayut Chan-o-cha, a former army chief who took power in a coup six years ago, to step down. But some protesters have also demanded reforms to the country’s powerful monarchy.

u Rwanda has approved the production of medical cannabis strictly for export, seeking to target fast-growing markets in the United States and European Union, even though its use remains illegal at home. Guidelines for the production and export of medical cannabis were approved by the cabinet on Monday, and a government

statement said Wednesday that it would not change strict local laws around marijuana consumption.

u Two late-stage Covid-19 medical trials have been paused in the space of 24 hours over potential safety concerns, the latest setbacks to scientists in the long fight against the pandemic. US pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly on Tuesday suspended its Phase 3 trial of its lab-produced antibody treatment in hospitalized patients over an unspecified incident. A day earlier, the American pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson temporarily halted its Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial due to an unexplained illness in a study participant. Last month, British firm AstraZeneca became the first in the world to announce a pause of its vaccine trials after one patient in Britain was diagnosed with an inflammatory condition affecting the spine. The trial was later resumed around the world but remains suspended in the US for reasons that are unclear.

u Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday he will announce the total size of gas reserves found in the country’s largest-ever discovery when he visits a drill ship in the Black Sea on Saturday. In August, Erdogan hailed the discovery of a 320 billion cubic metre (bcm) (11.3 trillion cubic feet) Black Sea field about 100 nautical miles north of the Turkish coast. He said

at the time it was part of even bigger reserves and could come on stream as soon as 2023. If the gas can be commercially extracted, it could lessen Turkey’s dependence on Russia, Iran

and Azerbaijan for energy imports.

u Russia has granted regulatory approval to a second COVID-19 vaccine, according to its register of authorised medicines. A delighted President Vladimir Putin announced the news at a government meeting yesterday. The jab was developed by the Vector Institute in Siberia and completed early-stage human trials last month. However, results have not been published yet and a large-scale trial, known as Phase III, has not yet begun.

Karabakh fighting widens• Hundreds have already lost their lives in two weeks of fighting

• Armenia confirmed that military positions inside the country had been hit

Agencies

Azerbaijan said yesterday it had destroyed missile launchers inside Arme-

nia that were targeting its cit-ies, as fierce fighting over Na-gorno-Karabakh risked widen-ing beyond the disputed region.

Hundreds have already lost their lives in two weeks of fight-ing, and continued clashes have rendered almost meaningless a humanitarian ceasefire agreed in Moscow last week.

Armenia confirmed that mili-tary positions inside the country had been hit but denied its forc-es had been firing into Azerbai-jan. It warned that it too could start targeting military sites inside its adversary’s territory.

Clashes over Nagorno-Kara-bakh -- where Armenia-backed separatist fighters are battling Azerbaijani forces -- have been

largely confined to areas in and around the region since a fresh outbreak of fighting started last month.

Direct confrontations be-tween Armenia and Azerbaijan risk spiralling into an all-out, multi-front war with devastat-ing consequences for both sides.

Azerbaijan’s defence ministry said in statements Wednesday that it had destroyed ballistic missile launchers deployed in Armenia in two separate attacks overnight.

The OTR-21 Tochka mobile systems were in areas of Arme-nia bordering the Kalbajar dis-trict of Azerbaijan that is under separatist control, it said.

Launchers at the first site were aiming at the Azerbaija-ni cities of Ganja, Mingachevir and other populated areas, it said. Armenian defence min-istry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan confirmed that mil-itary positions in the area had been hit. But she denied that Armenian forces had ever fired “a single missile, shell or projec-tile” inside Azerbaijan.

Armenia’s military now “re-serves the right to target any military installations and com-bat movements on the territo-ry of Azerbaijan”, she said on Twitter.

Russia disagrees with Turkey’s position on Karabakh conflict

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said yes-

terday that Moscow disa-greed with Turkey’s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and that a military solution was unacceptable.

“We do not agree with the position voiced by Turkey, that was also expressed sev-eral times by (Azeri) Presi-dent Aliyev,” Lavrov said in an interview with local radio stations. “It is not a secret that we cannot agree with a statement that a military solution to the conflict is per-missible.”

