GENERAL SECRETARY

BEING FULLY ALIVE

Dan Miller

Here's an example of how people are sitting ontop of new kinds of opportunities without seeing them.On a recent radio interview we had a lady caller whohad been teaching at a school. She loved being able tomotivate and inspire the students- and the philosophy ofthe school aligned with her personal values. But she wasbeing paid a meagre salary and felt the financial strain athome. So she quit that job and took a position as directorof a day care facility. She doubled her salary - but wasconfronted with business values that conflicted with herown. She found non-supportive, critical parents andgeneral tension in much of what she tried to do.

Her question for me: "Should I work in a schoolwhere it embraces my faith and values- but I don't makeany money- or should I keep the job that pays doublethe money but conflicts with my values?"

What do you think - is this lady fully alive? Andwhat is the problem with her question?

Here's a short illustrative story:

There May Be More Solutions Than What You First See

Many years ago in an Indian village, a farmerhad the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to thevillage moneylender. The old and ugly moneylenderfancied the farmer's beautiful daughter, so he proposed abargain. He would forgive the farmer's debt if he couldmarry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter werehorrified by the proposal, but the cunning moneylendersuggested that they let providence decide the matter. Hetold them that he would put a black pebble and a whitepebble into an empty money-bag. The girl would have toreach in and pick one pebble from the bag. If she pickedthe black pebble, she would become his wife and herfather's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the whitepebble, she need not marry him and her father's debtwould still be forgiven. If she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail until the debt waspaid. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in thefarmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent overto pick up two pebbles. The sharp-eyed girl noticed thathe had picked up two black pebbles and put them intothe bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble. Now,imagine that you were the girl standing in the field. Whatwould you have done? If you had to advise her, what

Page 6: BHUBHANESHAW R CIRCLE CELEBRATES - …sbioabhubaneswar.org/doc/magaug.pdf · AISBOF graced the meeting as Chief Guest and Chief ... Lighting of the Lamp by the honourable ... Minister's

6

would you have told her?

Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:

(1) The girl could refuse to take a pebble-but her fatherwould then be thrown in jail.

(2) The girl could pick a black pebble and sacrificeherself in order to save her father from debt andimprisonment. Or

(3) The girl could pull out both black pebbles in thebag, expose the moneylender as a cheat, and likelyincite his immediate revenge.

Take a moment to think through this story. I'veused it with the hope that it will help you see alternatesolutions beyond the obvious ones. The girl's dilemmacannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. You maybe in a similar situation. You may be in a job you hate-butthe pay is great. You have two choices:

(1) You can stay in a job you hate.

(2) You can leave the job but will then give up the greatpay.

Are these really all the options?

Here is what the girl did. She put her hand intothe money bag and drew out a pebble. Without lookingat it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble strewnpath, where it immediately became lost among all the otherpebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But nevermind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, youwill be able to tell which pebble I picked." Since theremaining pebble was black, it would have to be assumedthat she had picked the white one. And since themoneylender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girlwould have changed what seemed an impossible situationinto an extremely advantageous one. Now, how couldyou see more creative solutions for your situation?

Now let's go back to that teacher - rememberthe one who wondered if she should be in the school thataligned with her values but didn't pay much - or in onethat paid double but conflicted with much of what shebelieved. Did she perhaps have options she was notseeing?

Here's a related example : Several years agoJim was eager for a change. He had an academicbackground but was just exiting a career in the military.Over a casual dinner conversation his wife asked Jim, "If

money were not important, what would you do?" Jimresponded immediately, "I'd sit around the house and readold history books." Guess what Jim does today. He readsold history books. He creates audio CDs as he brings tolife old historical novels with his dramatic, engagingreadings. With primarily a home schooling customer base, children beg to hear the next instalment as they aresimultaneously learning the rich stories from history.Recently I received this note from Jim - "Just thoughtyou'd like to know that, doing what I love, my profitsincreased this year to over 104K. A great year for methat was a lot of fun and a lot of work. All with a sevensecond commute."

