FOREWORD

In 1949 the homeopathic principle received a scientific foundation based uponthe experiments and findings of Dr. Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg in his book titledHomotoxicology.

According to homotoxicology, illness is the expression of self-healing. Theafflicted organism attempts to regulate its functions through the body's greaterdefense system by activating detoxification and excretion. Inflammation andfever are not necessarily "bad" signs but rather serve to detoxify and eliminatetoxins. This occurs according to the chemical processes as defined anddemonstrated in homotoxicology. Through this, the physician is provided adifferent perspective of illnesses as many puzzles are clarified and methods oftreatment are re-established. Inflammation need not be suppressed by antibioticsand/or chemotherapy as this often provokes retoxification and therapeuticaldamage that should be avoided. By suppression the illness is propelled towardsdangerous retoxic cellular phases that manifest themselves as chronic and/orlingering diseases. BHI homeopathic remedies stimulate the five systems thatcomprise the great corporal defense system as defined in homotoxicology.

PREFACE

The Heel Story

In the late 1920's, Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg, M.D. (1905-1985), began extensiveexperiments in the field of homeopathy. Between 1936 and 1979, he developedover one thousand combination homeopathic remedies in Germany which havesince been widely dispensed and well received by both homeopathic practitionersand patients.

Dr. Reckeweg founded the homeopathic companies of Heel and Cosmochema-Naturheilmittel as well as Shoynear Cosmetic and Aurelia Publishing in BadenBaden, Germany.

In 1979, Dr. Reckeweg came to the United States where he founded BHI(Biological Homeopathic Industries, Inc.) and started the manufacture ofcombination homeopathic preparations in tablet form. In 1981 he foundedMenaco Publishing Company for the purpose of publishing and distributingbooks on all types of natural healing methods. Dr. Reckeweg was awarded achair as Distinguished Professor of Homeopathy in 1982, at the FranciscoMarroquin University in Guatemala City, Guatemala, for his outstandingadvancements in the field of homeopathy, specifically in homotoxicology,throughout his lifelong career.

In 1997, the company name "BHI" was changed to Heel Inc., a company whichmanufactures and distributes both BHI products and Heel products. As part ofthe worldwide Heel network, Heel Inc. is the world leader in combinationhomeopathic medicine. Every tablet produced by Heel Inc. represents a halfcentury of clinical use and scientific testing.

INTRODUCTION

HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy is a scientific method of medical treatment which stimulates thebody's own healing processes in order to cure illnesses. Homeopathy is basedupon the discovery that a substance can cure symptoms similar to those it cancause.

The word "homeopathy" is derived from the Greek "homoios" meaning similarand "pathos" meaning suffering.

The science of homeopathy was founded by a German physician and chemist,Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, in the early 1800's. Through numerous self-experimentshe furthered the known theory that "likes are cured by likes." Dr. Hahnemannthen determined that the remedies he tested on himself had too severe an effectat the conventional dosage. He found that an appropriately prepared dilutionprovided a faster and safer healing effect. Upon this principle lies the basis ofmodern homeopathic remedies and practice used by physicians and patientsworldwide.

HOMEOPATHIC PRESCRIBING

Homeopathic prescribing is based upon the principles of cure which wereestablished by Samuel Hahnemann, that symptoms of illness may be cured bythe administration of substances which produce, in a healthy person, symptomssimilar to those of the condition being treated. The experienced homeopath willassemble a list of all the patient's symptoms, including those of a physical,psychological and emotional nature. In addition, important factors affecting thecondition, such as aggravation in wet weather or improvement with rest, arealso recorded. All of this information together provides the practitioner with asymptom "picture." This "picture" is unique to the individual and the condition,and will correlate to an appropriate remedy for treatment. In view of theenormous number of homeopathic remedies available, serious study of theMateria Medica is necessary for the practitioner to determine the exact singleremedy that best matches the patient's "picture."

Acute conditions are those in which the illness appears suddenly with welldefined symptoms, such as colds, influenza, or injuries. Most common illnessesare of this nature. They are conditions which are simple and limited in scope.Such illnesses, including those requiring first aid, may be treated quickly andeasily with homeopathic remedies even by the less experienced practitioner.Usually attenuations of 3X to 12X or 30X are used for these treatments.

Chronic conditions, those which have troubled the patient for a long time, areusually more serious in nature and require a slightly different approach. Somechronic conditions may also be referred to as constitutional illnesses, as theyusually affect the person's entire well being and are dependent upon the

individual's constitutional construction or predisposition. Constitutionalprescribing requires a greater level of understanding of the principles ofhomeopathy and an extensive knowledge of the Materia Medica. In most casesthese conditions are treated with homeopathic attenuations of 200X or higher.

There are thousands of homeopathic remedies available today, which may bedivided into two classifications: single remedy preparations and combination orcomplex remedy preparations. Single remedies are attenuations of a singlehomeopathic ingredient. These preparations are available in a wide range ofattenuations and may be used to treat acute or chronic conditions according tothe law of similars.

