Charitable Foundation in 2007 as a way to further its cause-related marketing efforts. At the same time

the CbC organization selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as a national charitable partner. This

relationship was a perfect fit as both organizations work to provide mentorship and guidance while striving to

reach new heights.

In addition to fundraising activities, the CbC organization encourages offices and professionals to increase

their involvement on the local level by participating as mentors, offering their professional services pro-bono

and assisting in any way they can.

Currently, there are many CbC professionals that are significantly involved with their local BBBS chapters,

including several who sit on their local BBBS Board of Directors.

The Climb For Kids’ Sake is the premier Coldwell Banker Commercial® annual fundraising effort. In 2007 Rick Davidson, president and COO, led a team of CBC® alpine mountain climbers on an expedition to scale two mountains in three days in the Pacifi c Northwest: Mount Adams in Washington followed by Mount Hood in Oregon.

The CBC climbers battled extreme weather throughout the expedition, including whiteout conditions while scaling Mount Adams. However, the team was able to persevere and successfully complete both missions. A special Climb For Kids’ Sake fl ag was unfurled when the team reached the summit of Mount Hood.

The goal was to generate at least $23,526 for Big

Brothers Big Sisters, the exact amount of money equal to the total altitude for both mountains (23,526 feet). the CBC organization exceeded its goal by approximately 50 percent, raising over $35,000! The Climb For Kids in 2008 raised an additional $25,000.

Two items will be offered for this promotion. Each will be featured on Merrill’s website, clearly labeled with a BBBS logo, so you know the proceeds are going towards the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

bowl for Kids’ sAKe

What is it?Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the leading fundraising activity for Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies nationwide. Held by over 400 BBBS agencies, Bowl for Kids’ Sake typically takes place between the months of January and March. It is one of the many ways to raise funds for the Big Brothers Big Sisters and it celebrates your efforts with a bowling party/tournament at the end of the campaign.

How do I get involved?1. Contact your local BBBS chapter to find out if they currently participate in a similar event. See the Reference section in the back of this booklet for a list of local BBBS offices.

2. Arrange for a representative to come in and talk to your office about specific details.

3. Determine if you would like to participate in the local BBBS bowl-a-thon or conduct your own Bowl For Kids’ Sake event.

4. If holding your own event, ask for previous flyers and pledge forms that you can use with your bowl-a-thon.

5. Discuss the best time for your employees and the bowling alley to host the event.

6. Contact the bowling alley to determine expenses and figure out how much money you need to raise in order to become profitable.

a. See if the alley will donate the use of their lanes for charity.

b. Find out when the alley is least busy and try and work out a discounted rate.

7. Consider door prizes to attract more participants.

How do I collect funds?1. Set a goal that each team or each member must raise before the event.

a. Donate a low amount but find friends who will match your donation.

2. Find sponsors, corporate or individual, who will donate a set amount for every pin you knock down.

3. Offer a prize to the highest earning team or individual as an incentive to raise more.

hostiNg AN AuCtioNWhat is it?

Having an auction is a great way to raise money for your local BBBS chapter. This can be a traditional auction in which the item presented goes to the highest bidder; or it can be a silent auction. Having both types is also a possibility to accommodate all the guests.

How do I get involved?

1. Contact your local BBBS chapter to find out if they currently participate in a similar event. a. Arrange for a representative to come in and talk to your office about specific details.

2. Establish basic rules for the auction to avoid future confusion, some things to consider are: a. Minimum bid prices. b. Whether or not one must be present to win the auction. c. When payment must be made by the winner.

3. Prepare a timeline to follow. a. If hosting outside of your office, reserve a location at least 4 months in advance. b. Begin soliciting donations at least 4 months in advance. c. Prepare flyers and send out e-mails at least 2 months prior to the event. d. Send out reminders 2-4 weeks prior to the event.

4. Establish a wish list of items and a price range for donations you hope to receive.

5. Plan the auction as part of another event to increase attendance. a. An end-of-the-year thank you lunch for clients. b. A market analysis presentation/discussion. c. A luncheon for brokers, friends and family.

How do I collect donations?