Lavrov added that it would be right to deploy Russian military observers on the line of contact in Nagorno-Kara-bakh, but that it was up to Azerbaijan and Armenia to decide.

Robot dolphins could signal end

of captive animals

Reuters | California

Darting around the pool as a group of swimmers stands

in the shallow end, the dolphin looks much like those that jump through hoops and perform acro-batics at theme parks.

But this marine creature is a robot.

“When I first saw the dolphin, I thought it could be real,” said a woman who swam with the re-mote-controlled creature.

Edge Innovations, a US engi-neering company with an ani-matronic and special effects di-vision in California, designed the dolphin for an educational pilot programme.

It hopes that life-like anima-tronics used in Hollywood movies could one day entertain crowds at theme parks, instead of wild animals held in captivity. Swim-mers could dive with robotic great

white sharks or even reptiles that filled Jurassic-era seas millions of years ago.

“There are like 3,000 dolphins currently in captivity being used to generate several billions of dol-lars just for dolphin experienc-es. And so there’s obviously an appetite to love and learn about dolphins,” said Edge Innovations founder and CEO Walt Conti.

“And so we want to use that appetite and offer kind of differ-ent ways to fall in love with the dolphin.”

A n i m a t ro n i c s m a y b r i n g back audiences turned off by parks using live animals, said Conti.

Edge also made the aquat-ic creatures used in Hollywood blockbusters “Free Willy,” “Deep Blue Sea” and “Anaconda.”

“The idea of this pilot is really to create a kind of “Sesame Street” under water,” said Roger Holz-berg, creative director for Edge’s animatronic programme.

Kremlin says no arms deal yet with USReuters | Moscow

Th e K r e m l i n sa id yesterday

that Russia had not clinched a deal with the United States to extend the New START arms pact, the last major nuclear trea-ty between the two countries, despite US assertions suggesting significant progress.

US officials have in-dicated on social me-dia that an agreement to extend it has been reached in principle.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that no deal had yet been reached despite what the Kremlin hoped was a joint under-standing that the pact did need to be extend-

ed. “As for the under-standing for the need to extent the START treaty, we hope we are on the same track in this regard,” Peskov said on a conference call with reporters.”

News in brief u Pandemic restrictions saw an unprecedented fall in greenhouse gas emissions in the first half of 2020 -- larger than during the 2008 financial crisis and even World War II -- experts said yesterda. As governments ordered lockdowns to try to crush the first wave of Covid-19, CO2 emissions from transport, power and aviation plummeted, the international team of researchers said. Using data including hourly electricity production, vehicle traffic from more than 400 cities worldwide, daily passenger flights and monthly production and consumption figures, they determined that the year-on-year emissions drop of 8.8 percent was the largest in modern history. They noted however that emissions had rebounded to their usual levels by July 2020, when most nations had eased lockdown measures.

Somali insurgents pile up cash, says UN report

Reuters | New York/Nairobi

Somalia’s Islamist insurgents are moving millions of dol-

lars through the formal bank system and appear to be in-vesting in businesses and real estate, according to a United Nations report offering a rare glimpse into their finances.

Al Shabaab has for years been battling Somalia’s inter-nationally-backed government to impose strict Islamic law in the anarchic Horn of Africa nation.

“Al Shabaab remains in a strong financial position and is generating a significant budgetary surplus, some of which is invested in property purchases and businesses in Mogadishu,” said the report by the U.N. sanctions panel on Somalia.

The report by the group, which monitors compliance with an arms embargo on So-malia, is due to be published this week.

The al Qaeda-linked Somali

militants carry out frequent bombings and attacks at home and have also killed hundreds of civilians in Kenya and Ugan-da. Earlier this year, al Shabaab killed three Americans at a U.S. military base in Kenya.

The U.N. report included details on two bank accounts held at Salaam Somali Bank, founded in 2009 as part of the Hormuud group of companies, raising questions about Soma-lia’s capacity to enforce a 2016 law aimed at curbing terrorist financing.

The bank did not respond to requests for comment.

