Manuel Martin obtained his first M.Sc. degree in Computer Sciences in 2008 and a second M.Sc. in Soft-computing and Intelligence Information Systems in 2011 both at the University of Granada, Spain. He is a member of the "Soft Computing and Intelligent Information Systems" (SCI2S) research group and the "Distributed Computational Intelligence and Time Series" research lab (DICITS). In 2007 he joined the Beam department of the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN). Currently, Manuel is part of the CERN openlab in charge of the data analytics team. His main activities in this position are focus on the research of new techniques and approaches for Big Data Analytics.

Big Data Analytics for Improving the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider Operations

The European Centre for Nuclear Research, CERN, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers for scientific research. At CERN physics and engineers work towards the discovery of the fundamental structure of the universe. CERN operates the Large Hadron Collider, LHC, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments.

Operating the LCH is extremely challenging and any operational incident or damage need to be avoided. Therefore, the control infrastructures have to be able to analyze what is currently happening and predict potential risks. This presentation will explain how the operations are being improved by mean of Big Data and Analytics and the future directions being investigated.

He has worked with the big data created by oil and gas operators, data acquisition crews, oilfield service companies, government regulatory agencies and mining operations on a global scale for over 30 years. His current responsibilities cover Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam business units for Mubadala Petroleum, which is based in Abu Dhabi.  

Emerging Applications of Big Data Analytics for Oil and Gas Operators

With multiple petabytes of technical data created by single projects, oil and gas operators understand the challenges of managing Big Data. But they are only recently leveraging the value that can be mined from these huge volumes. Some recent advances have focused on the role of predictive analytics in analyzing real time data streams from complex offshore operations. This allows scheduling of proactive preventative maintenance to avoid expensive downtime. With offshore rig rates of over USD$500,000 per day, the return on investment for identifying root causes of failure can be both impressive and timely.