1. Talk to local vendors to see if they would donate or discounted items/services.

2. Have a connection to a celebrity? Ask if they would consider auctioning off a date or lunch with a fan. At the very least a signed picture or item will make a good donation.

3. Contact restaurants in the area for gift certificates.

4. Ask a sports memorabilia shop if they would donate or give items at cost. a. www.sportsgalleryweb.com/auctions.htm and www.signature-auction.com have more information on this topic.

5. Ask a friend with season tickets to a sporting event if they would donate tickets.

Once you have collected the items for the auction, you may want to consider putting them on display at your office or listing them in a new flyer or e-mail. Turnout for the auction will likely increase if there is a specific item attendees know they want to bid on beforehand.

gettiNg iNVolVedWe encourage all CbC® offices to arrange and participate in office and company team fundraising events. The following are just some of the benefits a CbC office can receive from organizing a team to participate in a Big Brothers Big Sisters event: • Team building promotes collaboration and is a great way to build team spirit and a sense of camaraderie among employees.

• Team participation in Big Brothers Big Sisters increases your visibility in the community. It sends a strong signal that you and your employees care about the youth in your community.

• Team building is a great way to build employee morale. It demonstrates that your company wants to play an important role in supporting worthy, charitable causes. Employees are proud to work for these types of companies.

• Team participation costs very little since funds are raised through individual donations gathered by team members from co-workers, families and friends.

• Team building often times enables a company to generate a far larger amount of money than would otherwise be possible through a direct corporate donation.

• Team participation is fun for employees!

• Of course the best reason to participate is the satisfaction you and your teammates will have from knowing that the dollars you raise will support the many programs provided by BBBS.

Helping to support Big Brothers Big Sisters is not only about donations and fundraising, but also partnering with local Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies. Your involvement can provide as much satisfaction as does the lasting impact on the children that benefit from the support.

Attending BBBS functions are a great way to network and meet potential new clients.

gettiNg stArtedThere are numerous ways for you to participate with Big Brothers Big Sisters. The first step is to determine what BBBS activity is most appropriate for you. Below is a brief list of some of the many BBBS programs that you can partake in.

a. Mentorship: Sign up to be a Big in a community- based program. It requires only a few hours a month for you to take a young boy or girl to a baseball game, to a movie, or shopping with your family — and to have a measurable impact on that child’s life.

b. Adopt-A-School: Join as a Big in the school-based program, and get your entire office involved. Meet with a child in a school or community center for one hour a week, where your friendship is proven to help him or her perform better in school, have a better attitude toward school, and increase self- confidence.

c. Professional Skills: BBBS can use your professional expertise. Consider joining the Board of Directors of your local BBBS agency or providing pro bono services to an agency, depending on need.

Your ACtioNs1. Contact your local bbbs agency a. Coldwell banker Commercial® makes it easy for you to get involved. In the back of this document and on the CbC® Blueprint intranet is a list of BBBS agencies across the United States. Simply locate your state and city/county and initiate a phone call.

b. A BBBS representative will be happy to assist and provide you with the details that you need to begin a relationship.

c. Visit BigBrothersBigSisters.org for additional information or to begin volunteering.

2. Additional opportunities a. Invite the local BBBS CEO to speak at an office meeting.

b. Include BBBS information at any regional events that your office may be hosting.

c. Customize the CbC BBBS brand advertisement (hosted on Blueprint) and run it in your local market publications.

d. Donate a percentage of each closed transaction to BBBS.

e. Link your website to the CbC/BBBS site.

3. track & Communicate

a. Create a paper trail of the time spent participating on BBBS-related activities and the donation dollars your raise.

b. Communicate your activities with the corporate office of CbC. To assist you with this effort CbC created a quick and easy template (available on Blueprint) to complete and return to the CbC company headquarters.

As a Big, you can deduct out-of-pocket expenses incurred on behalf

of your Little, such as admission costs and meals, on Schedule A of

the itemized 1040 income tax form. You cannot, however, deduct costs

related to yourself. Contact your tax advisor for exact details.

Basic Media Outlets: • Daily Newspapers: daily newspapers are typically the most commonly targeted outlets. They are usually fully staffed and are divided by sections (you need to know what section to contact — for BBBS stories, lifestyle or business is a good place to start).