Somalia’s Financial Report-ing Center, which oversees compliance laws against mon-ey laundering and terror fi-nancing, said it is investigating the allegations against Salaam.

Nearly $1.7 million moved through one of the accounts during a 10-week period until mid-July this year, the report said, noting the account ap-peared set up to receive Islam-ic tax called zakat.

UAE joins NASA’s ‘Artemis Accords’• Founding members are Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States

AFP News

The United Arab Emirates is among the eight found-

ing members of NASA’s Artemis Accords that outlines the prin-ciples of future exploration of the Moon and beyond.

The treaty paves the way for its founding members -- Aus-tralia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Britain and the United States -- to participate in NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to return humans to Earth’s nearest neighbour

by 2024.“Artemis will be the broadest

and most diverse international human space exploration pro-gram in history, and the Artemis Accords are the vehicle that will establish this singular global coalition,” said NASA Adminis-trator Jim Bridenstine.

“With today’s signing, we are

uniting with our partners to explore the Moon and are es-tablishing vital principles that will create a safe, peaceful, and prosperous future in space for all of humanity to enjoy.”

While NASA is leading the Artemis programme, it has emphasized the need for inter-national partnerships in build-

ing up a sustainable presence on the Moon, something the agency views as key ahead of an eventual human mission to Mars.

The agency hopes, for exam-ple, to excavate ice from the Moon’s south pole to supply both drinking water and to split the molecules apart to make rocket fuel for the onward jour-ney. It also plans to establish an orbital space station called Gateway.

NASA said the Artemis Ac-cords reinforce and implement the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, and are split broadly into 10 principles.

The signatories commit, for example, to adhering to peace-ful exploration in a transparent manner, to create hardware sys-tems that are operable by every member nation, and to register their space objects.

10,000 more children a month could die of malnutrition due to COVID: WHO

Reuters | London

The director general of the World Health Or-

ganisation said on Wednes-day an additional 10,000 children a month could die this year from malnutrition as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghe-breyesus, speaking at a UN Food and Agriculture (FAO) conference, said he expect-ed a 14 per cent increase this year in children suffering from malnutrition as a re-sult of the pandemic.

This equates to 6.7 mil-lion more malnourished children, mostly in sub-Sa-haran Africa and south Asia.

“ T h e p a n d e m i c h a s caused serious disruptions to essential services, immu-nisation, maternal services, child nutrition, family plan-ning and more,” he said.

“We can not accept a world where the rich have access to healthy diets while the poor are left behind,” he added.

Dinosaur skeleton fetches $3.52m• The skeleton of the Allosaurus dinosaur, dug up in the US state of Wyoming three years ago

Reuters | Paris

The near-complete skeleton of a carnivorous dinosaur

which roamed the earth around 150 million years ago was sold at a Paris auction house on Tuesday for 3 million euros ($3.52 million).

The skeleton of the Allo-saurus dinosaur, dug up in the US state of Wyoming three years ago, went to an unnamed for-eign buyer for well in excess of the 1 million euro starting price.

“This is a high grade spec-imen,” said Iacopo Briano, a palaeontologist who acted as a consultant to the Binoche et Giquello auction house which

conducted the sale. The specimen is unusual be-

cause it is so complete: around 70 percent of the bones are present, and they were found aligned with each other, mak-ing it easier to reconnect them during the restoration process.

The restored skeleton stands 3.5 metres (11 feet) high and 10 metres long. The ribcage bears the marks of what the auction-eers said may have been an at-

tack by a rival Allosaurus or a predator.

Humidity affects spread of COVID-19: SupercomputerReuters | Tokyo

A Japanese supercomput-er showed that humidity can have a large effect

on the dispersion of virus par-ticles, pointing to heightened coronavirus contagion risks in dry, indoor conditions during the winter months.

The finding suggests that the use of humidifiers may help limit infections during times when window ventilation is not possible, according to a study released on Tuesday by research giant Riken and Kobe University.

The researchers used the Fu-gaku supercomputer to model the emission and flow of vi-rus-like particles from infected people in a variety of indoor environments.