If you created ten alternatives for moving forwardrather than just two, what are the chances you coulduncover an application that allows you to engage yourpassion - and make more money than you ever imagined ?

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Jim RohnEconomic disaster begins with a philosophy of doing lessand wanting more.

If you want to amend your errors, you must begin byamending your philosophy.

The only thing worse than not reading a book in the lastninety days is not reading a book in the last ninety daysand thinking that it doesn't matter.

Your personal philosophy is the greatest determining fac-tor in how your life works out.

Initial response illustrates a great deal about someone'spersonal philosophy.

Only human beings can reorder their lives any day theychoose by refining their philosophy.

The key factor that will determine your financial future isnot the economy; the key factor is your philosophy.

Don't borrow someone else's plan. Develop your ownphilosophy and it will lead you to unique places.

If you learn to set a good sail, the wind that blows willalways take you to the dreams you want, the income youwant, and the treasures of mind, purse, and soul you want.

Your philosophy determines whether you will go for thedisciplines or continue the errors.

Philosophy is the sum total of all that you know and whatyou decide is valuable.

SEVEN MAXIMS FOR CREATINGTHE IDEAL LIFE!

Gary Ryan Blair

It all begins with a vision... a vision of creating anideal life.

The relentless pursuit of that vision will eventuallygive birth to the picture in your mind. An ideal life bornfrom the unwavering dedication to doing whatever it tookto become successful. Creating the ideal life obviouslyrequires intelligence, but that's just the start. What's mostimportant is having a positive set of values, attitudes andhabits necessary for your vision to become reality.

The following are Seven Maxims for Creating TheIdeal Life:

1. Create a Bigger Future!

Make your future bigger, brighter, and bolder thanyour past. Your past is history, however your past offersgreat insights for creating the ideal life. Your past is richwith experiences that are worth thinking about in newways, and these valuable experiences can become rawmaterial for creating a masterpiece.

Approach your past with this attitude, and you willhave an insatiable desire for even better, more enjoyableexperiences. Use your past to help you create the idealfuture, and you will separate yourself from situations, relationships, and activities that can trap you in the past.

Continually use your past only as a foundation forwhat lies ahead, and you will move closer to your personalnorth star.

2. Create Contributions Into Other People's Lives!

The ideal life must include a commitment to servingothers. Create a habit whereby your contributions arebigger than your personal gain. As you become moresuccessful, numerous rewards will come your way:increased income, praise, recognition, reputation, capabilities, status, resources, and opportunities.

As nice and as enjoyable as these rewards can be,they can also become an Achilles heel. Be careful as tobecoming too fixated on just the rewards, rather than onmaking still greater contributions.

To create the ideal life, concentrate continuously onmaking ever greater contributions into the lives of your

family, friends, associates, community and the world atlarge. Look for ways to empower the human spirit, helpothers eliminate limiting steps, demonstrate honour, discipline and good character, and look for opportunitiesto teach and share what you have learned with others.

3. Create a Learning Environment!

The creation of an ideal life is dependent upon yourcommitment to growth, learning and implementation. Youmay have a great deal of experience and sit at the front ofthe class intellectually, but still be no smarter for all of thethings you've done, seen, and heard.

Experience alone is no guarantee of intellectualgrowth. To create the ideal life that you envision, youmust continually transform your experiences into newlessons, and you will make each day of your life a sourceof growth, maturity and beauty.

Every experience in life offers an opportunity forlearning. The smartest people are those who can transformthe smallest event or situation into breakthroughs inthinking and action.

4. Create Higher Standards!

Raise the bar high, higher than you think possible, astound yourself by your performance. To ensure thatyou have more in life, you must first commit to being more.

Be more committed, focused, disciplined, andrelentless. Be the authentic person you are and were meantto be. Be more, do more, demand and expect more fromyourself and those around you, and you will be creatingthe ideal life.

No matter how much acclaim you receive, keepworking to improve. The opportunity for growth is unlimited.

Continually work to surpass everything you've doneso far, by continually raising your standards.

