•Before the Spanish first ventured into Central America from the colony of Spain (Mexico) in the early sixteenth century, the area that would become El Salvador was populated primarily by Indians of the Pipil tribe -- a subgroup of a nomadic people known as the Nahua, who had migrated into Central America about 3000 B.C.

The Pipil tribe were defeated in 1525 by Spanish, who settled in a place called San Salvador (capital of El Salvador)

Although primarily an agricultural people, the Pipil built a number of large urban centers, some of which developed into present-day cities, such as

• The Spanish tried to conquer the region several times and were defeated by the Pipils. However, Hernan Cortes led an army that entered El Salvador in mid sixteenth century.

•Under the Spanish Colonial Empire, El Salvador was part of the Kingdom of Guatemala -- which governed most of Central America -- as a province until 1700s

• The Spanish had come, in part, seeking for precious metals in the El Salvador (South America). But they found that El Salvador’s sole exploitable resource was land.

In 1821, El Salvador and the other Central American provinces declared their independence from Spain. When these provinces were joined with Mexico in early 1822, El Salvador resisted, insisting on autonomy for the Central American countries.

Route Toward independence

Guatemalan troops - sent to enforce the union - were driven out of El Salvador in June 1822. El Salvador, fearing incorporation into Mexico, petitioned the U.S. Government for statehood.

•After a revolution in Mexico, the mexican congress voted to allow the Central American provinces to decide their own fate.

•Hence El Salvador became independent under General ManuelJose in 1838.

•Initially El Salvador faced frequent revolutions by different factions, but it was not until 1900-30 that they achieved political stability.

Its economy was primarily based on growing Coffee. •The coffee business prospered or suffered depending on the fluctuation of the price of coffeeIn the world.
