How did the series of military government after 1964 affect the economic growth in Brazil?

Even in Brazil, a country that has festive carnivals, and is going through

many changes, there was a time period when the military had complete control over the nation.

Brazil is a country located in the northern part of South America with a population of over 200 million people. Brazil has always been considered to be one of the most popular nations in South America, and it is highly depending on the agriculture. Brazil is around the world for its high sanitation level, and its festive carnivals held in the cities.

Brazil like all other Latin American countries had a time period in which it was a communist country. This communist, and military rule occurred right after coup against the government in 1964, which was led by the armed forces of Brazil. Until this coup, Brazil used to be a democratic nation, which was mainly controlled by the Coffee farmers because of their high influence to their nation. Through out the military rule, which lasted for over 20 years, we can see changes in the economy of Brazil.

How did the series of military government after 1964 affect the economic growth in Brazil?

The graph above shows two things, the growth in the GDP per capita, and

the democracy score. For this score for Democracy, the bigger the number is, the more democratic the country is, and on the other hand, the smaller the number is, the more communist the country is. The mark within the red circle represents the growth during the military rule. As it can be seen, when compared to the times when Brazil was democratic, the time span with the military control seemed to have had a bigger growth in the economy. This is most likely because once the country is under complete control of the military, strict restrictions are created, which decreases the amount of money wastefully spent. The person of the country loses some of their freedom to spend the money they want it, making it a lot more organized than it was before. The military decides upon where to spend the money on the most, therefore the pattern of countries with military control, is the fact that the economy shows a positive growth. As proof, this growth in economy can also be seen from other countries like Myanmar. Myanmar has been under military rule for over 40 years, and we can see the same pattern in the growth of GDP per capita.

How did the series of military government after 1964 affect the economic growth in Brazil?

As the graph indicates, though there are huge changes over the 40 years, it is clear how the country has a higher growth in the GDP per capita than it had in its democratic years.

Now one of the main reasons why the economic growth was bigger during the military rule was because of the way the military used the money on the work force. Until 1964, because the coffee farmers had most of the power in the country, almost all the money in terms of work force was used in the agricultural section. But after the military took charge of Brazil, we can see that more money was used in the industrial section and the service section of the work force.

These places where expenditures are made matter a lot, because there is trend on the way money is spent. In MEDC countries, we can see how most of the money in the country is working for service; on the other hand LEDC countries have most of its money spent on agriculture. Therefore, when we see changes in the amount of people working for the service in Brazil, we can start to understand why the country had a higher GDP growth when it was under the control of the military.

After seeing how the military rule had a positive affect on the economy of Brazil, it can be said that military government has an affect of bringing positive growth to a countries economy. This is true because, the country gets to control the way the money is spent, which results with less money being wasted for selfish goods. Looking at Brazil, this time span of the military government helped Brazil advance the work force, and it is one of the reasons why Brazil is thought to be a NIC country in the world today.