5. Create a Greater Appreciation for Life!

Gratitude is essential to creating the ideal life. Overthe long run, the few who are continually successful havethis in common, they recognize that success springsnaturally from the assistance of many other people -- andthey are continually grateful for this support.

Short-term successes cut themselves off fromeveryone who has helped them. They see themselves asthe sole cause of their own achievements. As they become

Page 8: BHUBHANESHAW R CIRCLE CELEBRATES - …sbioabhubaneswar.org/doc/magaug.pdf · AISBOF graced the meeting as Chief Guest and Chief ... Lighting of the Lamp by the honourable ... Minister's

8

more self-cantered and isolated, they lose their creativityand ability to succeed.

Continually acknowledge others' contributions, andyou will automatically create greater success and a greaterquality of life. You'll continually be motivated to achieveeven more for those who have helped you. Focus onappreciating and thanking others, and the conditions willalways grow for your increased success.

6. Create Enjoyments and Playfulness!

A greater sense of enjoyment and playful spirit willautomatically create a greater quality of life. Distressingemotions and humour cannot occupy the samepsychological space. A sense of humour helps you to findthe lighter side of deadlines and conflicts. It's a tool forletting go of frustrations and upsets of the moment. Agrowing conviction that stress levels are running highmakes a sense of humour a mandatory condition for thecreation of the ideal life.

Fun is the fabric of happy memories, the icing onthe cake of life. A life filled with mirth is one well lived;approach everything you do with this sense of enjoymentand playfulness.

7. Create Discomfort!

Of all the maxims advocated, none is of morefundamental value than your willingness and ability tocreate discomfort. In a very real sense, it is a preconditionto all the others.

Always make your goals and dreams greater thanyour comfort. Recognize that every act of creation, isalso a simultaneous act of destruction. The more positive, intentional, and comfort challenging the better.

Many successful people start off with big, bold, breathtaking dreams and ambitions. They take risks, andsome on occasions have bet the farm in the process, butthe moment they become successful, they start seekinggreater security and comfort as their main goal. They beginto play not to lose, rather than playing to win!

They fall asleep at the wheel motivationally, andquickly lose the confidence that made them so successful.Security and comfort are desirable by-products of goalachievement, but when they become the goal itself, theyquickly work against you.

Treat any increase of comfort in your life as only atemporary stage for establishing bigger goals. Continuallystrive for higher goals and achievement, continually placeyourself in a position where you have to grow, learn andperform and life will always be an adventure.

The relentless pursuit of the ideal life must continuethroughout your life as you pursue the goal of just notmeeting, but exceeding even your wildest expectations.

Incorporate these maxims into your life, and sharethem with others so that you and they might be able toenjoy all that life has to offer.

Everything Counts!

HOW TO BE HAPPY ANYTIME

Barbara J. Stepp

Very often, clients tell me, 'I just want to be happy.'

When I ask them what happiness means to them, they say, 'I don't know.' Of course, I help them to realizewhat happiness means to them, what it takes and howthey will know when they are happy.

Happy is defined in the dictionary as delighted, pleased or glad. Everything we do is for that ultimatefeeling. Happy is a really big word that is subjective foreach of us. So what does happy mean to you?

Some people spend a lot of time atavistically; that isthinking about the past and what went wrong with regret, etc.

It is our language, both internal (our thoughts) andexternal (spoken) that creates our reality. Language isthe mirror of the mind. Simply put, yucky words createyucky feelings; happy words create happy feelings.

Dr. Richard Bandler says, 'If you always focus onnegative things, you feel bad. If you start to look forsolutions that are different and better, that's the way yourworld will become. This is not 'positive thinking'. It isBrain Science.

My life/professional partner, Dr. Dave Dobson, oftensaid, 'The most important thing in life is awareness.' Sobecome friendlier with your hard drive (brain) and noticewhen you are using yucky words. Many people are notaware of them, feel the yuck and wonder why theyexperience the unpleasant feelings. It is your brain andyou are in charge.

