  • Preface

I do not like computers. It took almost twenty years after electric typewriters cameout that I finally bought one of those innovationscarefully keeping the old manualstashed away for when it did not work. I was going on a decade at a typesetting establish-ment utilizing the then-new wonders of computer technology before I broke down andgot my first computer.

They said they were user friendly. They lied.Yet their virtues I came to grudgingly admit. I have published two lengthy studies

on the background of the seven churches of Asia, providing an in-depth study of theeconomies, histories, politics, religion, and culture of the cities they were located within.(See my The Seven Cities of the Apocalypse & Roman Culture and The Seven Cities of theApocalypse & Greco-Asian Culture.) Some 700 works were required in this massive under-taking. I had never previously attempted such an in-depth and complicated study. In manycases, it was a matter of hundreds of tiny fragments that had to be pieced together into amosaic. A little item here and a little fact there. Only thanks to the wonders of comput-ers could such be done expeditiously and it became the labor of years instead of decades.

Computers provided the crucial ability to insert new data as I uncovered it and tomerge together information from a variety of topics without requiring the countless hoursof retyping labor that would otherwise have been required. Grudgingly and unwillingly I came to admit that this confounded new invention might actually have some meritafter all!

My first experiment utilizing internet research, however, came several years later and was published in 2000. This dealt with the interaction of politics and Bible transla-tion in sixteenth century England. Entitled Church, Monarch and Bible, in the introduc-tion I make scathing mention of how inadequate the resources turned out to be. Thatresearch was conducted two years previously and the situation has now improved dramat-icallyat least so far as the areas covered by the current work. Slowly but surely in thisand many other areas the wilderness is being hacked away and a civilization erected. AndI will have to eat some of my own words: I would never have imagined this much progress, this quickly.

As you can see from these remarks I am not one who sits down at a computer andlooks forward to hours of gentle wandering over the boisterous seas of the internet. I wantto get to what I need, use it, and go on to something else. The internet is a tool not an end.An instrument, not an idol of worship.

I want to use it the way I do a library, where I can quickly determine whether thematerials I need are available. Millions of those who use the internet are in that category.

    1

  • They want to speedily and expeditiously accomplish their goals rather than imitate theancient Israelites in their forty years of wandering before they reached the Promised Land.

This book is designed for such people. Average users, not experts. Individuals whohave a good idea of what they want but dont want to waste needless hours of time find-ing it. Thats what this book does, providing an array of materials related to the text ofBible translations and Bible interpretation. For good measure we have included suchnonBiblical resources as ancient writings and church writers of the first centuries afterChrist and added in a smattering of archaeological and other data to complete the mix.

A surprising number are directly downloadable into your hard drive for continued, immediate use. Others are simply designed for your on-line use but needed portions canbe cut and pasted into your text files as you need them.

We are interested in book length materials or significant segments of written analy-sis or raw data from which one can make ones own conclusions. This is certainly not anabsolute; digressions certainly exist. But these are side plates for the intellectual plate. Our interest is on the main course: the servings of information for which one would nor-mally have to resort to printed books to obtain and which many libraries simply do nothave.

Although a number of contemporary foreign language Bibles are listed, our mainemphasis is on English language resources, both past and present.

Many of these resources are for the beginning student. Others are for the advancedstudent of the original languageshence Greek and Hebrew texts are included. This con-cise guide is designed to take the headache out of finding these sourcestaking you rightto it rather than you having to search around. Because web sites have been known to van-ish into the dark of the night, multi-sources have been provided where possible for themajority of the resources.

    2 Preface

  • A Few Technical Matters

There is no way that absolute consistency is possible in compiling a volume such asthis. If a work is described in one form in an internet search engine and in a different format the web site, which do you use? Or if some differentiate between author and the authorsbook while others run it all together as if it is part of the title? I have usually followed theformat found at the site itself.

In some cases technical accuracy is sacrificed for understandability: It is not truly Wes-leys New Testament; properly, it is the New Testament, as translated by John Wesley. Asverbal short hand, everyone understands either form.

Two different forms of documentation are utilized, based upon what seems mostexpedient in a given context. In some areas the titles are given alphabetically; in othercases, the authors names and titles are intermingled alphabeticallywhatever best seemsto fit the context.