Air humidity of lower than 30 per cent resulted in more than double the amount of aer-osolised particles compared to levels of 60pc or higher, the simulations showed.

The study also indicated that clear face shields are not as ef-fective as masks in preventing the spread of aerosols. Other findings showed that diners are more at risk from people to

their side compared to across the table, and the number of singers in choruses should be limited and spaced out.

There has been a growing consensus among health ex-perts that the COVID-19 virus can be spread through the air. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its guidance this month to say the pathogen can linger in the air for hours.

The Riken research team led by Makoto Tsubokura has pre-viously used the Fugaku super-computer to model contagion conditions in trains, work spac-es, and class rooms.

Notably, the simulations showed that opening windows on commuter trains can in-crease the ventilation by two to three times, lowering the con-centration of ambient microbes.

“People’s blind fear or un-founded confidence against the infection of COVID-19 is simply because it is invisible,” Tsub-okura said.

First collection of Shakespeare’s plays sells for almost $10 millionReuters

A rare 1623 book that brought together Wil-

liam Shakespeare’s plays for the first time sold for a record $9.97 million at auction yes-terday, Christie’s in New York said.

The First Folio containing 36 of Shakespeare’s plays is one of only six known complete copies in private hands and had carried a pre-sale estimate of $4 million to $6 million.

The identity of the buyer was not immediately known.Wednesday’s auction price also marked a new world auction

record for any printed work of literature, and smashed the previous high of $6.16 million for a Shakespeare First Folio that was set in 2001, Christie’s said.

“Comedies, Histories and Tragedies” was compiled by friends of the English playwright and poet seven years after his death. It includes 18 plays that had never been published before and might have been lost, including “Macbeth” and “Julius Caesar.”

The book was put up for auction by Mills College, a private liberal arts college in Oakland, California.

The First Folio marked the first time that Shakespeare’s plays had been organized as comedies, tragedies and histories. The book’s large size - previously reserved for law books and works of theology - helped raise Shakespeare’s status in future years, Christie’s books experts said.

Kelly Clarkson reveals her kids are receiving therapyANI | Washington

American singer-songwrit-er Kelly Clarkson and her

estranged husband Brandon Blackstock have introduced therapy to their children to help them cope with their di-vorce, The Source reported.

According to Fox News, the

38-year-old TV show host and her husband Blackstock, share two children, 6-year-old Riv-er and 4-year-old Remington. In June, the ‘Stronger’ singer filed for divorce after 7 years of marriage.

Recently, Clarkson opened up about getting the children therapy to protect their “little

hearts.”The Because of You’ song-

stress told Extra, “It’s just one day when you’re like, ‘Wow, this has forever changed and it’s not just my heart has changed, there’s other little hearts, too.’”

Clarkson continued: “We have a lot of help as far as ther-

apists or child psychologists ‘cause we want to do it right.”

“I definitely want to do it right. Everyone’s sad and it’s OK to be sad,” she added.

‘The Voice’ coach has also been leaning on loved ones during her divorce.

The talk show host told the outlet, “I have a great fami-

ly and friends that are there for me. It’s a very hard thing to navigate, to be able, to be hon-est, and share your story, so maybe you can help someone else, but at the same time protecting these little kids you adore.”

first-round exit at the indoor ATP tournament in Cologne as he lost in straight sets to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.

In the last game of the day, Verdasco converted his fourth match point just after mid-night early yesterday morning to seal a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brit-ain’s Murray.

This is only the fourth tour-nament Murray has played in 2020 during a season disrupt-ed by injury which has seen his ranking drop to 115th.

The two -time Olympic champion is struggling to re-find his form after hip surgery earlier in the year.

“It was tough, I had a few chances, but I didn’t serve that well and these courts are quite slow, so it’s important to get break points which I didn’t get,” Murray said in Cologne.

“He played better than me.”Murray hopes to use the

back-to-back tournaments in Cologne to relaunch his season after a loop-sided first-round exit to Stan Wawrinka at the French Open last month and will stay on for next week’s indoor event.

“I plan to stay and play next week, get some practise in the next few days,” he said.

