Welcome

Welcome to a brief overview of our school. Brighton & Hove High is a warm and lively community in the centre of Brighton. Our girls are bright and independent: they are resilient and not afraid to take risks; they have strong social consciences and enjoy learning.

As you would expect, we have a stimulating academic programme where high standards and excellent progress are of equal importance to us. Teachers are passionate about their subjects, deeply committed to the school and keen to draw the very best from the girls. This, coupled with a wide range of enrichment, sport and extra-curricular activities, really does mean that your daughter will become well-equipped for a changing and challenging world. Supporting and encouraging a girl through the early stages of her life is a responsibility we take very seriously. At BHHS the girls really are very well looked after. It is hard to get lost here.

Much of this good achievement and progress results from the excellent attitudes to learning shown by girls throughout the school. Pupils settle quickly to their studies and apply

Pastoral care

Excellent pastoral care remains a key strength of the school. Pupils thrive in a happy, safe and caring environment which instils in them a feeling of self-worth. The school has created a warm and purposeful atmosphere in which pupils grow up happily and form good friendships. Throughout the school, pupils are articulate, confident, courteous, friendly, supportive of each other, and show compassion to those less fortunate than themselves. Their behaviour in lessons and around the school is exemplary and their punctuality to lessons is commendable. Pupils comment on the positive relationships they have with their teachers.

Science, technology and maths

In Maths I like being able to discuss and learn why some things which we have learnt (i.e. formulae) actually work. In Chemistry we are often pushed to work things out for ourselves and try harder questions.

In Year 7 there are plenty of opportunities I have never had before. I have always enjoyed dance and attended classes out of school, but we didn’t do it at my old school. Here we have dance as part of the curriculum, lots of dance clubs and competitions. I take part in as many of these as I could and really enjoy them.

Sport

The strong sense of community is one of the main reasons I love this school. Being part of the Girls Day School Trust – a group of 26 schools across the UK, has meant that there is an opportunity to interact with other students similar to us. There are yearly events such as Trust Tennis, Netball, Swimming and Dance that allow us to compete against these other schools.

The encouragement to try something, even if you have never done it before means everyone gets the chance to find their passion. Weekly fixtures also mean you get to know people outside of your friendship groups and interact with other girls from other years.

Sport has always been a major part of my life and the exceptional facilities – including our excellent Sports Centre, netball courts and also astroturf have meant I am able to practise to develop my game play.Year 13 pupil

What BHHS has is a combination of teachers who will make sure you fulfil your potential and a support system that you can rely on if it all gets too much.

The one thing that I can definitely confirm is unique to BHHS is the community atmosphere. It is truly unparalleled and I am so glad that I have been here from the age of four! Every day that I come to school I feel like I am coming to my home from home. Every Sixth Former says that they feel comfortable here, not only in the cosy common room or in the games room but they feel comfortable with the teachers and the students. It honestly feels like a family environment.

Pupils contribute in many ways to their school and local communities, as well as those further afield. The school has an excellent tradition of fundraising dating back to the 19th century when the guild for social services was set up. Its existence continues through the Guild.

How to find us

Transport Arrangements

Our position in the heart of the city is incomparable, allowing girls to participate in the life of community as well as being well served by extensive public transport links.

Over two thirds of Senior School students come to school by bus, train or walk. Many Junior School girls walk, scoot or cycle to Radinden Manor Road. There is ample parking close to the Junior School for easy drop off and pick ups. We offer a link bus between the Junior and Senior sites, the minibus is normally available to girls from Year 3 to 13.

Stops are determined by where the majority of pupils live, and in some circumstances it may be possible for girls to be picked up outside their home.

It is possible to book weekly, set days or just one way; we request that these are booked in advance on a half-termly basis.

Places are offered on a first come, first served basis with priority for those living outside Brighton & Hove, those who have used the service in the current year, and to those committing to the full week. We will endeavour to be as flexible as possible to offer any specific days that are requested.

Please see the separate tariff and booking form. Costs range from £1.60 for a local single journey, to £6.50 return for those living further afield.