COMBINATION PREPARATIONS

Combination remedies are mixtures of two or more homeopathic ingredients ofthe same or different attenuations. These combinations are designed byphysicians or pharmacists with extensive knowledge of the Materia Medica.Ingredients are selected for combination based on the purpose of the remedyand therefore may be few or many depending upon the complexity desired.Ingredients which are related in their symptom "pictures" to a particularcondition are assembled to broaden the total "picture" for the combinationremedy. Combined ingredients that mutually support or reinforce each other'seffects provide the practitioner with a simple means of treating common acuteconditions. By combining several ingredients' "pictures" into a single broaderremedy it is not necessary for the practitioner to have an extensive knowledgeof the Materia Medica or to select the exactly matching single remedy.Combination remedies are frequently used to treat acute symptomsaccompanying a chronic condition or to clarify the constitutional condition byremoval of acute symptoms that may make the constitutional "picture" difficultto distinguish.

Not every practitioner will have the expertise or time to discern the exact remedyin every case, nor is it always necessary. The practitioner today is called uponto treat so many patients for such a broad range of conditions, the majority ofwhich are acute and common, that this simply is not practical. The value ofcombination homeopathic remedies lies in their utility for common conditions.

In cases of acute, common complaints a combination remedy may be confidentlyprescribed. This allows for safe and effective treatment of minor illnesses,freeing more of the practitioner's time for working with more serious cases.These combination remedies also provide the less experienced practitionerwith an opportunity to apply homeopathy to a broad range of illnesses whilelearning and studying the Materia Medica for use in the more rigorous prescribingof single remedies.

Homeopathy has a history of safety and effectiveness without side effects.However, some patients may experience an initial worsening of their symptomsfollowed by improvement and relief. This "healing crisis" signals the body'sincreased activity towards healing and usually passes quickly.

DOSAGE FORMS

Tablets

The increasing use and interest in homeopathic remedies recently has causedhomeopathic solid dose forms to increase in popularity over liquids. Homeopathicremedies prepared in solid form are in most cases mixed with milk sugar(lactose) and then formed into tablets. This dosage form is often chosenbecause of its ease of manufacture, storage, and dispensing. Because the dosein the tablet is predetermined and uniform, it is a very consistent form ofmedication.

Tablets should be placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve graduallywithout chewing or tongue movement. The active ingredients of the tablet areabsorbed through the buccal lining of the mouth. This is an extremely importantprocess. This allows the medication to go directly to the point of action,bypassing the stomach, intestines, and liver. This is necessary because gastricjuices and digestive processes can destroy or inactivate remedies.

Generally, tablets are taken sublingually or by dissolving completely in themouth. Adults and Children above 6 years: For mild symptoms take 1 tablet3-4 times daily. One tablet make be taken as often as every 5 minutes asrequired for relief. Infants and children to 6 years: 1/2 the adult dosage.

More than one type of tablet or other homeopathic dosage form may beadministered at one time. This can be accomplished by alternating the remediesaccording to the dosage schedule chosen. Refer to the section on administration.

The best results with solid dosage forms will be achieved when the mouth isempty and clean of food or beverages. The presence of other substances in themouth may decrease absorption and so decrease the effectiveness of theremedy.

Nasal Sprays

The popularity of homeopathic nasal sprays is not surprising, due to theirworldwide acceptance in allopathic medicine. The local application of nasalsprays offers ease of dosage and quick results.

The advantage of safety in homeopathy is notable in the domain of nasal sprays.Unlike certain nasal sprays which are associated with side effects and habituation,

homeopathic nasal sprays work safely and without risk of habituation.

Suppositories

A scientific basis for rectal therapy was established in the second half of the 19thcentury. Suppositories make it possible to introduce a large portion of rectallyadministered medication directly into the blood stream, by-passing the stomach,intestines, and liver. In homeopathic practice, the use of rectal suppositories forthe systemic absorption of medication is very useful. Suppositories may beadministered in conjunction with tablets and other homeopathic preparations,as the different dosage forms are completely compatible. Suppositories andtablets of different formulas may be combined to treat localized acute illnesses.In such treatments, suppositories should be administered 1-2 hours apart. Useof suppositories should not exceed three (3) daily.

The use of suppositories for chronic or preventive measures, such ashemorrhoids, is achieved through the administration of a single suppositorydaily or several times weekly. For these cases suppositories and tablets alsolend themselves to a therapeutic routine, where tablets are administered dailyand one suppository nightly.

Suppositories provide a valuable addition to practice and therapy by broadeningthe routes of administration available to infants, children, adults, and the elderlyalike.

ADMINISTRATION

The symptoms of illness may call for treatment with more than one combinationremedy. These remedies may be of the same or of different dosage forms.When administering more than one tablet formula, allow at least ten minutesbetween tablets to permit complete absorption. The same applies when usingdifferent liquid remedies or when combining both tablet and liquid remedies. Inthe special case of suppositories, twenty minutes should be allowed followingadministration of a suppository before administering a tablet or liquid.