“It wasn’t that big an im-provement (on defeat to Waw-rinka), I need to practise, play matches and get better.”

This was Murray’s third straight defeat to Verdasco, ranked 62nd, who last beat the Scotsman twice in 2018, once at the Shenzhen tournament and also at that year’s US Open, yet Murray still leads the head-to-head 13-4.

Murray had the chance to level the second set with three break points at 5-4 down, but Verdasco kept up the pressure by firing down his sixth ace of the match to wrestle back control and eventually seal the win.

In the second round, the Spaniard faces Germany’s Al-exander Zverev.

Neymar hat-trick fires Brazil past Peru, Argentina labourNeymar scored two penalties as his hat-trick took him past Ronaldo as Brazil’s second highest scorer of all time

• Argentina squeeze past Bolivia

• Ecuador hammer Uruguay

AFP | Brazilia

Neymar scored a hat-trick to become the second highest scorer in Brazil’s

history as the Copa America champions won 4-2 away to 10-man Peru in a World Cup qual-ifier on Tuesday.

The goals took Neymar to 64 international strikes, two more than Ronaldo but still well be-hind Pele’s record of 77.

Elsewhere, Joaquin Correa scored the winner 11 minutes from time as Argentina labored to a 2-1 victory over Bolivia to maintain their 100% record af-ter two matches.

Peru twice took the lead through Andre Carrillo and a heavily deflected strike from Renato Tapia, but two contro-versial Neymar penalties, an injury time third and a close range strike from Richarlison maintained the Selecao’s win-ning start to qualifying for Qatar 2022.

Carrillo opened the scoring on six minutes with a dipping volley from 20 yards after latch-ing onto Marquinhos’s weak clearance.

Peru Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese then denied Firmino from point blank range after he seemed certain to tap home from Richarlison’s cushioned header.

Brazil dominated the ball but Peru’s pacey forwards looked dangerous on the counter-at-tack and visiting goalkeeper Weverton had to be alert to

keep out a shot from Christofer Gonzales.

But Neymar sent Gallese the wrong way from the spot after Yoshimar Yotun was penalised for tugging his shirt in the box.

Out of nowhere, Tapia’s spec-ulative long-range strike took a wicked deflection off Rodrigo Caio and wrong-footed Wever-ton on 59 minutes.

The lead lasted only a few minutes before Richarlison touched a Firmino header from a corner over the line to restore parity.

The winner came seven min-utes from time as Carlos Zam-brano was harshly adjudged to have fouled Neymar.

Worse was still to come for Zambrano as he was sent off minutes later for a stray elbow that caught Richarlison and Neymar drilled home the final nail in Peru’s coffin after Gal-lese spilled a shot from Everton Ribeiro.

Farcical equaliser Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina

earned a second narrow victory in a row following Thursday’s 1-0 win over Ecuador.

Marcelo Moreno Martins had

given hosts Bolivia a deserved lead but Argentina scored a for-tuitous equaliser through Lau-taro Martinez.

Bolivia should have been ahead on six minutes when Argentina goalkeeper Franco Armani was caught off his line but Moreno Martins sent his header from an angle onto the roof of the net.

Mo r e n o M a r t i n s m a d e amends on 24 minutes as he rose between Argentina’s center-backs to power home a header from eight yards after Alejandro Chumacero was al-lowed to run from halfway into the visitors’ box before crossing from the left.

Argentina’s equaliser came in comical fashion as Jose Car-rasco tried to clear the ball out of his six yard box after cut-ting out Martinez’s cross, but he shanked the ball off the for-ward’s shin and past goalkeeper Carlos Lampe.

Lionel Messi, who had an oth-erwise quiet game, and Martin-ez then combined to tee up Cor-rea to thrash home the winner.

Ecuador work of art Ecuador totally dominated

Uruguay in a 4-2 victory in Qui-to.

They took the lead on 15 min-utes as Moises Caicedo flicked home a header from an Angel Mena cross.

Both sides had a goal ruled out following a VAR review be-fore Michael Estrada doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time, rifling home from in-side the box after a mistake by veteran Uruguay center-back Diego Godin.