Page 9: BHUBHANESHAW R CIRCLE CELEBRATES - …sbioabhubaneswar.org/doc/magaug.pdf · AISBOF graced the meeting as Chief Guest and Chief ... Lighting of the Lamp by the honourable ... Minister's

9

You can interrupt the yucky pattern by saying, 'cancelthat.' Or 'Stop!' Your thoughts will stop briefly, proofthat your brain does listen to you. Then take a deepbreath, exhale slowly, say what you would like to sayinstead. Or ask a great question like, 'how can I feel betternow?' Or, 'what's the best thing for me to do right now?'Or, 'how can I be happier?' This is a menu you arewelcome to use and you can choose questions of yourown. It's amazing how your unconscious or Other thanConscious mind gives you the answers on how you canbe happier. Pay attention.

Some people see yucky pictures. Experiment with this.Be as aware of your internal images as you are of yourlanguage. Push the image off into the distance. You willdiscover that the further away it is the less intense the feelingis. Make it smaller, dim, and defocused. Some of my clientsblow it up or shatter it into little pieces. Now make the pictureof what you want brighter, bigger, closer, add colour. Playwith this and find what works best for you.

You can make a 'happy list' from tiny things to reallybig ones, and keep adding to it. Start listing what youenjoy. Some items on my personal list are the colour red, sunrises, water, piloting a plane, scuba diving, butterflies, smiles and happy faces, reading, helping people, cotton, silk, morning coffee, etc. How about dinner with friends, doing a good job at work, travel.

It works and will make a delightful difference.Imagine you just stepped into the field of infinitepossibilities and make the longest list you can. My friend,Tony Robbins once told me I had the longest happy listhe had seen. I continue to add to the list I started in 1980.

When you have a happy experience, remember agreat memory, or feel delightfully wonderful (we all do),memorize it and touch your thumb and forefinger together. It becomes an anchor that you can replicate at will andfeel good in an instant. You can stack the good feelingsas a resource.

Before you sleep, tell your unconscious or Otherthan Conscious mind that you want to be happier in yourown words and set goals for yourself. Then drift off tosleep while your Other than Conscious mind, who is onthe job 24/7, assists you in this. Don't be surprised if youdiscover more ways to feel happy or you start feelinghappier for no particular reason.

When we are happy, we can make better decisions, create our hopes and dreams and make them real. Weall deserve it!

GIVING IS RECEIVINGDan Wilson

"It is more blessed to give than to receive."

For most of my life I thought this quote was intendedto guilt us into being a "giver" and that there was somethingbad or self-cantered about being a "getter." But that'snot the point of it at all. It is not intended to be some sortof do-it-or-else command; rather it is offered as sageadvice, the kind that we might expect from a wise elder.Since we all come into this world as infants who arecapable only of getting, giving is a behaviour we mustlearn. But once we learn it- I mean truly learn to be aselfless giver- something amazing happens in that our livesbecome enormously enriched. It is one of the greatparadoxes of life.

In recent years I have been on several trips intoCentral America to help the poor who live there. Myfirst time to do this was probably motivated by that guiltyfeeling I just described and because I knew I had morethan enough and needed to give some away. Admittedly,my trip began with a bit of an Ugly American attitude, that I had much to give and the impoverished peoplewould be grateful for my generosity. What occurred, though, was the reverse. I quickly discovered that whatI had to give them paled in comparison to what they hadto give me. I learned much more about generosity, friendship, sharing, and love from them than they couldever have gained from me.

The same experience holds true in my coachingbusiness. I am oftentimes hired to coach leadership teamsand small work groups, and what I have discovered indoing so is that I learn much more from them than theyever gain from my expertise as a coach.

"My own experience about all the blessings in my life,"claims renowned author, speaker and consultant KenBlanchard, "is that the more I give away, the more that comesback. That is the way life works. . . ." Simply put, "It ismore blessed to give than to receive," because when wegive we almost always- and usually to our great surprise-receive much more than whatever it is we give away.
