Praying for the Dead

A vivid memory sticks out in my mind from my youth. Every time a parishioner died our Pastor made an an-nouncement after communion. He stated the person’s name, when he or she died, and then the date, time, and location of the funeral and burial. Then he said a prayer: “Eternal rest grant unto him/her, O Lord.” To my surprise everybody responded in unison, “And let perpetual light shine upon him/her.” Our Pastor continued, “May he/she rest in peace.” Everyone responded “Amen.” Then he concluded, “May her/his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.” Everybody conclud-ed, “Amen.” After hearing this over the years I eventually could chime in with the rest of the congregation. Typically, November marks the month to specifically remember the dead. The Church teaches us that praying for all the souls of the faithful departed is a spiritual work of mercy. One way we pray for the dead is through a commemorative list. The list helps us call to mind those who have died throughout the year so that we can continue to offer to God our prayers on their behalf. We have this list on the south wall of our church. Another way we pray for the dead is through the tradition of Mass Intentions. A Mass Intention is an offering of money for the Priest to remember and actively pray for one particular person who has died during the celebration of Mass. I keep this calendar on the table by the presider’s chair and have a specific mass intention nearly every day. Praying for the dead is part of our life as Catholics. Ask the Lord today to grant eternal rest to our loved ones today so that the Lord’s perpetual light might shine upon them.

Orando Por Los Difuntos Un recuerdo vívido sobresale en mi mente desde mi juventud. Cada vez que un feligrés moria, nuestro pastor hacia un anuncio después de la comunión. Indicaba el nombre de la persona, cuándo murió, y luego la fecha, hora y lugar del funeral y entierro. Luego decia una oración: "El descanso eterno le concede, oh Señor". Para mi sorpresa, todos respondieron al unísono: "Y dejen que la luz perpetua brille sobre él / ella". Nuestro Pastor continuó: "Que descanse en paz ". Todos respondieron" Amén ". Luego concluyó:" Que su alma y todas las almas de fe que han partido por la misericordia de Dios descansen en paz ". Todos concluyeron:" Amén ". Después de escuchar esto a lo largo de los años Eventualmente podría intervenir con el resto de la congregación. Por lo general, Noviembre marca el mes para recordar específicamente a los muertos. You are invited on November 24 to the St. Pius X Adapted Liturgy, a shorter, Mass that celebrates the lives and gifts of all people, including those with physical and developmental disabilities and illnesses. Every effort is made to accommodate the inclusion and participation of each person. This neurodiverse liturgy is an opportunity for anyone and everyone, a place for those with special needs, both seen and unseen, to cele-brate and participate in the Mass as they are able. The church is accessible for wheelchairs, and listening devices are available. The Adapted Liturgy is offered the 4th Sunday of nearly every month at 2:45 pm at St. Pius X, 1280 NW Saltzman Rd, Portland, OR; call 503-644-5264 for more information. This November 16-17, dioceses across the United States will take up the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. When you participate in this collection, you help groups of low-income people in your diocese and across the country in their efforts to provide access to affordable housing, health care, jobs, employee-owned business-es, and rights for immigrants. By supporting CCHD, you help your own neighbors, or have strong Catholic connections through local parish or vicari-ate involvement! Please be generous in this week’s special collection, which supports the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in six people live in poverty. Through this collection, you support programs that address the caus-es of poverty and provide a sustainable future for people across the country who struggle.