Uruguay were denied again by VAR before Ecuador went straight up the other end where Estrada cracked home Valen-cia’s backheel from 20 yards.

Ecuador’s final goal was a work of art as Alan Franco’s re-verse pass bemused Uruguay’s defence and Gonzalo Plata rolled his foot over the ball to commit both sliding defender Ronald Araujo and goalkeeper Martin Campana before strok-ing the ball into the far corner.

Luis Suarez scored his re-cord-extending 61st and 62nd goals for Uruguay with a pair of late penalties that were no more than a consolation.

Radamel Falcao scored an in-jury time equaliser as Colombia salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw in Chile. Jefferson Lerma gave Colombia an early lead but Chile turned the match in Quito around by half-time with strikes from Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez.

• Gnabry’s back-heel flick rescues point for Germany in 3-3 draw

AAP | Kyiv

Spain and Germany both had setbacks in the Nations

League on Tuesday. The Spaniards lost to the

Ukraine for the first time while the Germans were held to a draw by Switzerland, who are bottom of League A Group 4.

Spain retained the group lead despite a 1-0 defeat in Kiev in a match attended by about 15,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium.

Germany went two goals down in the first 26 minutes but salvaged a 3-3 draw with the Swiss in a game played in Cologne with no fans due to ris-ing coronavirus infections in the area.

Spain have seven points from

four matches, one point more than Germany and Ukraine, fol-lowed by Switzerland with two points.

In the final round in Novem-ber, Spain visit Switzerland and then host Germany while Ukraine are on the road to face Joachim Loew’s men before they wrap up their group cam-paign against the Swiss.

Viktor Tsygankov scored shortly after coming off the

bench in the second half to nab Ukraine’s first goal in 17 years against La Roja.

The substitute took David de Gea by surprise when he fired a shot from outside the area into the net to complete a counter attack in the 76th minute.

“I don’t even need to say an-ything because my players have said everything with their atti-tude and commitment,” Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko told

reporters.Young guns Ansu Fati and Ad-

ama Traore - touted as the future of Spain’s national team - started together for the first time but couldn’t help find an equaliser.

“I’ve lost many games like this in my career, when you are playing better but the opponent grows in confidence then scores on the counter attack,” Spain coach Luis Enrique.

“But overall I liked what I saw from my players.”

Ukraine goalkeeper Georgiy Bushchan made several key saves to keep Spain scoreless for the first time in a Nations

League match.Germany fought back to draw

with Switzerland after another error-strewn performance.

Mario Gavranovic and Remo Freuler gave the Swiss a buffer before Timo Werner replied in the 29th and Kai Havertz equal-ised in the 55th.

Gavranovic’s second restored Switzerland’s advantage but a brilliant Serge Gnabry’s back-heel flick on the hour gave the hosts a point.

“It was extremely intense. We started badly but showed great attitude in coming back. That was positive,” Germany coach Joachim Loew said.

The game marked midfielder Toni Kroos’ 100th international for Germany.

Elsewhere, C1 leaders Mon-tenegro lost 2-1 to Luxembourg while Cyprus picked up their first point with a goalless draw against Azerbaijan.

The Faroe Islands beat Andor-ra 2-0 to move five points clear of Malta, who accounted for Lat-via 1-0, at the head of D1 while Liechtenstein and San Marino drew 0-0 in D2.

Arsenal ambition convinced Partey to join clubAFP | London

New Arsenal signing Thomas Partey has re-

vealed seeing the club hold on to captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang proved to him that they are serious about matching his ambitions.

Partey was a long-term target for Arsenal, who fi-nally landed the Ghana in-ternational from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day as they paid his release clause, reported to be £45 million ($58 million).

Arsenal also added Brazil international Willian on a free transfer from Chelsea and signed defender Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille.

But tying Aubameyang down to a new three-year deal was seen as the best piece of business by the club, especially given the lack of Champions League football since the 31-year-old arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2018.

Dhoni slammed for ‘bullying’ umpire into changing mindAFP | Dubai

Cricket fans have slammed icon Mahendra Singh Dho-

ni for apparently bullying um-pire Paul Reiffel into changing a wide call during an Indian Premier League game.