The names of authors are not fully consistent: Sometimes a writer may label himselfRobert as the author of some of his writings. Later he may shift to Bob. I haveattempted to maintain the identifications as they are now. On the other hand, such minor shifts are easily missed in the review of the original previous version of this mate-rial so there may be some inadvertent inconsistency. Likewise the title of given materialhas sometimes shifted. I have attempted to update these as well as the authors names whereneeded.

Even the nomenclature used to describe individual Bible translations vary in theircompleteness. As a general rule, I use the description given in the source itself. True, acertain Bible translation may have appeared, say, in 1910, but are the other translationslisted under the same name from that edition or a revision? The simplest course was tousually leave the material the way the source presented it.

The same is true in regard to identification of Greek Testaments. The Majority Textis used by some as essentially equivalent to the Textus Receptusproperly, however, theTextus Receptus was the generally received majority text based on the few handfuls ofmanuscripts available to the compiler in the sixteenth century. Today the available man-uscripts are many times more numerous and a true majority text is based upon thoseresources. The easiest and most appropriate course was to list resources according to what-ever nomenclature was used by the individual providing the resource.

A large number of concise comments are added in parentheses for specific works: Ifyou are a Roman Catholic (abbreviated RC) you might want to put such authors at thevery beginning of your research; if your views of a certain topic are of a certain type (Sev-enth-day Adventists or one who adopts the preterist interpretation of prophecy, to giveonly two examples) then you might well find those resources your logical beginning point

    3

  • for studying a specific topic. The purpose is not to discourage the use of any author, butto provide the reader with assistance in determining where to begin.

Finally, I in no way endorse or approve of all the materials the reader will find. Someare laudable. Others will be useful for different levels of experience in Biblical study. SomeI myself would probably briefly scan and move on elsewhere. As I told my daughters var-ious times as they grew up, The good Lord gave us a brain and He wants us to use it.This is especially true with the internet where a vast variety of materials exist, from theextremely speculative and fanciful to the most soundly thought out. Nearly all mean well, but that doesnt mean they are all equally right or useful.

    4 A Few Technical Matters

  • How to Use This Book

In order to maximize the space available for new resources in this second edition, wehave adopted a new and more concise method of listing major resources: In cases wherethere are ten or more resources listed on a single web page we have assigned it an M (forMajor Resource) number and a three digit code. (Occasionally we have used this for alesser but still significant number of works.) This approach is used to identify the resourcein the main text while any needed instructions for use of the site are typically listed in theappendix where the full list of http locations for the major resources are listed.

If a specific web site meets this criteria on two or more of its primary pages, eachweb page is given its own M number so that the user can access the desired material bygoing through a minimum number of steps. Sometimes a web site will have loose endsof a few references of one type or another or which, due to the particular way the webpages are organized, may be potentially confusing unless one is given the specific detailedhttp site where the needed material is found. In such cases we have provided the full datain the main text to facilitate ease of use by the reader.

A number of contractions are used in this book to conserve space: OL (for online)and DL (for downloadable) being the most obvious. A number of DL resources requirethe use of a specific underlying processing system that can be added to your computer:see the list of those contractions in the appendix of abbreviations and major source codes.

    English Bible Translations

    Introductory Notes

    Simultaneous Multiple Translation Comparisons Online

At the following you can select any individual Bible chapter and verse and view a large num-ber of translations simultaneously OL:

    * (19 English translations, 6 foreign language versions, 6 Greek texts, 1 Hebrew. Click on displaymultiple versions; using control key select those desired): http://www.olivetree12.com/bible/

    * (mirror site of above with identical materials): http://www.inthebeginning.net/bible/* http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/ (can look up in 5 translations simultaneously; has link to

separate page if desire to use only 1 version. Can also click on Available Versions on left handside and access the translations through a different approach)

Another ten translation simultaneous search engine approach is not, in my judgment, so easyto use: In this one you must first enter the text desired and hit enter. The entire chapter in the KingJames Version will appear and not just the verse(s) you are interested in. Then there will be a seriesof colored blocks to the left. Hit the one with a V (for Versions) next to the one verse you areinterested in and 11 additional English translations will appear for that single verse:

    * http://www.blueletterbible.org/* By using http://www.blueletterbible.org/search.html#multiverse instead, however, one may select

any of the translations it has available and then type one or more of the texts one seeks and, byclicking retrieve all of them will appear in the desired translation.

