Fall 2017

Dear Fellow Retirees,

Hopefully, all of you are enjoying the slight “nip” in the air that says Fall is here and Winter is on its way. This time of year also signals the beginning of a very busy season for most of us! There are weekend football games to watch, Thanksgiving turkeys to buy and prepare, and Christmas shopping to begin.

Since the new joint venture and formation of Brookwood Baptist Health, many of you have asked how the Baptist Health Foundation functions in this new environment. At the November meeting, a representative of the Legacy Baptist Health System will provide a brief update for us and answer any questions you may have.

There’s another important reason to be at the November 15th meeting! At the last meeting a slate of officers to lead BHSRO in 2018 through 2019 was presented. The election of these officers and Board members will take place at the November meeting. Please review the details on page11 of this issue.

Nominations from the floor also may be made at the meeting provided the

nominee has been contacted and has agreed to accept a nomination.

Our speaker in November will be Celeste Connor. Her stories will hopefully make you laugh, cry, and laugh again.

Finally, I would like to thank each of you for allowing me to serve as your president for the past two years. It has been an honor and a privilege.

I hope to see every one of you at the November meeting! It’s an event you will not want to miss!

Spiritual Reflections

Many people are drawn to fall colors.Fall colors are warm, vibrant, extraordinarily rich, and energetic. Iwonder how appealing I am as a Christian? Do other people gravitate to me because I am a warm, vibrant, and inviting person?

Here are some thoughts a pastor friend of mine shared with me recently about fall colors:

Red When I think about the color of the fall leaves, red is my favorite. There's just something about the trees that are full of red leaves glistening in the sun. It's just extraordinary. They stick out and you notice them. Red brings up the thought of passion. No matter where we are in our Christian walk, I think we all could do with a little more passion for Christ. We should stick out in a good way. We should reflect all that brilliance of Christ.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Orange The color orange is so beautiful in the fall. We see it in not just the fall leaves, but in those beautiful pumpkins as well. Orange reflects warmth and symbolizes thoughtfulness and sincerity. As Christians that's something we should portray. We should be that warm inviting person that cares about others. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32Yellow

The yellow color of fall makes me happy. Yellow conjures up joy and cheerfulness. I don't really think that if we aren't cheerful as Christians, other people will want what we have. If we have Christ, we should have joy in our hearts and that joy should reflect out through us. It's listed right there in Galatians along with the other fruit of the spirit that we should be bearing.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22,23

Purple Some of the colors we see in fall are the shades of purple. Leaves we find in the purple family are so striking. Purple is the color of royalty. As Christians, we are royalty in Christ. Our behavior should reflect that royalty. We should be striking as Christians.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:16,17

Brown If we didn't have all that brown in the midst of the bright fall colors, I doubt if they'd be so brilliant. Brown represents stability and it anchors all those other beautiful colors of fall. In Christ, we have our anchor. Others can see if we are living for Christ and depending on Him in our lives. It comes out in our actions and behavior.

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6,7 ------What powerful words!! Showing Christ through our behavior is so important in our witness to others . Our "colors" do matter. How we act and behave is what people see when they look at us. I hope I grow to have a beautiful, warm, and inviting life in Christ. I don't want my faith to be hid from the world because of me. I want to portray vibrancy and warmth so that people will want to get to know me and learn about Christ through me.

So I ask this question, what colors are you projecting? David Coram

AATS Graham Foundation and Brookwood Baptist Health Announce James L. Cox Fellowship in Atrial Fibrillation Surgery

Brookwood Baptist Health, together with the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Graham Foundation, has announced that Dr. William McAlexander has been selected as a recipient of the 2017 James L. Cox Fellowship in Atrial Fibrillation Surgery. Dr. McAlexander was chosen out of 334 other surgeons.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to participate in this immersive learning experience with guidance from top experts and leaders in the atrial fibrillation field,” says Dr. McAlexander. “I look forward to an expanded knowledge and exposure to the surgical treatment of Afib that I can bring back to my patients and the Brookwood surroundings communities.”

The fellowship was set up to provide newly graduated cardiothoracic surgeons with a highly engaging educational experience at leading surgical Afib centers across the United States. Eight nationally recognized experts in Afib surgery will act as “host surgeons”, providing one-on-one mentoring and formalized training to award winners over the course of three months. The fellowship will also include a didactic training course led by Dr. James Cox, whose pioneering work established the field of Afib ablation, and his protégé, Dr. Ralph Damiano, who chairs the Afib fellowship program on behalf of the AATS Graham Foundation and AtriCure.

The three month fellowship will provide hands-on educational training to enhance clinical understanding and surgical proficiency in treating patients with atrial fibrillation under the guidance of leading surgeon-educators in this field. The specific learning objectives will be to provide the foundational knowledge of the pathophysiology of Afib, the rationale for surgical treatment and the ability to perform the Afib correction

William McAlexander, M.D., Thoracic Surgery Specialist at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, awarded the 2017 James L. Cox Fellowship in Atrial Fibrillation Surgery

procedure over a range of surgical approaches. As a result of this training and the unique mentorship opportunity afforded to these fellows, they may ascend to leadership roles in surgical Afib treatment over the course of their careers.

ABOUT DR. McALEXANDER Dr. William W McAlexander is a Thoracic Surgery Specialist in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated with honors from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1998. Having more than 19 years of diverse experiences, especially in Thoracic Surgery, Dr. William W McAlexander affiliates with Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, and cooperates with other doctors and specialists in many medical groups including Surgical Associates Of Jonesboro, Inc., Baptist Health Center - Princeton Cardiothoracic Surgery.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIPThe fellowship is named after Dr. James L. Cox, a leading pioneer in the development of solutions to treat Afib. Dr. Cox has been working on educating surgeons globally for decades to reduce the global epidemic of Afib. He received his MD from the University of Tennessee, and after serving with the US Army medical corps, he completed his residency at Duke University, where he joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1998. He then moved to the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he became Professor and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, specializing in surgical procedures for cardiac arrhythmias. In 1987, he performed his first “maze” procedure, which was recognized as the first cure for severe forms of Afib. From 1990 to 1997, he was the Evarts A. Graham Professor of Surgery at Washington University and in 1997 moved to Georgetown University to become Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, a position from which he retired in 2000. Brookwood Baptist Medical Center Launches Innovative In-House 24/7 Obstetrics Program

Brookwood Baptist Medical Center is partnering with OB Hospitalist Group (OBHG) to offer an OB Emergency Department and OB hospitalist program, where expectant mothers are ensured to be evaluated and treated by a physician regardless of time, location, complication or circumstance. These physicians are on site 24-7 at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in order to support community OB/GYNs and provide coverage as requested by them. This service benefits physicians dividing their time between office and hospital, and also ensures that pregnant and laboring women have access to an experienced obstetrician at all times.

The program underscores Brookwood Baptist Medical Center’s commitment to quality in their maternal care program.”