The incident occurred Tues-day when Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings paceman Shardul Thakur bowled outside the off stump of Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Rashid Khan.

Umpire Reiffel, who played 35 Tests for Australia before retiring, appeared to start the signal for a wide -- both arms outstretched at shoulder height -- when Dhoni began protest-ing.

Reiffel then seemed to change his mind midway through the signal and the ball went down as legitimate in the crucial pe-nultimate over of Hyderabad’s unsuccessful chase of 168.

Commentator Ian Bishop, a former West Indian interna-tional, said on ESPNcricinfo that Reiffel had erred.

“He started calling it a wide, he looked up, saw Dhoni and he changed his mind,” Bishop said.

“I am someone who is sym-pathetic to the umpires because it is a difficult job, but tonight I will say that Reiffel made a mistake.”

Hyderabad captain David Warner also seemed visibly

unhappy from the dugout of the Dubai stadium in the United Arab Emirates.

The match saw Chennai bounce back from two losses to

win by 20 runs and draw level with Hyderabad on six points in the eight-team table.

But Dhoni’s action did not go down well on social media.

“Such a mockery of game, pathetic! Dhoni keeps bullying umpires and gets away with it. I have just lost count of it,” one cricket fan wrote on Twitter.

Others criticised Reiffel for apparently succumbing to pres-sure from Dhoni.

“Weak umpiring! Sad to see an Elite umpire bogging down by the stature of a cricketer,” said another Twitter user.

Last year Dhoni was fined 50 percent of his match fee after he stormed onto the field during a tense IPL game to contest an umpiring call.

Delhi beats Rajasthan by 13 runs in IPLAP | Dubai

Delhi Capitals used the pace of Anrich Nortje and Kagi-

so Rabada to earn a 13-run vic-tory over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.

Nortje (2-33) claimed the key wickets of Robin Uthappa (32) and Jos Buttler (22) and togeth-er with Rabada (1-28) tied down hard-hitting Rahul Tewatia in the end to restrict Rajasthan to 148-8.

Delhi had earlier scored 161-7 on the back of Shikhar Dhawan’s second successive half century as the left-handed opener scored 57 and captain Shreyas Iyer added 53.

“On a slow wicket it is dif-ficult to make up runs in the end,” Rajasthan skipper Steve Smith said. “Guys kept getting in and kept getting out, and not making 60-odd (runs) to see us through.”

In a game dominated by pace bowlers, Jofra Archer had ear-lier clean bowled Prithvi Shaw off the first ball of the match, to finish with figures of 3-19.

But Delhi showed that they have the capability to defend small totals with the likes of Nortje and Rabada in their bowling armory.

English duo Buttler and Ben Stokes (41) provided a rol-licking start for Rajasthan by smashing 37 runs in the first three overs. But once Buttler was castled by Nortje and Smith (1) offered a tame return catch

to offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Delhi kept striking at regular intervals.

Smith had scored back to back half centuries in the first two games at Sharjah, but since then the Australian has scored just 44 runs in the next six games and has struggled on the slow surfaces of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Stokes, playing in only his second game this season, hit six fours before he was outdone by seamer Tushar Deshpande’s slow delivery and holed out in the deep midway through the Rajasthan run-chase.

Sanju Samson (25) and Uthappa kept Rajasthan in the hunt before Samson was clean bowled by leftarm spinner Axar Patel in the 12th over and Nortje clean bowled Uthappa in the 18th over.

Tewatia, who had earlier played two magnificent knocks in the tournament, couldn’t at-tack against the fiery pace of Nortje and Rabada in the end and remained unbeaten on 14 off 18 balls as Rajasthan lost their fifth game in the tourna-ment.

Delhi now sit on top of the ta-ble with 12 points after winning six of their eight games.

Rajasthan are languishing in seventh place with six points as they have won just one out of their last six games. They started the tournament with back to back wins at Sharjah but since then their top order batsmen have struggled.

“We are not in a great posi-tion, are we? We have got to quickly move on and come back with a big game in three days time,” Smith said.