There are various other sites that will permit a more limited simultaneous consulting of mul-tiple translations. Of these, the Unbound Bible (http://unbound.biola.edu/) will illustrate: it per-mits you to select four translations and to view the results from all of them simultaneously.

Downloadable Bible ProgramsA number of software programs are now available that permit one to draw together, simulta-

neously, a variety of Biblical translations, commentaries, and other reference materials. The follow-ing examples provide at least a bare-bones program for free as well as a number of free add-onssometimes a surprising abundance. Certain materials are sometimes available for varyingcharges as well, but these are recent translations still under copyright and for which permission touse without charge had not been gained.

    7

  • If you choose to DL one of these systems to make utilizing your translations and research toolsquicker and easier, use caution in evaluating which will provide you access to the widest variety ofmaterials of interest to you. Different individuals may find one specific system far easier to use thananother or to be superior in rapidity and ease of operation and access to the maximum number offree resources.

Some software is specifically designed to be used with a specific program. For example the e-Sword underlying application installation includes the KJV and a variety of basic helps. Dozensof additional translations and reference works are available at the site to be added to this core sys-tem. DL from: http://www.e-sword.net./downloads.html

Not to be confused with e-sword (above) is the Sword software system, downloadable at: http://www.crosswire.org/sword/software/index.jsp. It is particularly strong on study tools from nonEnglish languages.

Another interlocking research system is the Theophilus program. The most recent version is3.16 and is available at: http://www.theophilos.sk/download.htm (click downloads on left of screento go to the needed location).

In addition to having the KJV, Matthew Henry Commentary, and Eastons Bible Dictionaryavailable as part of the core program, it is essential in order to operate a number of study aids listedat the site. Of special interest is the Language plug-ins section which permits one to operateTheophilus 3.0 in 17different other languages. The files are listed at the site and are separatelydownloadable.

Yet another interlocking system dependent system is the BibleDatabase. This includes dic-tionary, commentaries, maps, and other research tools and may be operated in several languages, with wide selection of supporting study materials to run on it.

    * (Version 5 downloadable at:) http://bibleforums.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1503* (also available at:) http://bibledatabase.org/full.html

Davar is a system designed to facilitate the use of Hebrew language resources on your com-puter, but can also be used to open up to six nonHebrew translations and research aides from dozensavailable. Downloadable from: http://faithofgod.net/davar/download.htm in English, Czech, French,Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish forms. Davar includes the Online Bible (OBP in our text notes)and, in effect, uses it as a foundation for its Hebrew language centered interest.

Bible Explorer provides ten English translations as well as dozens of commentaries and refer-ence works that can be DL into its program either for a fee or for free: http://www.bible-explorer.com(click downloads at top of screen).

In the Beginning was the Word software system (version 2.0; 3.0 in beta also available)includes three translations (Darby, KJV, and WEB) and a Greek text with various other transla-tions that can be added. DL at: http://www.theword.gr/en/. It comes in multi-language systemswith a varying set of basic materials. (This is a totally different site than the in the beginningonline Bible translations one.)

The Bible Missionary software system can show four translations simultaneously as well asrelevant study/research materials and is designed to work in several different languages. Althoughit has a limited supply to Bibles and research material currently available, it is designed to permitwhatever material one wishes from other sources to be incorporated into the system. It can be down-loaded from: http://bibeltemplet.net/biblemissionary/.

Bible Seeker is another free software system that also has a very limited number of resourcescurrently available. The basic program contains the KJV, Eastons Bible Dictionary, and MatthewHenrys Concise Commentary. Six nonEnglish Bibles and two commentaries are currently available. Both the system and additional modules can be found at: http://www.lockettefamily.com/bibleseeker.htm.

These are simply some of the programs that are currently available. Others can be obtainedand as one comes across them, their relative merits and demerits (as compared with the above exam-ples) should be carefully considered.Although not an operating system itself, IntraVerse (available in KJV version for free and other

translations for a fee) is available at: http://www.instaverse.com/. If you point your cursor at any

  • PART TWO

    Non-English Bible Translations

The Bibles listed in this section are done based upon the data provided by the respective websites. Some leave the names of the translation totally in the dark; others provide fairly significantdifferent names for what is likely the same version. Hence you will find what are likely duplicatesof the same rendition, but we thought it wiser to identify them as given rather than risk combin-ing together what does not belong together. In some cases we have simply referred to the presenceof a version without any identification; in other cases we have labeled it as unidentified but theintent is the same.