• Weekly Newspapers: weekly newspapers have a much smaller staff and cover only local activities. However, because of their limited resources, they tend to be an easier target to place stories, as they will print a good deal of what you send.

• Broadcast (local TV and radio): broadcast media should be contacted if you’re hosting a local BBBS event. TV and radio is timely coverage — they are only interested in what’s happening today, not yesterday’s news.

Securing media coverage – How do I do it?Make sure you alert the local media about all your activities with BBBS. One of the most common terms used in media relations is called “pitching.” Pitching is the communication you have with a media outlet about your story. If it’s a story idea, you’re trying to persuade a media outlet to cover it; if it’s an event, you’re trying to secure media attendance. In essence, you are trying to get the media interested in your story.

There are different common forms of communicating to the press, including press releases, media alerts and photo captions.

_____ 17 _____

1) Press Release: A press release or a news release is considered one of the most essential media relations tools. A release is an announcement of your news item, written in journalistic style. Releases should be written so that if a media outlet desires, they can publish it without making significant changes. It includes a “to the point” headline, a summary of the facts of the story and possibly a quote from those involved. Releases should be no more than 2-3 pages.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the country. It has been the

leader in one-to-one youth services for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on

the lives of young people. The nationwide support for the organization, in both volunteers and donors, has never been stronger and the

number of children served nationwide has doubled in the last few years. Yet, the surge in volunteers has been disproportionately female

and more men are needed to help boys develop their self-confidence, stay in school and reach their potential. In 2006, Big Brothers Big

Sisters served 250,000 children, ages 6 through 18, in all 50 states. The BBBS website is BigBrothersBigSisters.org.

2) Media Alerts: Particularly if you’re hosting a local BBBS event, media alerts are an effective way of quickly spreading the word. Issue a media alert a few days before the event, either by email or fax. A good media alert is a one-page “call to action” document that presents just the facts – who, what, where, when and why. Don’t forget to include directions to your event (particularly useful for broadcast outlets).

3.) Photo Caption: If you’ve invited the media to an event and no one shows or if you have distributed a press release and it has not yet been picked up, don’t give up! In this digital age, you can still email the media a photo along with a short caption. A photo caption is a two to three sentence paragraph describing the specific elements of an attached picture. Include where the photo was taken, date, names of those featured in the photo and a brief description of the action.

PHOTO CAPTION: From June 29 through July 1, a team of CbC® alpine mountain climbers from affiliate offices across the country, organized by company president and COO Rick Davidson (third from right, standing), participated in the Climb For Kids’ Sake, scaling two mountains in three days in the Pacific Northwest. The event raised over $35,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentoring organization. The entire team is pictured here in their moment of triumph, unfurling a specially created event flag after summiting Mount Hood in Oregon.

Potential Story IdeasBig Brothers Big Sisters of America has powerful name recognition and the media typically loves to cover stories that involve well-known charitable organizations. Make sure you are informing them about all of your local BBBS work, including:

• Announcing your new local partnership with BBBS

• Fundraising events you are holding for BBBS (including results/dollar amount raised)

• An inspiring “feel-good” story about some of the work you’re office is conducting (e.g. one of our CbC® professionals has really had a positive impact on a child he’s mentoring through his involvement with BBBS).

Media Relations Checklist: Before you begin your BBBS media outreach, make sure you:

Create a media list: pull together a list of all the local media outlets and journalists you’re planning on contacting and research their contact info

Designate a spokesperson (typically the president of your local office)

Prepare a script of what you’re going to say: highlight the two or three main points you want to cover

Be aware of deadlines and lead times of each outlet you’re targeting (best time to contact print is late morning through early afternoon, broadcast producers are usually available early AM)

Know your outlets/what they are covering (e.g. “I’ve recently read your coverage of other local charitable work, thought you and your audience would be interested to hear what our CbC office is doing with Big Brothers Big Sisters...”)

Begin making calls/sending e-mails

• Get straight to the point quickly

• Consider giving an exclusive to a local outlet on your BBBS story, media outlets are a business just like anyone else and love to “scoop” their competition

• Follow up afterwards
