  • The Book of Hebrews Hall of Faith

Hebrews 11 tells us of many men and women of faith. Two of the men, whose acts of faith were not specifically described in this passage, are Gideon and Barak (see verse 32). Read about them: Gideon, in Judges 6-8, and Barak, in Judges 4. Compare and contrast these two men and complete the Venn diagram to show your findings. In each mans unique circle, write down the ways in which they are different. Things that they have in common should be written in the overlapping center of the two circles. One example has been done for you.

Things to think about: During what time period did each man live? What kind of character did he have? What were his acts of faithfulnessor disobedienceto the Lord? Did these men act alone, or did they work with others? How did God deliver the Israelites in each situation?

  • Daniel: A Man of Faith

Daniel is just one example of a man of faith in the Old Testament. Even as a young Israelite, taken into slavery in Babylon, he refused to corrupt himself with royal food and wine and set himself apart to serve God. Daniel was shown much favor and was also gifted by God in the understanding of dreams and visions. Eventually, he was given a high position in Darius kingdom but evil men began to plot against him. Read of how these men tried to discredit Daniel, and how God rewarded his faithfulness, in Daniel chapter six. Then, fill in the details about the story elements and answer the questions below.

  • Faithfulness Work with suffixes

The word faithfulness comes from the root word (or base) of faith plus two suffixes (word endings): -ful and -ness. shameful __________________________ cupful ____________________________ wakeful ___________________________

    harmful ___________________________ beautiful __________________________ spoonful __________________________

Make words with the root words and suffixes below. Write the meaning of each. (You may need to look up the meanings of the root words or the suffixes in a dictionary.) For the last two, make up your own.

    1. king + dom = ______________ Definition: _________________________________

    2. train + er = ________________ Definition: _________________________________

    3. class + ify = ________________ Definition: _________________________________ 4. music + ical = ______________ Definition: _________________________________

-Ful is a suffix meaning full of or characterized by; tending to or able to; or as much as will fill.

Write which definition of ful is best used in the words below.

-Ness is a suffix attached to adjectives and participles, which then forms a noun denoting

quality or state of being. (For example, preparedness is a state of being prepared; darkness reflects the quality of dark.)

  • The Meaning of Love

First Corinthians 13 offers a description of love. It tells us how we should express Christs love to others. Read part of the passage below, and then use your dictionary to write the best definition for each of the selected words.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

    1. Envy: ________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    2. Rude: ________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    3. Truth: _______________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    4. Trust: ________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    5. Persevere: ____________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

    ________________________________________________________________________

Now, re-read the passage. Put a circle around each noun. Put a square around each

    verb. Underline each adjective.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is

not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily

angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil

but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always

    hopes, always perseveres.

  • Love Acrostic An acrostic (Greek: kros "top"; stchos "verse") is a poem or other form of writing in which the first letter, syllable or word of each line, paragraph or other recurring feature in the text spells out a word or a message. As a form of constrained writing, an acrostic can be used as a mnemonic device to aid memory retrieval. A famous acrostic was made in Greek for the acclamation JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S SON, SAVIOUR (Greek: , , ; Iesous CHristos, THeou Yios, Soter ch and th being each one letter in Greek). The initials spell ICHTHYS (), Greek for fish hence the frequent use of the fish as a symbol for Jesus Christ from the early days of Christianity to the present time.1

If you can, find a book of acrostic poems at your local library to provide you with more examples of this type of writing. If you have access to the Internet, the Web site referenced in the foot note below will also give you additional information and acrostic samples. Now, write your own acrostic poem using the letters of the word LOVE:

  • As Christians, we are supposed to surrender our lives to Jesus as Lord, to follow His example and His teachings. One of the best places to find the teachings of Jesus is Matthew 5-7, in what is known as the Sermon on the Mount. After sharing what it means to follow Him, Jesus said, Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock (Matthew 7:24). He wants us not only to hear His words, but obey them! That takes a heart of surrenderbecause Jesus ways are not always easy. Read the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11). Write about how obeying Jesus words will affect your behavior towards others or your heart towards God. How can you apply the Beatitudes to your life? _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
